Bond 23 Title: Red Sky At Night?

Hi, new here guys, nice to find such a cool site. Im close friends with an art director in the film industry, i wont mention his name but he has worked closely with production designer Michael Carlin and is about to start work in Canada on Kal-El, the next Superman movie. He was busy in 2010 on Bond 23 before it went into hiatus. He told me that the movie for a while had the code name Red Shadow, but when official documentation and the script arrived it contained the title Red Sky At Night and as such was reffered to as this by Sam Mendes, Michael Carlin and the producers and the studio etc. I think its a pretty cool title myself though out of the two Red Shadow is better i think though Red Sky At Night has a classic Bond Movie ring to it. he also said that filming would have been done in Ontario, Canada and there was a large stunt involving the Ontario Tower as well as a huge hockey game and skiing/winter sports sequences. What do you guys think?

Wow. Very interesting news if true. I always like a wintersports Bond film. Plus the name Red Sky at Night sounds pretty cool too. But that could be just to throw off people.

On a side not we recently got a box with a standee in it at my cinema that said 'JB 3D' on the side. I got all excited about it, thinking maybe EoN had produced a generic teaser for Bond 23, even though I don't want Bond to be in 3D. Turns out it was for Justin Bieber 3D. :s

There's a large Pinewood Studios soundstage in Toronto which was used for Daniel Craig's last film (Dream House), so there is a link between EON and Toronto. As for the title, it is quite common for productions to use working titles which may or may not have anything to do with the eventual title - sometimes to throw people off the scent of the real title and sometimes because they haven't settled on a final title. Sometimes films get all the way through production and post-production and then have their title changed just prior to release. That said, Red Shadow is a plausible Bond title.

After DAD I think I had my fill of winter themed Bond movies. But it would be a nice departure from the endless desserts scenes of QOS. Just please not another ski chase. Been done way to much, lets try something new this time. Cool sounding titles though and the wait may kill me. God I long for the days of a Bond film guaranteed every 2 years. Being born in the early 80s I' too young to have been a fan in those days.

Cool news, what are the chances that its valid? The only thing I'm not too happy about is the hockey game but, you can't have everything you want these days.

By the time Bond 23 is ready to start filming, Justin Bieber will be old enough to play James Bond. Couldn't possibly be worse than what we have now.

"Red Sky At Night"? Let me guess...there'll be a Bond girl named 'Delight' somewhere in the story. Bond was a sailor, after all.

Not true. According to the MI6 website an old story from last year was printed in Variety about EON announcing that Bond 23 was on hold indefinately until the MGM situation was sorted out.
Variety sparks false 'Bond 23 delayed' headlines with year-old article

    Bond 23 - 05-01-11

If you have seen "Bond 23 Delayed Again" headlines around the internet today, don't worry, it's not true.

"Trade publication Variety thought they had a nice story on their hands today when they stumbled across a Total Film magazine interview with James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli discussing the MGM situation and how everything was on hold. Unfortunately, the interview was published in January 2010, not January 2011".

Give them a chance--remember, Tomorrow Never Lies became Tomorrow Never Dies, so who knows: we could have Dead Sky at Night before it's all over.

Red Sky At Night..... Wintersports Bond - if done right.... and knowing Craig, he'll take up snowboarding/skiing lessons to get it right, and NO awful blue screen 'Moore' version - I reckon they could do a great job :D

I was a fan of using Vancouver (my parents live near there....) having had the winter Olympics there last year - I reckon it could be interesting - and a hockey game (Ice hockey for us Brits :)) ) - cool - been to few of those myself - and I have to say, you can't help but be caught up in the atmosphere, and well, it's a pretty brutal sport ;)

To be honest, Dead Sky at Night GOT a certain ring to it. Yes, serious.

Would look good on ajb007 in a couple of years too:

After the desert in QOS and all that water in CR, some snow sounds about right for 23.

"Red sky at night" is a good title. Sometimes the sky is pretty red to the far north, and it sounds threathening without being a standard action title. Snowmobiles and extreme downhill skiing hasn't been used to full effect in any movie I know, so that could be great.

I would like the title better if the story was set in the cold war days and "red" referred to the dreaded communists. But, since those days are over (kind of) not sure I like it as much. I do like it better than Quantom of Silence though, no one knew what that meant.

I wish the producers would find a way to use "Shatterhand" as the title for Bond 23. I've always liked that title. It could be the name of the villain, or the code word for the villain's plot or for MI6's plan to foil the plot. Something like that.

...Shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning."

That's all that rings in my head, an old saying banded about in this part of the world.

Personally, I couldn't take that at all seriously as the title for an action adventure film.

I let it sit for a a few hours now and my mind keeps coming back to it. I like it.
Would probably run into copyright issues with Karl May and his heirs but the title makes... curious.

Now that you mention it, I remember a similar saying:

"Red Sky at night, sailors delight. Red Sky at morning, sailors take warning"

I think "red" in the title hints of blond and danger. Since Bond is ex-navy, he could use the old saying. Perhaps before leading a SBS/Royal Marines raid?

Glad you like my suggestion. I agree there are probably copyright issues standing in the way, but something about the one-word titles for Bond movies always resonates with me (Goldfinger, Thunderball, Goldeneye, Moonraker, Octopussy....well, maybe not Octopussy, but you get my drift!)

The traditional adage “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning” can predict the weather. Perhaps this aspect hints a plot that includes the manipulation of weather or global warming.

The Coca Cola Cat mentioned a Production Designer names Michael Carlin in his/her post. I've checked this info and a PD of this name exists, he worked for movies like In Bruges, Mr Bean's Holiday and The Eagle Of The Ninth. According to the IMDB there is no connection to Bond 23 or the new Superman movie.
On the other hand there is a cinematographer named Mike Carlin who worked for a few documentaries about DC Superheroes, including the man of steel.
Perhaps there was a misunderstanding or confusion.

My first thought was that the "Ontario Tower" (mentioned by Pepsi Cat, too) is the world-famous CN Tower in Toronto, but Google shows other results. There is an "Ontario Tower" in London's docklands area (in the UK, not Ontario!), part of luxury high-rise residential buildings, and there exists an "Ontario Tower" in Dubai, too.

    So many questions ...

Apparently no one is old enough to remember that depressing Fixx song with the same title played over and over again in the 80s and 90s. Personally, I think it's a terrible title and hope that it is not being seriously considered by anyone for a movie.

    I remember it well---still own the vinyl B-) ;%

I don't think it's a terrible title; just sort of trite and a bit blase...but ironically someone previously suggested, probably jokingly, Dead Sky At Night. As overused as the death element is in these titles, I actually prefer that one :))
