The ties that Bond

Hi all,

Following Matt Spaiser's fantastic blog post on the ties of James Bond, I felt inspired to share a few images from my tie collection.

Ties-That-Bond.jpg

There is a caveat that a couple of the ties are not screen accurate but in my opinion are very close.

Another caveat is that the ties featured are from the Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig era, and where possible I will add a link to stores if they still sell the ties.

So let's start with an overview of the collection:

0406.jpg

A little bit more detail...

0407.jpg
0408.jpg
0409.jpg

0411.jpg

Dr No and From Russia With Love

The navy blue grenadine tie is the first tie to focus on

0527.jpg
0529.jpg

Dr-No-103.jpg

Turnbull and Asser still sell a version of the navy blue grenadine tie:

http://turnbullandasser.co.uk/tie-9-5cm-na-plain-woven-grenadine-silk-1

The tie from a personal point of view is really nice, the texture is very nice and is a very versatile tie with a light blue or white shirt

Goldfinger

The black silk knitted tie

0522.jpg
0524.jpg

Goldfinger-642.jpg

Turnbull and Asser still sell a version of this tie although they have described it as being featured in From Russia With Love:

http://turnbullandasser.co.uk/tie-9-5cm-bk-plain-woven-knitted-silk-1

There is some question whether this was a dark navy tie or a black tie, that said this is a very nice and durable tie.

Tomorrow Never Dies

The Hamburg Tie

0517.jpg
0520.jpg

tnd4-cl-jkt-3.jpg

Turnbull and Asser still sell the screen accurate tie:

http://turnbullandasser.co.uk/tie-9-5cm-nabrbl-square-woven-jacquard-silk-1

I bought my tie a few years ago and the backing of the tie is in blue compared to the new version which is in brown, either way this is a brilliant tie and works well with a light blue shirt.

The World Is Not Enough

London PTS tie

0553.jpg

Turnbull and Asser still sell the screen accurate tie:

http://turnbullandasser.co.uk/tie-9-5cm-gytaor-intersecting-square-woven-jacquard-silk-1

I am going to be controversial here but I really like this tie, and have worn this a lot with a white shirt and dark charcoal suit

Die Another Day

London blue circle tie

Charcoal-Pinstripe-Suit-Grey-Tie.jpg

Turnbull and Asser still sell the screen accurate tie:

http://turnbullandasser.co.uk/tie-9-5cm-gynabl-circle-woven-jacquard-silk-1

This is a really luxurious tie and I have worn this with a white shirt and dark grey suit and it works really well

Casino Royale

Vesper Train Tie

0541.jpg
0542.jpg

Casino-Royale-0650.jpg

I was really fortunate to get this amended version of the screen accurate tie from MrPorter a few years ago - this colours are the same except this pattern is a smaller version of the original.

Quantum Of Solace

Blue PTS tie

0468.jpg
0470.jpg

Quantum-of-Solace-0025.jpg

This is a truly amazing tie and I wear this tie often with a white shirt and navy suit and the texture is very luxurious

Black London Tie

0489.jpg
0491.jpg

Quantum-of-Solace-0271.jpg

This tie is not the screen accurate tie, but it is a close version of it. I picked this version of the tie from Selfridges before Christmas, I have worn this tie to an evening party with a very dark charcoal suit and it works very well.

Bolivia Brown tie

0472.jpg
0474.jpg

Quantum-of-Solace-1074.jpg

This was a very hard tie to obtain, but equally a very very nice tie - the flash in the pictures take away the brown gold colours of this amazing tie

Greene Party Blue tie

0476.jpg
0477.jpg

Quantum-of-Solace-1218.jpg

I was fortunate to pick this tie from Harrods and it is a very smart tie, compared to texture this is a lot smoother than the other QoS ties but has a lovely feel to it.

0480.jpg
0482.jpg

Quantum-of-Solace-2103.jpg

I got this tie from a great AJB member and it is a fantastic tie, the details highlighted in the tie are not picked up on film, but this is a fantastic tie.

In my opinion QoS had the best designed ties in the whole franchise.

Skyfall

PTS Istanbul Grey tie

0535.jpg
0538.jpg

Skyfall-0073.jpg

The pattern of this tie is really nice and I have a light grey suit and this works really well.

National Gallery tri colour tie

0545.jpg
0546.jpg

Skyfall-0324.jpg

I really like this tie, I have worn this with a white shirt and navy blue suit and the blue grey design give it a nice look.

Black Shanghai tie

0493.jpg
0495.jpg

Skyfall-0347.jpg

COS had this in stock up until a few years ago, as a black tie I do wear this with a white shirt and dark grey suit.

Granborough Tie

Now I have two versions which I will highlight both:

Version 1
0496.jpg
0499.jpg

Version 2
0514.jpg
0515.jpg

Skyfall-0965.jpg

I personally prefer version 1 not only because the pattern is a little bit more defined, but it works well with either a navy or charcoal suit

M's Office Grey tie

0501.jpg
0502.jpg

Skyfall-1884.jpg

This tie was never officially confirmed, from the film it was a basket weave design with light and dark grey.

Spectre

Mexico City PTS blue tie

0508.jpg
0510.jpg

spectre-james-bond-mexico-city-daniel-craig-cr-courtesy.jpg

Some of the Spectre ties are still available from Tom Ford, the basic pattern makes this versatile and from all of the Spectre ties this is the one I wear the most.

London Grey tie

0451.jpg
0452.jpg

i57r75.jpg

This tie is still possibly obtainable from Tom Ford.

Q Lab Blue/Purple tie

0447.jpg
0450.jpg

Spectre-New-James-Bond-trailer-presses-forward-while-glancing-back-LA-Times-2015-07-22-15-16-43.png

This can be described as blue/purple or mauve, it certainly has that hue when under direct light

Rome Black tie

0505.jpg
0507.jpg

0d4c13abde90039441a0d79aecb5e589.jpg

Being controversial again, but I really like this tie, I have worn this tie with a white shirt and charcoal suit and it works well.

Morocco Brown knitted tie

0459.jpg
0462.jpg

James-Bond-Spectre-Suit-510x600.jpg

From all the ties from Spectre this is my favourite in terms of colour, design and texture

Morocco Navy tie

0455.jpg
0457.jpg

Spectre-Trailer-Navy-Sharkskin-Suit.jpg

Black end sequence tie

0464.jpg
0465.jpg

Spectre-Anthracite-Damier-Check-Suit-3.jpg

Again this tie from Thomas Pink was available for a short period of time after the film, however it is now out of stock.

Apologies for the long post, hope you find this fascinating and useful

Beautiful collection of ties! I think the art gallery tie from skyfall is my favorite. If I could own just one from the recent films, it would be that one.

This has to be one of the best posts on the site!! Have you any links to any of the ties from Spectre? Been trying to get the grey one and the blue one when he meets Q. But can't seem to find them..

    What a fantastic collection!

Turnbull & Asser have a few dark blue grenadine colours, and on their website they even have the navy in a slim width, though still wider than Connery's:

    http://turnbullandasser.com/tie-8cm-na-plain-woven-grenadine-silk-1

I can't tell if that's the lighter or the dark of the navy grenadine ties that Connery wore in his Bond films. I've seen both in the shop, but it's hard to tell in their photos.

    Hi all,

Many thanks for your very appreciative comments, and I am glad to showcase some of the ties featured in the films.

The Skyfall and QoS ties were the hardest to find and involved lots of trawling through eBay and some very lucky finds at some of the boutiques. It is a shame that Tom Ford don't have a core collection of these ties for sale like Turnbull and Asser. I do own some of the Magnoli ties and they are equally great alternatives.

In terms of Spectre I know that the reissue project didn't get off the ground, however please find attached the swatch list with the tie codes:

    https://postimg.cc/image/fw8ctaman/

It is a case of getting in touch with the TF boutiques and just asking if they do have them in stock. Also there is the TF outlets in North America and Milan:

    http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlet/woodbury-common/stores/tom-ford

    https://www.themall.it/en/outlet-italy/the-brands/tom-ford.html?location=ford

Matt, many thanks for your great comments and thanks again for your reference guide on your brilliant website. I agree I have seen a variety of grenadine ties that T&A sell and it is difficult to determine form the photographs.

For those who have asked, yes I will use any excuse to wear one of the ties!

    You're welcome.

I did some more digging about the navy T&A grenadine that they sell now, and the tie on their website is the lighter navy grenadine that Connery wears with his blue suit to the office in From Russia with Love. It appears they may no longer be selling the darker navy grenadine that Connery wore throughout Dr. No and can be seen in most of Connery's other Bond films except Goldfinger.

Great collection! Love seeing these ties together and reading your personal thoughts on them. It's strange that besides the custom made SF ties I've never seen a proper skinny tie from TF. I find it strange because I would think he would capitalize on their immense popularity now and I would personally love to have a TF tie the same width as the SF ones.

TF has personally been greatly influenced by the styles of the 1970's, so it's part of his signature to have wide lapels, wide ties, bold colors, flared leg trousers, etc. If you saw his collection from Fall-Winter last season, you'd definitely see these influences. I honestly don't think you would have seen TF produce these slim ties if it weren't for the costume designer requesting it. The "QoS" ties were all 3 3/4" wide, and subsequent seasons saw his ties stretch to over 4". The current seasons are still around 3 1/4" wide. Those "SF" 2 3/4" ties are hard to come by in any fabric.

Great collection, 006!! Thanks for sharing! My collection has been tucked away in tie boxes, so it's great to see some of these getting good use!

    Kind regards,
    Craig

Yeah I saw a lot of that season in person last year and noted the highly 70's styles and bold colors. Cant imagine it being very successful but since its TF I guess it probably was.

...and that's what I like about Tom Ford (5th jacket button notwithstanding). Everything going slim doesn't look appealing to me and I hope that in the coming years wearing what fits you best becomes the norm again.
A personal favourite of mine is the Bolivia tie, I hope that I will find one in the future :# .

    006 -

I love this thread and the poster from Matt S. The pictures are great resource and appreciate the time and effort putting this together for folks. The links under each picture do not appear to be working. I take it that they were closer pics of the ties being discussed? This would be most helpful in identifying the ties or equivalent ties for purchase. I have quite a bit from Magnoli and eBay --- there are a few of the DC ties I'd like to get. If they cannot be posted, I'd be happy to get them emailed ---- will make it worth your while by sending some of my Bespoke JB pocket squares.
    THANKS!

    Good day fellow AJBers,

I recently received the latest set of ties from Tom Ford that were supplied for No Time To Die. There is a caveat that there is still some uncertainty which ties match which scene, and we won't find out until the film is released. I know that these have been featured in other posts, and the pictures I have taken were under flash photography, so colours may appear more vibrant then in real life.

    Tie no. 1

    1301.jpg
    1302.jpg

Product number: TF 7 JB55 XTA

First impressions is that this is very luxurious tie, the pattern subtle. Like all the ties featured you can easily wear this tie with a white or sky blue coloured shirt.

    Tie no. 2

    1303.jpg
    1304.jpg

Product number: TF 7 JB54 XTA

This is a muted brown wool silk tie with a subtle herringbone tie, with a hint of grey interwoven in the pattern. This has a lovely feel to this tie, it is almost like a cashmere silk, and I really like this tie. The pattern is subtle, and I think this can work very well with a light blue shirt, it will work well with a white shirt as well.

    Tie no. 3

    1305.jpg
    1306.jpg

Project number: TF 7 JB15 XTA

This is rich royal blue ottoman twill tie is very luxurious, it is very similar to the ties in design that featured in Spectre. Again the feel of this 100% silk tie is very nice, and will go well with blue and white coloured dress shirts.

    Tie no. 4

    1307.jpg
    1308.jpg

    BOND-Watermarked-Gallery002-1.jpg

Product number: TF 7 JB08 XTA

This is an amazingly, luxurious, and beautiful tie, out of all the collection this is my absolute favourite. I believe that this tie is the one that Bond wears with the prince of wales suit that Bond wears when he visits MI6. The tie has a great feel, and the colour is versatile to work with different coloured shirts and suits.

    Tie no. 5

    1309.jpg
    1310.jpg

Product number: TF 7 JB20 XTA

This tie is a lovely grey tie that would work well with a white shirt and dark grey suit. Again the feel is very lovely, and one that I intend to wear quite regularly. There is an unknown factor as to whether this tie features in the film, however, even if it doesn't it is a tie I intend to wear quite regularly.

    Tie no. 6

    1311.jpg
    1312.jpg

Product number: TF 7 JB21 XTA

A darker version of the previous tie, this is more charcoal / slat grey and it is a tie that works well with a white shirt and dark grey suit.

I have also included the only confirmed tie in the collection, this is the Alexander Olch Avery tie:

    1315.jpg
    1316.jpg

    https://www.olch.com/collections/the-avery/products/the-avery-necktie-4?variant=31129453527099

This tie is great, I wore this to a wedding recently with a blue shirt, and it fits really well. The colour in normal light may appear darker, but under light the burgundy colour comes alive. There is a similarity with the Turnbull and Asser Tomorrow Never Dies tie with the subtle light blue dots that make up the pattern.

Overall the tie collection from Tom Ford and Alexander Olch provide some really amazing ties, and all are versatile to work with a variety of shirts colours and suits.
