Closing Love Scenes

Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever are the only 3 Bond films which do not close with a love scene or an implied love scene, although Bond and Tiffany hug each other at the end of DAF.

Just something I thought of that's all :)

Thunderball sort of does, just they get interupted

Doesn't DAD too? I think thats how it ended.

My favorite is DAD...after the long epic thrilled the YOLT music with the Bond theme just is awesome. Bond still hasn't lost what it stands for after all of these years...

Well, you could say that the death of Tracy had romantic implications. Just before she was shot, they were clearly flirting with each other.

A wider issue here is whether what type of closing love scene people prefer. Do you like the understated romanticism of TLD & Doctor NO? Or do you prefer the 'hilarious' Bond-caught-with-woman situations of TWINE or Moonraker (preferably with vulgar one liner!).

Personally I opt for the former. My favourite end love scene is TLD which ended the film beautifully. My least favourites are the notorious Christmas gag scene & the end of AVTAK with Stacey Sutton in the shower with her Grandad (oh sorry that was Roger wasn't it). Before I cause a spate of angry pro-Roger posts can I just say I love Rog & all his films, I was just making a cheap joke!

I dislike the Peeping Tom endings where Q and M interrupt Bond en flagrante and then he quips and keeps on going. How romantic, not. At least in TWINE he didn't know he was being spied on but the end scene would have been much better without M and Q looking on. During the Moore years it became especially ridiculous that they were still 'shocked' when it happenned after doing it film after film and yet they still kept doing it. In AVTAK using the robot to peek was probably the nadir.

While on this subject, one thing I always found odd was M's shocked reaction("I thought he was with Dr. Jones." Then "007!") when the MI6 staff caught Bond and Christmas at the end of TWINE. Isn't this the same M who in the previous film specifically ordered Bond to contact his ex-girlfriend Paris Carver and "pump her for information?" For that matter, isn't this the same M who earlier in the same film reminded Bond in his mission to shadow Elektra that "shadows stay behind or in front, never on top." Therefore, why is she shocked?

Exactly! She's seen Dr Jones in her hot pants hasn't she? Whats does she think he's doing with her? Talking nuclear physics? :))

Haha MBE...true! I think when they made M a woman they added a pinch more disgust in reaction to his womanizing ways, but the male M was just as appalled it seemed to me.

I like the way Goldfinger ended, it wasn't so intrusive. They could have been rescued..yet thought..nah...

LOL! No angry post from me. I must agree that, of all the Bonds, Roger aged the worst (onscreen at least). Even Connery didn't look that ancient in NSNA!

GoldenEye really did not end with a romantic ending.

But I liked The World Is Not Enough's the best. I liked the last line, that was pretty funny. DADs was awsome too.

I also like the more understated romantic scenes. The second category you mentioned seem a little forced and cheap to me. It's a bit of a lame excuse for a laugh. Like everyone else has mentioned, M and Q and everyone else at MI6 knows of his womanizing habits, so why should they be so shocked in the first place? Even after so many movies with such an ending, you'd think they'd get used to it by now.

I think the Dalton movies at least ended with some dignity.

I like Octopussy and Die Another Day. Both end up in some romantic scene without silly gag's by Q.

I miss the "Oh James..." endings. With OP, AVTAK and TLD, they started a little tradition, and I always found them quite funny.

As for the "interruption" endings: these resulted in the "re-entry" gag in Moonraker, and therefore I won't hear a word said against them.

And I think that Thunderball is actually one of the most romantic endings of them all...

DN, FRWL, GF, TB. Those ended as they began. Intelligence and class.

However the other part of me quite enjoys the Keeping the British end up quips.

I'd prefer ending scenes such as OHMSS, TB, TLD & LTK. Dignified and classy, the way Bond should be. However, I'm not adverse to the comic gags of TSWLM & MR, but if I wanted comedy I'd rather watch Seinfeld.

I liked Thunderball's ending because he wasn't kissing Domino because..um...I got jealous when they kissed. At least you really never saw them make love...they just lost a lot of air bubbles in the water...

i think its at this point a signature of james bond to end with a love scene (or open with one). i mean would james bond really have been so successful if it werent for the bong girls, its it werent for his attraction powers?

Hopefully the ending is a logical conclusion to the adventure that precedes it. When things are reduced to formula - read "Oh James!" you are watching "piffle".

All time class ending FRWL!!! Runners up OHMSS and CR'06.

My favorite closing scene is from LTK. I think Lowell and Dalton had chemistry and found it very romantic when Bond jumps in the pool and pulls Pam in with him. The Patti LaBelle song really adds to the scene.

Fleming always had trouble ending his novels successfully, and i think the writers of the movies do too. The first 4 were fairly good and had a romantic edge, while YOLT ushers in the sort of nudge-nudge-wink-wink humour we see through to TSWLM where the comedy becomes much more obvious. TSWLM and MR have really good gags in them, but the Thatcher thing in FYEO was appalling and the endings of OP and AVTAK i found embarressing. TLD was a throwback to the early days, but for LTK, 007 jumping into a swimming pool??? I dont think so! The Brosnan era harks back to RM in a big way and all the endings weere appalling, with dumb jokes or implied sex taking place. I rather liked the bleak endings to OHMSS and CR - they certainly made a difference!

not too sure about them jumping in the pool, but you're right;the most romantic thing said in a bond movie...pam, when bond trys to kiss her "why don't you wait until you're asked?"
bond replies "so why don't you ask me?"and then that wonderful song.oh it gets me every time.no smut,no double entendres, sheer class.:x

I have to add my support to the classy endings devoid of "obvious sex". TLD & LTK had great romantic endings. It seemed that tradition would be carried on in the '90s but with TND they started the stupid puns and went to hell from there (TWINE was awful, DAD was vomit inducing).
This is gonna take crackerjack timing...

I think the film should end in its own way, according to what is best for the film. I thought the ending of Casino Royale was perfect in that it fit the arc of that particular story. I hope that for Quantum of Solace the filmmakers exercise the same care. No canned endings, please ...

Imagine if you had to update those Moore-style endings today, in the era of leaked sex tapes! Rather than being discreetly hidden under a white sheet, you'd get Moore's liver spotted face gurning while nakedly shagging Triple X from behind, or lying back while Holly lives up to her surname... :o Not very classy.

The way they had to give Brozzer these Roger Moore type endings was another cop out, preventing his films from standing on their own imo.

I think leave the romantic ending off QoS, certainly not the smutty 'i've got you now' punchline.
"This is where we leave you Mr Bond."
