Now their SS-Totenkopfverbände guards had fled the castle and the prisoners had taken control, but the castle was still in the battle zone and SS fanatics could return to massacre the prisoners. Major Josef Gangl commanded a Whermacht unit in the area. He had two iron cross medals, but near the end of the war he had helped the Austrian resistance. Gangl wanted to help the prisoners in the castle, but he ended up surrendering to the Americans first. He told teh Americans about the prominent prisoners in schloss Itter and the US troops and the German POW's decided to free the castle together! 14 US soldiers with two Sherman tanks (one had to stop and guard a bridge), a German Kubelwagen (their Jeep) and ten German soldiers in a truck fought their way past a Waffen-SS roadblock, drove over the drawbridge and entered the castle. This was the first time in WWII German and US forces fought side by side. That night the American and German soldiers sat at the tables in the mediaval castle and told war stories and discussed the future of Germany. The next morning 100-150 Waffen-SS soldiers attacked the Itter castle. The French POW's were ordered to hide in the bowls of the castle, but refused and joined the fight. This was the last time in WWII that US, German and French forces fought side by side in WWII and the only time in history US forces have defened a medieval castle. The Germans had RPGs and the Sherman tank was blown up. The defenders of the castle also ran out of ammunition. At one time former prime minister Reynaud is seen in one of the towers, right in the line of fire. Major Gangl was shot trying to help him. All seemed lost when Jean Botra, a French POW and champion tennis player, broke through SS lines and contacted US forces there. The American re-inforcements came at the nick of time and won over the SS forces. Why isn't this a movie? :007)
