Was gun availability and French society to blame for Paris?

    Hello Loeffs,
Paris was a terrorist attack. We are not sure for the moment if that's the case with the shooting from yesterday.

Problem is, that you won't see so many non-terrorist background shootings in other countries on such a regular basis - like it happens in the US

As for gun free zones: If entire USA would be a gun-free zone, there would not be so many shootings , just see other countries with strong regulations. Of course some nutters will manage to get access to firearms still but it does not happen so often.

Emphasizing that it happened in a gun free zone sounds a bit weird to me, it's a bit like accusing defenseless victims for a crime that happened to them.

This only occurred to me today watching the RAF Typhoons landing in
Syria. That modern fighter planes are all a dull grey, with only one little
    RAF sticker on it.

I hope this isn't a distasteful question, but I've been watching a few
WW2 Documentaries on Hitler. In one they mentioned the assassination
attempt. Which apparently was one of many planned but couldn't be carried
Out. Near the end Hitler became more paranoid and stayed in his own private
    Bunker complex.
Many have mentioned how Drax from Moonraker seems to be partly based
On Hitler ( in some of his mannerisms ) so I was wondering if Hitler had a
Particular body guard ? As I've never heard anything about it if he did.

SS-Begleitkommando des Führers ("SS Escort Command of the Führer"), later known as the Führerbegleitkommando (Escort Command of the Führer; FBK) were Hitler's bodyguards. They started out as eight men and ended up with a total of twelve. The last of them died in 2013. Rochus Misch was a veteran of Waffen-SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. This unit was origionally ment as Hitler's version of a royal guard or presidential guard unit, but functioned as an elite armoured division most of the time.

Thanks Number24 -{ , I only got to thinking about it watching the
Documentary on the assassination attempts, that he must have had
    a bodyguard or two.
With Fleming obviously using Hitler as a model for Hugo Drax, I
wondered if there was a model for some of the many henchmen, he
    used through his many books.

What I remember about Drax was his background in the Germen unit alle Brandenburgers. It was the German military inteligence (Abwehr) special forces unit. The soldiers had to know foreign languages and cultures , sometimes used disguises. They operated in many countries in Europe, but also countries like Egypt, Syria, Afghanistan and South Africa.

Keep an eye on developments in this story, and get back to me on that ;)

My only point, re: gun free zones is that they make everyone more vulnerable. California has some of the strictest gun laws in the USA. And the entire city of Chicago, where handguns are illegal, has some of the worst gun crime. Depriving law-abiding citizens of their personal freedom is not the answer.

One of the shooters was an American of Pakistani descent; his wife an immigrant from Saudi Arabia. He worked at this facility for the developmentally disabled. He left the Christmas party...and returned with his wife, both dressed in tactical assault gear, and began the massacre. Their home was a bomb factory. Neighbors have now said that they didn't report suspicious activity for fear of being accused of racism and/or racial profiling...so here, Political Correctness was fatal.

The larger issues are 1) Islamic radicalism, and 2) Immigration without assimilation...and this is a much bigger problem in Europe than it is here (although our president seems determined that we catch up). And need I add that Europe is one massive Gun Free Zone?

We don't need gun control. We need terrorist control.

I will not change any minds, and I'm convinced of my own view, so here we are again. I'll resume my radio silence on this thread now. Best wishes.

How many people have gotten killed by terrorists in the last 10 years in the US?
And how many have been killed by civil gunshot?

Terrorists are certainly a threat but it seems that the focus is there and the authorities do their best.

    And thanks for that!

We don't have these firearm attacks on a daily basis and we don't have to fear that the random guy on the street may fire a gun at you the next minute.

    Some food for thought:

TP, I'd never really considered before that Drax was based on Hitler but I suppose that there could well be something in that. Their aims in decimating London with a super Vengeance weapon were certainly the same. Drax's ADC Willy Krebs was named after the Wehrmacht General Hans Kreb (1898-1945). He ended the war in 1945 as Chief of the Army General Staff (OKH):

Whether they obey such laws or not, it's certainly easier for them to arm themselves in the US than it is in Europe. Providing easy access to firearms is a bit like waving a bottle in front of an alcoholic. If you can't get hold of a drink, it's more difficult to get drunk. If the bar doors are open wide, however...

Well yes, that would be my take on matters as well. Making guns easily available is the problem for the US, but it seems that it does not want to give up this particular constitutional right no matter how many senseless gun massacres there will continue to be. Such is the price of upholding this particular right...nothing will ever change until guns are more sensibly controlled but the social and political will is not there in sufficient force sadly. :#

To me it's clear the US pays a very heavy prize for their liberal gun laws. Each year they lose a lot of people to accidents, murders and massacres, much more than they have lost to terrorism at home. Do the European gun laws make it easier for terrorists? I've been thinking about this a lot since the Utøya attacks. Would the terrorist have been stopped sooner if something like tha that happened in the US? Possibly, but I believe it was mainly down to a police force with the wrong mentality. They saw readiness for terrorism mainly as having plans in folders just as the rules said they had to, because real terrorist attacks never happens here :#
I still want our strict gun laws. I'd rather run the risk of another terrorist running lose in a gun free envirorment than my country suffering hundreds of non-terrorist deaths by gun every year.

Excuse me sir, we have CONSERVATIVE gun laws. Conservatives want guns here, Liberals want a European model of this control.

    From Dictionary.com:

Liberal: of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism, especially the freedom of the individual and governmental guarantees of individual rights and liberties.

I know many Americans think of people who drink latte, drive Volvo, vote Democrat and spend their holidays in Europe when they hear the word 'liberal', but I think I used the correct terms.

On the Russell Howard show, he showed an advert from Norway, to teach
people about STD's. Which was a bloke dressed as a Penis. Sneaking up
on people and spraying them with glitter :)) very funny.
