Thank you for your replies. It is not the church but the place outside, I know there is a name for it but I can not remember what it is called, but I mean the monument. The poppies are put there. Afterwards I would also like to put a poppy on a wooden cross on this monument in memory of my countrymen who fought in WW2 for the British army but would only do this if it did not cause offense to any one.

And yes I would be turned out smart with my shoes polished and my suit pressed smartly like when I was myself in the army.
    That sounds lovely and fitting.

always shaken if I did put the poppy on the monument (I found the word and I mean the cenotaph). I would not salute because I would not be wearing a beret. In my army we would only salute if we were wearing a beret or other hat, it was regulations not to salute other wise. I would stand to attention and bow my head in respect.

Thankyou VesperMelograno for your kind words. England is not my country or my army so I am wary in case I upset any body.

Joshua of course you should go
unless specifically stated, Remembrance Day ceremonies are for the public
"lest we forget", like the name of the holiday says, the purpose is so the public specifically Remembers the sacrifices others have made to guarantee civilization and our standard of living, all the freedoms, all the benefits.
I think a lot of people take their standard of living for granted, as if civilization is our natural state. It is not. It is something our ancestors worked hard to achieve, and many fought and died to preserve it.

one thing that is extra sad about Remembrance Day ceremonies is every year it seems like fewer and fewer people attend, mostly senior citizens. Young people don't show up, don't care, have no appreciation for all the sacrifices their ancestors have made so that they may enjoy their comforts. Some silly friends my own age even think the ceremony is pro-war! it is not pro-war, it is remembering.

so Joshua you obviously care and know your history and appreciate the sacrifices people before you have made. You definitely should be there!

I am just about to start to listen to Live And Let Die audiobook. I did not know about these until some one on AJB told me. My plan is to listen to all the Ian Fleming books in order. I do not know how long this will take!

I have already listened to Casino Royale.

let us know what you think of Fleming's books Joshua
there's a "what are you reading" thread (https://www.ajb007.co.uk/topic/46064/what-are-you-currently-reading/) that is a good general thread for discussing the books, I'm sure listening to the audiobooks counts!

Speaking of the military. I inquired to get a copy of my grandfather's military records and they had burned so there are none now. It's kind of a weird feeling but in a way I'm glad because I have accidentally found out some things about him that no one in the family was supposed to know and that was after I put in the request. So I had this terrible feeling like I was intruding on his privacy. I'm kind of thinking if you'd wanted anyone to know he would have told us and so I feel super sleazy about the things that I have found out kind of by accident.

    caractacus potts. Thankyou, I will.

    The Domino Effect. Thankyou.

VesperMelograno. Don't be too upset about the secrets. I can't think of many soldiers who never did any thing wrong! When I was in the army a friend of mine got sentenced by court marshal and was put into detention barracks. He never told his family this as it was a great shame for him. They did find out though because he stopped getting paid while he was in DB and his wife had no money! I myself did a couple of things that nobody knows about even to this day!

Terror attack in NYC; 8 killed 12 injured.
A couple of blocks away from Casey Niestat's apartment, which is how I found out just now from his vlog.

On a less serious note...Dench had a non-permanent tattoo with HW initials on her ass.

Yesterday, 2 paramedics have been attacked by a car driver in Berlin.

They where re-animating a 1-year old boy and their ambulance blocked a parked car.
The owner came by, damaged the ambulance and threatened the paramedics to immediately remove the car.
When being told, that they are reanimating a boy - his reply was "I don't care, who is getting reanimated"

The called police took care of him....

Horrible mass shooting in Texas today. People came to church for hope and comfort, and then the killer walked in and killer or injured a large number of people. I don't know what to say.

Another "law-abiding" gun owner going rogue - sadly

    Sarcasm:
Of course (unlike with a terror attack where the Trump tweets 2 hours later how he wants to prevent this to happen again aside with other things) this is not the right time to discuss firearm ownership in the US.

And of course this has nothing to do with the large amount of firearms easily accessible there.

Just waiting to hear the pro-gun guys mentioning that we need more firearms when we go to church because someone with a firearm shot at the shooter....

The room where people hang up their coats before entering the main church is called "våpenhus" (literally "weapon house") in Norwegian. Weapons were never meant to be carried inside a church, so back in the day people had to leave them in the våpenhus. Just something I started thinking of.
  • ChriscoopChriscoop Belize Posts: 10,458MI6 Agent
This is another human tragedy and surely at some point there needs to be serious discussion about guns, unless the American people are just going to accept mass shootings as a way of life in the USA.
The problem is that OK you ban the sale of guns tomorrow, that still leaves millions and millions of guns in circulation, how do you get rid of those? Have an amnesty where people can hand them into the police? Will people in certain states simply refuse and hide their guns. Certainly any body intent on wrong doing would simply not comply. But surely there also needs to be discussion on why people commit these hideous deeds, is the society they live in so broken that mass murder becomes an option? It's complex and as with so many things these days it will take a brave person to unpick the fabric of society that allows this sort of thing to happen.

In a society that favours the few's greed over the masses' general well being it only follows that human life becomes cheap. :#
