Forgive me because I haven't joined the chat in sometime, but I thought this was Random Chat, not Random Facts. How are your midwinter breaks so far, if you have them?

I think it's cows, it's a farmyard animal most probably cows! They only have teeth in their lower jaw. And cows chew their food four seperate times!

The cows chew their food four times because they eat grass and their stomach cant digest it in one going. So since they have four stomachs, they upchuck it, then send it to the other ones until it is fully digested. There you have it, one night stand's random disgusting fact of the day. :))

And we have sunk to the level of talking about a cow's digestive system.

Anyway about the break tirpitz, we dont have one here, but we had last monday off and this coming one off. That is pretty nice, the closest break for me though is easter.

tirpitz, we're just exchanging random trivia facts for fun here :).

I think I randomly started posting up obscure trivia facts here awhile ago, but I forgot after awhile. Anyway, you might find it interesting that Dorothy's ruby red slippers (of the Wizard of Oz fame) ranged from size 5-6, width B to D. There were different shoes for the dancing sequences, walking around, closeups, etc. They were all specially hand-dyed so that the ruby red color would be preserved even under the really hot studio lights.

To get back to your topic, though, happily I have next week off entirely. (Un)Fortunately this means that I finally have to get around to do all of the music arrangements I've claimed that I'd get done for my Electric Penguins. We performed one of the marches from "the Nutcracker" this Monday at an all-school informal talent show which went pretty well, especially considering we had just learnt the piece the Thursday before :).

I just finished up with my school's robotics team's website for the FIRST Robotics Competition as the deadline was yesterday night. Our site looks tremendously nifty (I can say so without bragging because my friends ended up doing most of the PHP coding :) ). Please PM me if you're interested in looking at the site.

Well congrats on the project there Tracy, I always love website design (no, Im not weird :)) ). Also, the Electric Penguin name always makes me laugh. I didnt know that there were a lot of places that got a break around this time. I remember we used to get a to get three extra days off around this time when Easter was in April, but now it has been early. They would hatch on the extra days to the weekend so we would have a friday-tuesday break.

Speaking of which, does anyone know why Easter was changed from being in April to being in March? Is this a temporary thing, or was it permanently changed? I'm just wondering, since I always get turned aroudnd by it--I must be living in the 20th Century!! :))

I am not exactly sure why it has changed, but I remember it having something to do with the moon. I prefer Easter in April, but eventually it should change back over.
  • PendragonPendragon ColoradoPosts: 2,640MI6 Agent
I'm confused..when did it change? I just know when Easter is when I wake up to the smell of dye, ham and fresh lilies on the table....I never actually remember the date...

Easter can be on any day between 21 March and 25 April. That's 35 days and the two extremes are the rarest. It is celebrated like that since 325, Nicea. It does have a moon thingy: it is the first Sunday after the first full moon after 21 March. However, it is counted with the so called moon months, so it can happen that there are 3 day differences between the 'celebrated full moon' and the actual full moon. (Sorry if I got some terms wrong, I transleted this only from my Hungarian knowledge).

Barbie was named after the daughter of Mattel co-founder Ruth handler and her husband Elliot.I think the Barbara Millicent Roberts bit came from a fictional biography given to the doll.

That's about the same with our church services! The emergency services always manage to come past the church during a prayer, never a hymn... :(

Yes, but it is in fact just under 6 hours which means every so often a Leap year is skipped. HOWEVER! It is actually just over just under 6 hours, so some leap years which should be skipped aren't! For example, 2000 shouldn't have been a leap year, but it was!

Thanks to the "popular topics" feature on the side of the screen when you're writing a post, I came across a thread full of random trivia facts submitted by Alex and others: http://www.ajb007.co.uk/index.php?topic=17502

Anyway, my random facts of the day:

President Thomas Jefferson was once given a 1,235 pound hunk of cheese, giving us the term "the big cheese."

President William Howard Taft was the only president to get stuck in his bathtub at the White House.

President Theodore Roosevelt's mother and first wife died on the same day.

The most American presidential assassinations that succeeded within a fifty year span occured in the second half of the 19th century: Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley.

President Harry S. Truman's middle name literally stood for the letter "s."

When England's Prince of Wales came to visit the White House in 1860, so many guests came with him that President James Buchanan had to sleep in the halls!

President Abraham Lincoln is the American president most frequently portrayed in films.

Does this mean that someday in the extremely distant future we will end up with what happened sometime around the 14, 15 or 1600s? If anyone doesn't know what happened, the twenty-four hour day was somehow messed up with the calender, making it where a year was one or two minutes fast. Thus over time, altering the date (as in, it was actually May or June when they thought it was October!). They realized this because it was close to Spring or Summer, yet it was an Autumn month! The calender had to abruptly be changed, as in one day was October 15, the next being May 16 (can you imagine the confusion?). :s

Though I don't know the exact numbers and dates (as goes for most of my random facts), is it possible for this to happen again? I've heard that since that incident, astromomers came up with a system that insures accuracy in which a year is only .00016 something seconds fast. However, this combined with the leap year error. . . . Perhaps in the year 20000000000, we will be a few days off? :)
  • Jedi MasterJedi Master UKPosts: 1,093MI6 Agent
Well I think that we have such advanced science nowadays (hence being able to tell that a year is 365 days and just over just under 6 hours!) that it is highly unlikely! After all if you get out of sync you could always just add/remove a leap year some time...

They could solve this problem by launching a big stationary billboard into space, so everytime the Earth passes by it, it can remind us where we are.

"Congratulations! You have now completed one revolution around the Sun. Please reset your calendar, and proceed with caution."

i just think this is funny, it's the BOULDER COUNTY BOMB SQUAD's catch phrase:

"if you see something suspicious, don't touch it. CALL US! If you see us running, try and keep up"

    I'm dead serious
