My mate and I haven't stopped texting each other all night about this. :D I still have no bloody idea why we didn't just pick up a home phone - we were both at home. :))
New Earth wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but it was still good and a nice start to the series. It has left me hooked and wanting far far more. So I can't wait till next week. :)
And yes - I am quite glad he ditched the Scottish accent. I'm usually bad with accents - especially the Scottish ones - but I could definitely tell the difference from when I switched over to the beginning to Confidential on BBC3. :)
Next week does look far better, but I won't bad mouth New Earth - it was good. And although they didn't scare me at the time...not particularly anyway... I've just got this feeling I'm gonna have some nightmare or dream about those blummin' sick people. :)) :)) :))

The provisional viewing figures for the first episode in the new series of Doctor Who have been released, and it's good news. New Earth had an average of 8 million viewers (peaking at 8.3 million). This compares very favourably with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on ITV1 which averaged 5 million viewers.

As for New Earth. It was enjoyable enough, better than The Christmas Invasion, in my opinion. Still, there were times (just as in The Christmas Invasion) when I was feeling "been there done that". Next weeks episode though promises something new and different. Queen Victoria, the werewolf......I can't wait.

And Kung-Fu monks! Don't forget them!

Fantastically camp moment in one of the clips: Queen Vic holding a revolver (!) and saying "The correct term of address is 'Your Majesty'!" BLAM!! :D

Oh I've seen that clip! :D And I've played the new game at the site. It's not brilliant but it's alright. And right now, I'm just about to finish listening to the commentrary for episode 1. I downloaded it this morning and it's great. It's David Tennant, Russel T Davies and Phil Collinson. Really good. :)
But last night, I just had this weird dream about a werewolf chasing some guy in a kilt who had his kilt blown up and no boxers underneath. :o I wonder where I'd seen that before. ;)

I enjoyed the last series but that new episode was definitely a damp squib. Was that supposed to be a riff on Resident Evil? Why were the nuns cats? Was there any reason?
  • FelixLeiter ♀FelixLeiter ♀ Staffordshire or a pubPosts: 1,286MI6 Agent
Well, I think it's because humans have been going round colonising other planets for millions, even billions, of years by then, so when they met these other species... well, you know, ;). Now these Cat-people have emerged and decided to become the nuns here. Didn't they say something about it being their duty? Or was that just me? :s

Yep, another good episode. This had my son cowering behind the sofa ! Great CGI too - it's nice to see that they are still pulling out all the stops.

Was a bit hardcore for 7.15pm! Gruesome sound effects leaving little to the imagination of people being mauled!

Great performance from Pauline Collins too (as ever) as the stern Queen Victoria.

Wonderful way to sum the episode up. :D
    I thought it was great.
My mate was round and we watched it together. I noticed the Doctor's Scottish accent was gone after a while and mentioned it, just waiting to see when one of the characters would. :))
Next week's looks fantastic too. Not as impressive as this week's, but not that bad all the same. :)

Good stuff, although again a few signs of the series repeating itself with the Queen's turning on the Doctor at the end being not disimilar to Harriet's change of heart at the end of the Christmas show.
It looked lovely though- and I'd imagine the shot of the man changing into the wolf is the scariest in Dr Who ever!

K-9 and Sarah-Jane on Blue Peter this evening, by the way!

Well that bl00dy well rocked! I was worried about this episode, given Sarah Jane and K-9s reappearance, as well as the OTT looking monsters. However, it was just fantastic from start to finish.

The two plots didn't detract from each other at all. There was the realism of the Doctor's discarded companions and the krylitane's (sp?) plan of cracking the code for the universe.

Quite high on emotion this ep, with Rose's realisation that she's just the latest in a long line and will eventually be left by the wayside, and Sarah Jane's "waiting" for the Doctor, and her simple wish for a proper goodbye. (Side note, Elizabeth Sladen's looking good!)

Anthony Head's performance as Mr Finch was terrific, and the school staff were all very creepy. Eating pupils and staff members was a bit shocking, but added to the atmosphere.

And quite simply, K-9 still rocks!! Good dog! :D

Of the three so far, this has been my favourite.

    I really enjoyed tonight's episode.

The real focus of the episode was about an assistant's relationship with the Doctor. It was great to see Elizabeth Sladen back as Sarah Jane Smith (giving my age away a bit here), and she looks like she has hardly aged !
Again, there was some wonderful scenes with good dialogue - that made you laugh and brought a lump to the throat in equal measure.

I can't argue with Sarah Jane's comment that you "always need a Smith on board the TARDIS" ;)

It's so sad; I think whenever I watch the old Sarah Jane episodes I'll always think of this one and how bitter she was- it's almost like her life was ruined in a way. I think it might have even been best if K9 had stayed blown up so she could moved on from the Doctor a bit. But then, he is fantastic!
Sadly the Beeb have passed on a K9 spinoff (which would have rocked- imagine a K9 prop who moves like 'Brum'!) so we might end up with this rubbish cartoon with the updated K9 everyone's talking about. Shame.

I wish the Doctor had taken K9 with him. Or maybe he could buld another one to take with him. I really like K9 now. I'd only seen one of the old episode with him in, but now I really like him. :)
Oh and Sarah Jane was good too. :D

I wish the Doctor would visit some other planets. It's getting a bit boring being on Earth all the time.
  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent
Well he was on another planet just two weeks ago, but I know what you mean. There's an off world two-parter coming up, plus an alternate universe story coming even sooner.

Nah- more parallel Earth; think 'Inferno' or Sliders.

I like the sounds of that. :) I though Inferno was great! I'm hoping to get the DVD when it comes out. I think it's something like June DWM said. :) My birthday June and so I always have lots of money. :)

I think this series is getting better and better. Can I now say, I think David Tennant is a better Doctor than Eccelston? He has far more emotion, and is far more fun. Yes, Eccelston had his moments of humour and dancing etc, but this Doctor is far more "up for it" and far more likely to make a tit of himself. He's also, ultimately, more hyperactive.

The chemistry between Tennant and Sophia Myles was electric, it's no surprise that they've been a solid item ever since.

On watching Confidential too, I share the same fear as Sophia Myles - the blank eyes, no emotion, monster-under-the-bed, "clown" alike monsters give me the heeby jeebies.

Clockwork monsters though, and they did look beautiful under the empty mask; how original!

I have to agree with 99% of this - the only difference being that I still prefer Eccleston - just.

Another good, solid story - the writing just gets better and better.

I wouldn't mind answering a few questions like that either ;)

With only the minor criticisms I have of the "Werewolf" episode, this series is better than the last in many ways. Eccleston was great, but I think it can be said with a fair amount of confidence that so is Tennant.

Sophia Myles (a favourite of mine since she stole the Thinderbird movie as Lady Penelope) was stunning (in every way ;) ) and it was interesting to see Rose almost fade into the background. Rose will need a strong storyline next time ...

But with the Cybermen due to return next time ... wonderful!
  • HardyboyHardyboy Posts: 5,906Chief of Staff
Ooohhhh, how I envy you Brits! I've poked around the official BBC site and I like what I've seen of Tennant and the series, and I can't wait to see it. What's more, I love the Cybermen, and I'm green (or perhaps silver) with jealousy that you get to enjoy their villainy. Ah, well, at least we've got Eccleston now. . ."The Empty Child" aired last night, and it was a winner.
