But that's body horror versus psychological horror- zombies and Cybermen may seem superficially similar but because the BBC can't show people being torn apart the Cybermen scare you in their concept rather than their actions (although their actions can scare a litle too). Best of both worlds.

The Cybermen have helped me conquer my fear of dying. To know that if I were to live forever, I'd have to be turned into one of them... *shiver* I think I can be fine knowing my time will come one day; just like everyone else.
I really do like Maureen Lipman, so I'm rather biased when it comes to her appearance tonight. I do think it was rather inspired taking the clipped, proper BBC announcer of the 50s and turning her into a demonic bitch. Such a horrible laugh too.
I think I've said elsewhere that cadavers, faceless people, zombies and the like give me the shivers and having watched Poltergeist at an obscenely young age (about 5 or 6) I don't like the idea of televisions that can communicate with the room either.
Interestingly, on the Confidential show, they did say that until the 12 hour the Doctor had the line "I've got a fear of transmitters, I fell off one once" in reference to Tom Baker's demise.
Decent if fairly forgettable episode. Far from bad but the old picking a historical setting, picing an object notable for its prominence then and turning into a monster is feeling a little mechanical. Good fun, though and nice ending on the antenna- good whooshy coat action.
I do like this series but the black hole episode tonight was IMO very weak. Some terrible acting from the supporting cast and when we finally get an episode on another planet the old bunker/mineshaft setting is deployed.I've seen episodes of Red Dwarf that were more inventive with locations and sets than this. How many times has the Doctor lost the TARDIS now?

It didn't look good last week and wasn't really. I'm going to watch it again tonight on BBC3 though, because I really wasn't paying as much attention as usual last night - I was filling in my sticker album! )

Must have been watching a different episode to me! My heart was pumping at the end, although it did start a little slowly and the explaining-where-we-are scene was a little clunky. The acting was great, though; apart from that dreadful guy with the long hair. And the location work with the effects added was beautiful- that cavern at the end was stunning.

It wasn't just me then! I thought the scene with Toby possessed, eyes glowing, covered in that ancient writing, beckoning the girl to her death was quite a powerful scene for 7.30pm on BBC1... I did like the gritty, shabby, dirty "Alien" type set too I have to admit.
It is a two-parter so I'll watch next week to see what happens. The episode reminded me of so many other things.Doom,Ghosts Of Mars,Event Horizon,an episode of Babylon 5 spin-off Crusade, even a British horror film starring Judy Geeson that I can't remember the name of.I suppose it is now practically impossible to come up with a sci-fi story that doesn't evoke memories of something that went before.I do like Tennant though.I thought he really hit his stride in the werewolf episode and was excellent in the Sophia Myles one,the best of the series IMO.

Her death was terrifying wasn't it? She screamed fantastically- I could believe she was about to die!

I'm so glad I watched it again and paid attention. It seemed so much better the second time and I really liked the conversation:
Rose: You'd have to get a morgage!
Doctor: Oh no! This is it! I'm dying! I'm dying!
) ) )
Also, if anyone's interested, I've got a Doctor Who site. It's not that great at the moment but other people seem to like it and i'm quite proud of it and updating it every day. I think I'm addicted. Anyway: www.newearth.piczo.com
Actress Billie Piper is to leave Doctor Who at the end of the current series, the BBC has confirmed.
But the corporation refused to comment on reports that her character, Rose Tyler, would die in the final episode.
"It has been an amazing adventure and I can confirm it comes to an end, for now at least, as series two climaxes," the former pop star said.
Writer Russell T Davies said the Doctor Who team had created "a stunning exit" for Piper's character.
"The Doctor Who team have had a whole year to plan this final scene," he said.
"We will miss Billie and wish her all the success in the world for her future."
Piper, 23, is currently filming a BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman's Victorian thriller The Ruby in the Smoke.
"Rose and I have gone on the most incredible journey over the past two years," she said.
"I am truly indebted to Russell and to all the Doctor Who fans old and new who have been so supportive."
Speculation has been mounting over Rose's future on the programme, although the BBC had previously scotched reports predicting her departure.
The series two finale, entitled Doomsday, sees Rose and the Doctor, played by David Tennant, caught up in an invasion that threatens to destroy modern-day Earth.
Dave Bradley, editor of SFX Magazine, told the BBC News website there had been "a lot of rumours" regarding Piper's exit.
But he said that even if Rose did meet a sticky end, the door would still be open for her to return.
"No-one ever stays dead in science-fiction," he said.
Christopher Eccleston said the schedule on that show was very punishing, looks like it has finally caught up with Billie too.Overall I thought she was very good and handled the humour well.I could never quite decide if she was really attractive or a bit ordinary but that may have something to do with the person she used to be married to...:s
The episode on Saturday was much better than the previous week. Some good FX and a fast pace. They even stole from Alien/Aliens for the vent chase.
13 episodes a year is punishing? Your UK TV actors are so soft.
I can't say I'm sorry to see her go, quite the contrary. I find her character rather annoying and her voice just grating. But she was popular so that is a surprise. I wonder if the change in lead actors that lead to a change in chemistry between the Dr and Rose is part of what lead to her leaving.
Now, MBE, I really like Rose--although, like you, I haven't seen her with David Tennant, so I don't know what their chemistry is like. That said, I'm not too surprised to see her go--most Dr. Who companions average only a year or two, so it's about time.

I would say that her chemistry with Tennant is even more successful, the two gel together very well.
I personally can't understand your dislike for the character, MBE - I find Rose quite endearing.

At first I found her inoffensive enough but then there was the revolting soap opera stuff with Mickey. And her voice for me is like nails on a chalkboard.

Exactly. I've also really enjoyed Billie's role in Doctor Who, in fact it was a revelation (going back near the start of this thread shows the reaction of some when we heard "Billie Piper").
The ending for the series was filmed months ago, so this is obviously no surprise for the producers or the cast. In fact, the BBC worked to dismiss the rumour (but didn't deny it) months ago. It seems more like the ending of the series was about to be leaked.
Anyone think that the Beast (Satan, whatever it actually was) predicted it correctly? The Doctor only said "Well, he lied"...
That aside, apparently Billie's raking in the offers, so yes, a 9 month schedule is gruelling when there's so many other things to do.
About the 13 episode limit, I too, found this rather odd to be griping about a schedule but I remember the Fawlty Towers documentary I saw w/ Prunella Scales saying how American TV is so lucky because they get two weeks to rehearse for a taping whilst they only get one. I could see the tensions rising if that was the case!
It's a shame to see Billie go, as she was one of the most successful parts of the programme; in fact I think MBE is the first person I have ever heard criticise her!
The question is, how do they replace her? So much has been made during the series of Rose and the Doctor's relationship - it's a tough act to follow. Another teenage girl would seem to be copying her, but she has become such a strong figure of identification for many viewers (the 10 year old daughter of my work colleague loves her) that something radically different may alienate a section of the viewers. Bring back Sarah-Jane, that's what I say!
Billie's great, but Rose's character has been quite annoying this series- very selfish and clingy; although this hasn't been as bad in the last three episodes or so.
I can't imagine they'll kill her as she's the hero for all these kiddies, but I think we'll probably be left dangling until Christmas.
It said on teletext today that Michelle Ryan (best known as Zoe Slater on Eastenders) is being lined up to replace Billie. On looks alone Michelle is a great suggestion but according to the story I read she will have to convince them by way of an audition.
So, the trailer for the final installments then!!!
I notice the online version has been cut down from the version shown at the end of last night's episode. Three scenes that are most noticeably missing are the woman being exterminated in the street (that's right, exterminated. The sound was a Dalek's laser and she glowed green, skeleton visible), the British Army under heavy red laser fire on a bridge, and Rose's admission "This is the last story I'll ever tell". So there must be a Dalek in the mix somewhere, yet all we see are Cybermen. Intriguing!!
I notice you didn't mention the actual episode last night! Dull, wasn't it?
But the final two look great. And yes, a black Dalek has popped up at the Baftas and been seen at the Radio Times photoshoot with a Cyberman (in the BBC3 making of show), so the signs of a Dalek showing up are pretty good.

Oh man won't that rock! Saturday's episode wasn't that bad. It could have been better I suppose but I prefer it to Love and Monsters.
Well I don't care what anyone else thinks, that was fantastic. The atmosphere and build up was intense from the very beginning.
The Cybermen look even more visually stunning than they did before, if that's possible considering they haven't changed, and despite guessing what was going to come out of that sphere, the Daleks don't fail to impress.
The impending battle between the two cyborg races on Earth looks great too.
Two points:
- the "genesis dome" or whatever the Daleks referred to that pod as; last time the word "genesis" and the Daleks went together Davros was involved - could he be in there? Would that not explain the black Dalek?
- is it wrong to think Tracy-Ann Oberman was really sexy in that episode???
Don't think it ends next week either, I've heard that this series ends in a real cliff-hanger until Christmas, though I don't know how true that is.
An alien planet, two Doctors, Rose, Jackie, Mickey, Cybermen, Daleks, Peggy Mitchell (funny how no-one mentioned how Yvonne looks just like Den's wife!)... all brillant.
I'm not convinced we'll see Davros, but it should be a cracker.
Peggy Mitchell (funny how no-one mentioned how Yvonne looks just like Den's wife!)
Good point!! I don't watch Eastenders, so that didn't register at the time, but I do know she was the one who shot Den! In-joke that went over my head there, oops! Derek Acorah's brief "No one needs me anymore!" did make me giggle though.

I liked the line about 'No don't say 'no going back'! That's as bad as saying 'this is the best Christmas Walford's ever had'!'
