I completely agree with you here, RogueAgent. I've mostly caught the Saint during the BBC Friday Night Lineup, which also features Moore in his next cult TV series, the Persuaders! Roger Moore is absolute perfection as the clever charmer Simon Templar, what I'd consider to be a glossier, more mysterious solo-agent version of John Steed of the Avengers.
From what I've heard the Saint tends to be a TV series that you can easily rent from local public libraries, or so it seems to be the case where I am. Perhaps you could try looking there?

Well, the library is out of the question, since I live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula which is very sparsely populated. The local library is the size of a large apartment and doesn't rent videos, and the closest town with even a population over 10,000 is 100 miles away.
But I found my local cable company DOES carry BBC America, which I was actually surprised at. I was looking at BBC America's lineup, and they have lots of great shows. Monty Python, the Persuaders, the Avengers, Blackadder? If only they had Absolutely Fabulous, I would be in British TV heaven! So I'll sign up for a different cable plan that includes BBC America soon, and then I'll scope out "The Saint".
Thanks to everybody who mentioned how good "The Saint" is, as soon as I watch a few episodes I'll give my own opinion about it.
If you're brave enough to dare watch the WE channel, you can occasionally catch Ab Fab. Unfortunately it tends to run during the daytime, according to my mum.
I think BBC America broadcasted Ab Fab some time ago, but I don't know if they have within the last few months.

Well, I wasnt too busy last night at midnight, so I decided to watch the Saint. I had watched a little of The Avengers beforehand and I didnt seem to like it too much, but as I started watching The Saint, I loved it. I was a bit skeptical on whether I'd like it or not, but now I think I'm hooked. The episode was The Scales of Justice and it seemed to be perfect. The suspense was there, ooh, I cant wait to see another.

Were you watching the episode "Who's Who?" by chance? It's not my favorite episode plotwise as the actors playing the enemy operatives whose minds are swapped do a terrible job at imitating the mannerisms and style of speaking of the real Steed and Mrs. Peel. Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg, on the other hand, are absolutely delightful as Basil and Lola. It's a pretty bad starting episode as an introduction to the series; I'd recommend "The Correct Way to Kill" (easily my favorite color episode) if you want to know what the Avengers are all about . The Avengers tend to be much more focused on sci-fi high-tech and "Oh no, the Russians (always called the opposition, mind you) are out to wreck havoc!" sort of storylines while the Saint is more of a private eye sort of show.

The Saint is a great show. I have the whole color edisode collection (7 dvd sets) and I have already pre paid for the first black and white set which is available tommorow. I can't wait.

I just ordered the Simon Dutton series off E-bay. I've been waiting for this to come out for ages. I missed it first time around and it's reputation ain't great, but it's out on DVD in a land down under so I've imported a copy. Has to be better than the Kilmer "My name is Bruno" version.
Indeed the Dutton series is better than the Kilmer version, but there are a lot of problems with it. Simon Dutton is fine as Simon Templar, although some of the clothing he's given make him look more like a civil servant on his way home from his work. A lot of the stories don't make that much sense, with too much reliance on coincidence. And some of the people Templar is helping are prats. In fact in one episode he helps a man who has a child by a 12-year old Thai girl. I was genuinely astonished by this. Instead of helping the weak, he’s helping somebody who prays upon them. I know Templar is essentially a mercenary, but good grief.
According to Deadline/Hollywood, Adam Rayner is to play Simon Templar in a TV remake of The Saint. The pilot episode is slated to begin shooting later this month. The completed pilot is expected to be shopped to networks.

Could be interesting. It would have to be something excellent to attempt to rival my affection for Moore's Simon Templar though. I prefer Moore as the Saint than as Bond. Yet I don't see a remake being anything like the 60s series because it really is very much of its time - which is partly what I love about it. Moore's suits and perfectly groomed hair are the stars of the show for me ) There's an episode where he goes to prison and he still looks perfect! )

Not seen this guy before, not too bad but it's his voice I want to know: Templar always had a light, liltish voice you'd imagine, very English but classless. Personally I'd have thought Hugh Grant might have made a good Templar in a 20-year franchise starting from Four Weddings and set in the mid-30s going to the early 50s, like Indy. Dial down the poshness a bit so he's more like in About a Boy maybe, but he looks the part. In his day, Dirk Bogarde would have been the perfect fit.
