My ultimate feelings about Clive Owen not withstanding, I just do not believe he would ultimately be good for the franchise. He obviously considers himself a serious actor, and I truly feel that he thinks Bond is somehow beneath him. Maybe he is right, but Brosnan set a very solid precedent in how he represented the character off-screen, with advertising tie-ins, public appearances and his choice of alternate film roles. My gut says Owen just wouldn't do that, that he would consider the role something he does between "real" work, and attitude is something EON just would not accept. With a franchise character like Bond the actor is responsible for more than what goes on the screen, and that, more than anything els, is what Owen is lacking. I truly believe that by film two Owen will be whining that he's bored with the role and wants more "depth". And so in four years, we'll all be back here discussing the "new" Bond actor all over again. Giveit to Butler, who in many ways embodies many of the same qualities as Owen, but will also appreciate the role for what it is: a star maker.
Interesting points, royalmile and Canoe, and as always, Lady Rose, you say what I mean better than I can myself. What I find most interesting is that counting myself, the last five posters on this page have all had differing opinions on Clive, but (if I understand royalmile's avatar to be an indicator of his choice for Bond) all seem to have a preference for Butler to land the job. Is a consensus starting to form of a good compromise candidate?
Well, I confess, I am wearing my pick on my sleeve, as it were, these days!
Perhaps you're right, MarJil, Butler is more palatable to the majority. For me he's not a compromise though, he's a solid, excellent, wise choice.
Now, that leaves just one real problem:
Why is there a dearth of good sushi restaurants open at 1:45 am?

I quite agree.
Every time I see the guy, I think more & more, "Now there's a fella who DESERVES to be Bond!"
And I think we, the fans, deserve him and shouldn't have to make do with less.
Great links, Mist, thanks for posting them. I love Craig Ferguson. In that opening monologue sequence, he said what I have been trying to say and failed over the past year or however long I've been posting. That's what's been missing from Bond for years, and that's what I'm looking for in the next go around.
So what of the credibility of the rumours displayed on the mi6.co.uk website recently? Apparently we are to hold our breath as Clive Owen is set to be announced as the new Bond?

They got that from IESB.net which I don't know about their reliability or track record.

Actually the comment by insider Pierce-B that Clive Owen will be the next James Bond was stated here first.Credit where credit's due.:)
However, anything can happen and although there's apparently been plenty of momentum in Owen's direction we shouldn't speak with an absolute certainty yet.Only Michael W.Wilson and Barbara Broccoli--along with Eon's new partner Sony--knows/will know for sure who the 6th 007 is going to be.And they're not saying. For all we know,no contracts have been signed yet, so another actor could conceivably become the newest Bond. We'll all have to be patient a while longer...

I confess.
The Owen interview, I think, means what one wants it to mean. That really said nothing more than, "I'm not saying any more about it and I'll just repeat my previous answer". No more conclusive than Gerard butler's wink on the Ferguson show.
I'm just hoping it's translateable as, "I'm TOO busy for a while!" That's what I read from it.
Or maybe it's just a hopeful answer from a man who enjoys the rumours...

Got to hand it to Seannery to discredit anyone or any group, or entity that's inclined towards Owen Seanery, a 6-year old kid is being interviewed on TV, live, and is being asked who he thinks should be the next Bond. He just said Owen, so go down to the studio this very minute and engage him in a debate! )

Where is the little bugger.:)) Actually even if someone of Jackman's ilk was in this story I wouldn't believe it without more evidence.;) But hey who knows this could be it.

Though I've already set my hopes on Owen, in fairness I would be pleasantly surprised if Mike and Babs gives the public a good one-two and announce Jackman or even Brosnan.

Well it was certainly an interesting interview -and his response was the most relaxed I've seen from him when faced with that question. I really do believe we may have our Bond!
I have watched most if not all of Pierce-B's postings and in conjunction with the latest Casino Royale rumour, it would see that we may well indeed have our 'man for the job'. However....the fat lady hasn't sung yet...so anything is possible until then.
regardless of anything else, his "official line" has gone from "they havnt approached me" to "ill be kept busy." sounds like we have a new james bond to me.
So - what to do with the other interview from "Charlie Rose" last night?

I'm going to completely ignore yours Tim007 and just stick by the iesb one. Even though there probably is some truth in yours Tim007, the iesb one makes me feel happier.
Having seen the Charlie interview - i'm still sticking with the Sin City Red Carpet interview. Purely because that if he knew that he wasn't going to do Bond, he would have said - as he has done in the past. Whereas the IESB interview, he no longer gives the denial talk. No smoke without fire?
You know, the IESB interview really doesn't say anything either way. If you want him, you see that he's hiding something and if you don't want him as Bond, you see his standard non-denial. One thing about Clive, he plays it pretty cool; he's pretty cagey about the whole thing. A good trait for Bond, perhaps?

LOL yes that's why the news item stated the rumour was from IESB.

Seems to me he's bursting!
Exactly Mi6 states that it comes from iesb.net--sorry I didn't make that clearer.
It's got to be the best "yes but I can't tell you yet" of a Bond cast member ever.
If you work at Heathrow or Gatwick airport, keep an eye on the passenger lists...

I do hope it is him though!
His answers to the last couple of questions were cagey, regarding Bond.
I'm sure filming Bond will 'keep him busy for a while'
clive owen to be officially announced next week
Did MI6 actually say that? LOL... creative editing on your part.
You missed "according to rumours on IESB"...
