No box office records for Spider-Man 3 in the UK, but still a very impressive £11.8 million gross on opening weekend.

    Strong UK opening for Spider-Man

The symbiote attaching itself to Peter, thus making him more aggressive, is a terrible plot device.

Think about it, the meteorite simply lands by mere coincidence just a few hundred yards away from where he was, and the substance (who knows what it is, where it came from, and why?) attaches itself to him as he sleeps.

Perhaps if Peter had already become quite hostile and the symbiote simply harnessed that emotion, then our hero could truly have fought a 'battle within,' but we still would be left with an enemy that was not the result of anyone's misdoings or blind ambition, as we saw in the first two movies.

He does not overcome his own flaws; instead what we have here is just a black goo that turns Peter into a bad person, and so the mistakes he makes are not his own.

I know, 'it happened in the comics' but this really made the film inaccessible to me. That and all the other random coincidences everywhere.

The advantage that the symbiote had in the comics is that it was a story line that evolved over several years. Granted, the introduction of the symbiote could have been handled much better (while a Secret Wars adaptation would be cool, it simply wouldn't have fit). As far as I can surmise, the presence of the symbiote/Venom served only two purpose: 1) it allowed a darker element within the story's characters and 2) people just wanted to see Venom. Sandman couldn't carry a film by himself no matter how cool he is, and the Goblin story was more of a loose end than anything. The filmmakers needed an 'anchor' villian. They had a variety to choose from (my vote was for Rhino) and Venom better augmented the dramatic aspects of the story.

Not too long ago I was thumbing through the official "making-of" book, and one of the early sketches showed Sandman helping the Vulture escape from prison. Accordingly, Vulture was to be the third villain until the studio insisted on Venom.

After much procrastination and busy schedule, I finally went to see Spidey 3 with my son today.

    Well where should I begin?

    emo,emo,emo,emo,emo,fight!emo,emo,emo,emo,fight-wait, no..emo, emo,emo,emo,emo,emo,emo, fight that goes emo,emo,emo,bigfight,emo,emo and emo.

Clearly the worst of the three thus far and my son, the Marvel fanboy in the family, thought that it was unwatchable after the first thirty minutes and he was the one twisting my arm to take him.

I find it amazing that a film is titled SPIDER-MAN yet the character in question only has a total of perhaps 30 minutes in costume in a two and a half hour movie... 8-)

Hate to say it but Raimi mailed this one in. The only reason why I won't say that it's as bad as Superman Returns is because actual punches were thrown in this saving it from effeminate persecution...

I disagree with RA. I loved the movie. Thought some of it was hilarious, some of it was awesome, and for once I finally thought that Mary Jane was a good character.

Well you're right about the hilarious part, Night. I had to laugh to keep from crying. 8-) Apparently you had your tastes set for a comedy, I didn't...

This film is far from utter trash but it's a terribly poor attempt from the congested script to the CGI. For a second there I had to look at my ticket stub just to make sure it didn't say Moulin Rouge or The Producers because this wasn't much of a superhero film that I was looking at...
    Emo Peter sucks. :#

IMO, SM1 will always be the best of the three.

Agree about SM1, but I prefer this to SM2. Which was good, but, to me, even more cheesy and even less believable.

I couldn't believe how poor SM3 was. The sequence where Tobey Maguire turns into a badass disco king is one of the most toe-curlingly awful things I've ever seen.

Totally agree, J.D. Absolutely one of the worst comic book adaptations I've ever seen of a major character. Evil Superman from Supes 3 was more entertaining than Peter with his corny "combdown" and we all know how dreadful that film was...

Raimi should be ashamed of himself. 8-)

I was pretty neutral to Spiderman III; there were some real cringeworthy moments in it but I didn't think it was any worse than Peter's travails from the last movie: his scenes with Aunt May at the loan office, at MJ's engagement party, and the "Raindrops keep fallin' on my head" montage all had me gripping my seat and squinting at the screen thru one eye. Was part III really that different?

Also, is it my imagination or has the buzz around a fourth Spiderman movie died completely away? I know part three made plenty of cash, but the negative reaction by fans and critics alike seems have led a lot of people to dismiss the potential of future movies with the webslinger - kind of like Superman after part IV hit the theaters or Batman after Batman & Robin was thrust upon us.

:)) :)) :)) That was funny. Yes, Tony, it was atrocious! Much, much worse than the second which IMO, had much better pacing amid its goofiness.

Look my son begged me over & over about taking him to see this film and thirty minutes in he was completely restless. He wasn't like that in the previous two. He was actually considering us getting a refund and I should have. Believe me, I tried to find good things about this picture but other than some ok fight scenes, I came up with nothing. Now my kid knows how I felt last year around this time with a film I was really pumped up to see for over a year... :v

SM 4 should sit on the shelf awhile while the studio re-evaluates which direction to go because right now, a cliff is waiting dead ahead... 8-)

OK Boss, if you say III is that much worse than II, I'll just take your word for it.

Of course, this now begs the question: which did you hate more, Spiderman III or Superman Returns? Be honest now. :v

Without batting an eye: Superman Returns. My son and I caught it on Cinemax On Demand the other day and it's even WORSE.

Like I said before, SM3 was bad but at least Spidey actually punched someone and I can tolerate it alot more than Singer's drivel... :#

Maybe, but Ma Kent was much less annoying than Aunt May. I plopped the DVD in a few days ago; if you fast-forward thru all the slow / sappy / Lifetime moments, it does make for a punchy 35 minute mini-adventure. :p

Finally got around to watching Spiderman 3 tonight and I am glad I didn't pay to see it in the theatre. Easily the worse of the 3 spidey movies. I have established a new Barry's rule of super hero movies, if you have more than 2 bad guys, the movie will blow. In Spidey 3 we had Sandman, Venom and bad Goblin 2, not to be confused with good Goblin 2 and dark side Spidey who is kind of bad.

We also get a terrible jazz club scene where dark side Spidey does a dance number to Fever and some sort of Spidey homage to John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Even the final scene lacks any real tension as we cut to a television reporter giving us badly written on the scene reports. I am also amazed that Spiderman can bounce off building like a pinball off the flipper without having a mark on him after it is over. I also think Tobey Maguire is getting too old for the part.

No reason for Spidey 4 as far as I am concerned.

I am a huge fan of the first two, so I can not describe my disapointment with the third film. It is not only inferior to the first two, but it is absolutely awful. Spider-Man 3 is poorly written; like everyone says, there are too many subplots and characters which makes it unfocused. Scenes are thrown left, right, top, bottom, and center rather carelessly. None of the scenes fit smoothly together.

The most irritating thing is all the crying. Do we really want our superhero movies to be about crying? Certainly not! How can the guy who directed Evil Dead in which a woman is raped by a tree, grow into a soap opera director? I am not trying to say that trees raping women is anything great, but Raimi has grown terribly soft. Maybe he needs to direct a few episodes of General Hospital. It would have been more respectable if Raimi made Spider-Man vs. the Killer Tomatoes. Hey, that is not a bad idea.

What they need for Spider-Man 4 is to get a new cast and director. If not, than the series should not continue.

You will have no objections from me regarding a change of director, but I think that Tobey Maguire is fantastic as Spider-Man, and if there is a fourth Spider-Man film, I would very much hope that he continues as Spidey. :D

Personally, I'd want this franchise to be set on the shelf for awhile but...

Raimi on Possible Spider-Man 4 Successor
    Source: Wizard November 12, 2007

Will he or won't he? That's the question the fans are asking themselves about Sam Raimi directing the fourth movie in the Spidey franchise. Wizard recently chatted with Raimi about this:

Looking back, you've worked on Spider-Man in some way for nearly eight years. Has the excitement stayed with you?

RAIMI: I'm just as excited about the character, and so in that sense, yes. Although the physical energy level between how I felt before I started shooting versus what was left of me on the last day of photography, I was so exhausted at the end of "Spider-Man 3" I can't tell you. My love for the characters and my passion for the stories are the same, but I was just a shell of the person that I was after all of those movies.

If you had to take a break and pick a director to replace you on the franchise, is there anyone at the top of your list?

RAIMI: Because I love Spider-Man I would just say—I don't want to pick someone. I don't know if I’ll be directing the picture or not, but I'd like to say that it would be somebody that was the best gift I could give to Spider-Man—someone who understands him and loves him and could bring his passion and love to the character. A character director probably; no one else.

Spiderman 2 was on the other night and I tried to watch it. I was only able to put up with 28 seconds of Peter being humiliated at the pizza place before changing channells. I tuned in a bit later and could only stomach 16 seconds of Peter being humiliated by JJ Jameson before changing channels again. I tried one last time and was able to stay tuned for an entire 53 seconds while Peter drops all his books and gets lectured by Curt Connors for missing class before finally giving up for the night. Character development is one thing, but good grief the guy's a dish rag. This is one franchise where a little less adherence to the source material - at least when it comes to the Pathetic Parker - might be a good thing.
