Interesting list Jarvio.
And I love the notes for each film -{
Thanks.
I find it so much more interesting when people write comments with their list, rather than just the list. So I thought I'd contribute myself
I realise that my list is pretty unique. Many would think I was mad to put AVTAK at the top. But I need to just accept that it's my favourite bond film! Although having said that, my top 4 are very, very close.
Wow, some big surprises in my latest Bondathon. My thoughts on the films have stayed mostly the same throughout the years but there have been shocking changes to the list.
The Living Daylights remains my favourite film, and unexpectedly, OP jumped from 6th to 2nd. Both are full of tension and move at a quick pace with plenty of action and drama.
You Only Live Twice and Tomorrow Never Dies are the other big winners, the former from long term last place to 14th and TND up 6 places to 9th.
The Gilbert films have grown on me hence their higher places, whereas the Hamilton films continue to bore me for the most part even though they have some classic moments and characters - DAF ranks highest at 12th.
The losers are GE which I used to love and has now fallen to 6th, AVTAK has slipped over the years although I still enjoy it, TB which I thought I liked but the movie just drags, and this brings me to the most controversial placing of Skyfall at 20th. While it's technically very well made and acted, it bores me for the most part, my favourite aspect is the dialogue. I placed DAD above SF, shoot me
The untouchables. Spectre will have a hard time cracking the top 5. GE is on shaky ground
1. The Living Daylights (+3)
2. Octopussy (+4)
3. Casino Royale (-2)
4. From Russia With Love (-2)
5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (-2)
6. Goldeneye (-1)
Excellent, could easily rewatch
7. For Your Eyes Only (+2)
8. The Spy Who Loved Me (+4)
9. Tomorrow Never Dies (+6)
10. Moonraker (+12)
11. Dr No (+5)
12. Diamonds are Forever (+1)
13. Licence to Kill(-3)
Flawed but enjoyable
14. You Only Live Twice (+9)
15. A View To A Kill
16. Goldfinger
Mostly pacing issues (TB) or just downright bad (DAD)
17. The Man with the Golden Gun (+2)
18. Die Another Day (+2)
19. Thunderball (-11)
20. Skyfall (-13)
Didn't do much for me (unfortunate because LALD has many good scenes)
21. LALD (-5)
22. TWINE (-4)
23. QOS (-2)
Alright, here goes...I'll probably want to change this in the next 30 minutes. I will say that I can get in the mood to watch ANY of the Bond movies at any given time. Yes, I even occasionally want to watch DAD. )
1. Casino Royale
2. From Russia With Love
3. Goldfinger
4. GoldenEye
5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
6. Dr. No
7. Octopussy
8. The Spy Who Loved Me
9. Quantum of Solace (I don't care what people think, I think QOS is a damn good sequel to CR.)
10. The Living Daylights
11. Skyfall
12. For Your Eyes Only
13. The Man With The Golden Gun
14. You Only Live Twice
15. A View To A Kill

20. Moonraker
21. Live and Let Die
22. Thunderball
23. Die Another Day
I really enjoyed reading your list with the + and -. Last night I watched TND and now consider it a near flawless Bond film. :x
As a bigtime Roger Moore fan, I also appreciate the RM vibe of TND. It has the military helicopters and naval presence of TSWLM, the underwater shipwreck diving of FYEO, the Thailand islands and sailing rig of TMWTGG, and the joining forces with rival female agent of MR and TSWLM. Even the battle on the stealth boat could be seen as similar to the Liparus. And how cool is it to be patrolling Ha Long bay in a zodiac with night vision goggles looking for a stealth boat?!
My current 10 favorite:
1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK

Thank you. I debated placing TND higher (above TSWLM) but it's too generic to place it above TSWLM and MR which have many classic 007 moments. What I love about TND is Brosnan's performance, and the car chase is great too

With Bond, it doesn't matter if the movies are bad or good.
It's all about personal enjoyment.

I do too. It's not a bad film by any means, but I just don't enjoy it enough to watch it more regularly than DAD or TMWTGG... or many others. B-)
That was a shock. DAD is by far a worse quality product, but there's more I enjoy about DAD than SF. With SF, the high points are the lighting and camera angles, and the dialogue. I could put forward an argument that QoS has equal if not better camera angles...if only they lingered longer (eg. towards the end of the car chase, when the Aston and Alfa are side by side hitting each other).
Having said that, DAD also has more negatives than SF. But I would rather watch DAD than SF

I find it interesting that CR is the only Craig film in your Top 10, and even makes your Top 5, so you obviously love it.
Why do you love CR so much, and yet have the other Craig films so low? (not that I'm bothered by it, not being that big on Craig's 007 myself, but just being curious as to what CR has that the 2 other films lack for you)

It's a curious thing isn't it? I find Craig's performance in all his films to be excellent and the general production quality/acting to be among the best in the franchise (yes even QoS. The editing is crap for Bond but would work in a film that necessitates it.)
QoS is low for the same old reasons. There's not much cinematic Bond in it. The people who like it do because they say it's close to the literary Bond character. But replace Bond with another character and you won't even realise it's a Bond film, apart from the lazy references (eg Fields in oil).
Skyfall....skyfall...hmm, I feel it's a bit like my relationship with Thunderball. There's many great moments and one-liners but as a whole it doesn't add up. It's lacking something, there's not much happening in the movie and perhaps that's down to the budget cuts. The score is generic. Craig is great in it, and plays it like Connery does in Thunderball...like he's having a good time.
CR, on the other hand, has a lot of attention to detail, and style. The way he walks after he gets off the seaplane, the dinner suit scene, someone recently made me aware that he eats caviar in the dinner scene with Vesper at the end. His demeanour throughout the film feels right. Campbell gets the pacing and action right, and brings out the best out of all the cast, much like in Goldeneye. The YKMN bits of the score are brilliant. Despite the formula shake up I still feel like I'm watching a James Bond movie.
This time around, Spectre is mostly a return to form with all the familiar elements back, including a henchman finally. Looks like there will be plenty of action but without neglecting character. The only unknowns is whether the score will be Bondian (not hopeful) and I don't want another personal plot (which we'll be getting) - but neither will spoil the enjoyment if everything else is spectre-cular
I haven't seen your list here, what's your ranking?
I don't yet have a full ranking of the EON 007 films, but for the Craig Era it's currently SF > QoS > CR.

Personally for me, neither of them are James Bond. Pierce Brosnan in my opinion was always over-confident, and lacked any sort of Bond like essence. This is just me but all of his movies were rubbish and forgettable, except of course for Goldeneye, which was great.
Again, Daniel Craig didn't feel like Bond either, except for Skyfall which I loved. He really proved himself and I am looking forward to Spectre. Loved Connery in his first three movies (and maybe TB as well), loved Moore in all of his movies and loved Dalton on both of his films.
We're inevitably affected, at least to some degree, by the Bond we grew up with.
Mine was Brosnan, at least he's the one I first remember seeing.

I grew up with Connery and, to a much lesser extent, Moore in the Brosnan era. To my friends, Brosnan was either the best, or second best after Connery. To me he was fourth, only better than Lazenby. Now I think Lazenby might even better better as Bond, though I still prefer Brosnan in many other roles.

No I am only 24, not biased at all heh Tomorrow Never Dies was the first Bond I saw and I didn't like it then as much as I hate it now. The Bonds I love are DN, FRWL, GF, OHMSS, TSWLM, FYEO, AVTAK, TLD and LTK
I guess one's Bond taste is a result of both which Bond one saw first and what personal inclinations one may possess, which isn't something that I know much about.
TND was the first Bond film I saw in theatres, but I think it was when I first watched GE later on that I truly got into Bond. I just fell in love with Brosnan's portrayal.

Unfortunately not. SiCo said he would add it to the site as a proper feature, but that was years ago now.

I guess Moore, Dalton and Sir Sean are your fave 007s, while you're not too big on Broz or Craig. I'm curious regarding your issues with the latter 2.

Again, Daniel Craig didn't feel like Bond either, except for Skyfall which I loved. He really proved himself and I am looking forward to Spectre. Loved Connery in his first three movies (and maybe TB as well), loved Moore in all of his movies and loved Dalton on both of his films.
1. Dalton 2. Moore 3. Connery 4. Lazenby 5. Craig 6. Brosnan

1. Dalton 2. Moore 3. Connery 4. Lazenby 5. Craig 6. Brosnan
TND was the first Bond film I saw in theatres, but I think it was when I first watched GE later on that I truly got into Bond. I just fell in love with Brosnan's portrayal.
