Warners proudly leaked a photos of that wonderfully hideous Catwoman suit early, and as much as people thought it was a mock up or a joke, it alas wasn't.
MBE
How true.It wasn't enough that Warners insisted on hiring a neophyte screenwriter for Catwoman. It wasn't warning enough that she and Warners proudly proclaimed that this Catwoman would be an entirely original character bearing no relation to the famous creation of Bill Finger and Bob Kane--but it'd trade on the established name.
We weren't warned enough even when IGN's Stax got hold of a copy of the atrocious Catwoman screenplay and described it in all of it's depessing detail. And even when Sharon Stone gleefully talked about how much she and Halle Berry camped it up during the filming of Catwoman,we weren't sufficiently warned that this movie would be dead on arrival.No--then there was the picture of Berry in the repulsive costume to seal the deal.
And DC Comics wonders why Marvel's films are often superior to their own.Maybe if DC Comics exercised a little more creative control on the films featuring their extensive library of characters--like Marvel has been doing(they won't work with filmmakers who won't respect their creations enough to present relatively faithful dramatic adaptations)--there might not be fiascoes like Catwoman.
I'm hoping Superman Returns is an entertaining movie and not something the cast and crew made in order to simply take the money and run...

Therein lies the rub--DC is owned by Warner Communications, which, of course, owns Warner Bros. studios. It would be hard for DC to demand creative control when the gang that controls its purse strings is also making the film. Superman Returns may not be a "take the money and run" sort of deal, but we can expect Warners to exploit the hell out of it, as they're continually doing with those beloved Looney Tunes characters. Expect gratuitous plugs in the film for the WB network, Time magazine, and AOL (and reciprocal advertising in those media); yet another new cartoon show; and Lord knows what else. Ahhhh, smells like synergy!

That said,I honestly do hope this Superman movie turns out to be a good one. It's just that Warners almost always manages to shoot itself in the foot whenever these types of movies are made by them. And as a DC fan,I'm sick and tired of seeing that.
It really doesn't require a an extraordinary effort to make a really respectful to it's source comic book movie. And I'm talking about more than just getting the characters' names straight.
Not too impressed by the trailer. It doesn't scream "Superman!" to me, and it's not intriguing enough to make me want to see more. And I still don't like the idea of Brando being dragged up from the dead to continue as Jor-El...
Was that really Brando's voice on the trailer, or just a clever imitation? At first, I thought it was, but towards the end I began to have some doubts.
Definitely Brando; the speech is, if memory serves me right, one of the things played to Kal-El as he travels through space...
My objection is this, principally; Brando didn't want to be involved with Superman II, even though he had already done all the work, and where he was replaced by Susannah York. Why should we assume (now that he has shifted off the mortal coil) that he would want to appear in Superman Returns?

Actually, I'd heard that Brando wanted too much money to appear in Superman II, so the producers dropped him. I'm sure Brando works much cheaper these days!
I'm surprised no ones mentioned the well... big problem with Superman right now. Aren't ehy having problems with editing as a certain part of Rouths anatomy is too large for a family movie?

I know everyone is looking forward to this picture, but I have to say I personally don't care if they ever make another Superman. For some reason the character never resonatated for me. I am more of a Batman, kind of guy. Hope the pictures is done well for all you Superman fans.

This will clearly be one of the blockbusters of 2006 along with Pirates 2 & (regrettably) MI:3.
I highly doubt that Singer will muck up something as iconic as Supes. Ratner on the other hand with X-3 has yet to show he can fill the void left by the Bry-man...

I'm primarily a Batman geek myself, but Superman has always been close to my heart. I'm more curious about whether or not any of the 'Smallville' continuity will spill over onto the big screen, especially given the fact that the series will end approximately one month before the movie premieres...and Smallville has taken great pains to reference the film version any number of ways...

Yeah, Loeff, like you and Barry I too am partial to Batman. But it's nearly been a 20 year drought with this character on the big screen... And for a comic geek such as myself, his return is somewhat overdue.

From what I've read, SR is more of a loose sequel to the first two Christopher Reeve films. There will even be some direct links to those movies such as using some of Marlon Brando's unused Jor-El footage, a photo of Glen Ford as Clark's father and the look of the Fortress of Solitude. As such, I don't think Smallville will have any direct bearing on the movie.
Personally, I'm really stoked about SR; I like Routh, I like the look of the film from the stills I've seen, I really enjoyed the teaser, and Director Brian Singer is an absolute Superman geek (I mean that in a good way). I'm really expecting big things from SR.

Routh and Bale look compatible enough in a Gen-X kind of way, just in case they decide to make a "World's Finest" team-up.
On the Smallville series, didn' they also have a scene featuring the Fortress of Solitude set from the movies? I missed that episode, but the previews looked like they were definately tying the series with the films.

The fortress of solitude depicted in Smallville is IDENTICAL to the one in the feature films. I think it would be very cool if they did tie the two enterprises together, but it would be difficult---particularly if they're showing Glenn Ford's picture. Brando's stuff isn't as much as a hurdle, IMO, as Jor-El has merely been a disembodied voice in Smallville, despite his many machinations...
It WOULD raise some interesting questions about the relationship between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, who would be estranged former friends if Smallville has any bearing whatsoever on the new film. Probably won't happen, and more's the pity.
Then we come, full circle, to the central problem that everybody who knew Clark in Smallville (sans eyeglasses) would immediately realize that he is Superman. Perhaps Kal-El has the ability to 'cloud' people's minds...
Anyway, that's how I'd probably write it.

The original Superman the movie was perfect and can never be bettered, same with Batman, batman Begins did little for me, though it was better than the 2 big loads before it.
Again, Blade I strongly agree with you. The original Superman has to be the best comic translation to film ever IMO. It has yet to be properly rivaled...
There's nothing to do that's new in this film, it will just be a slightly below par copy of the original...I might rent it in the future sometime but I don;t know if I can be bothered doing the whole cinema thing to see another re-hash of a classic film.
Like you tell us about Craig & CR...we'll have to wait and see...;)

Brandon Routh presented one of the awards at the Golden Globes (with Teri Hatcher, no less). I must say, he looked like he was channeling the spirit of Christopher Reeve; his mannerisms and even his voice were just so evocative of Reeve it was a little eerie.
The 1978 Superman is one of my favorite movies and is, in my opinion, the best comic book adaptation ever put to film. Still, it has been almost 30 years since that movie came out and I'm looking forward to another worthy big screen adventure for the Man of Steel. I think Bryan Singer has just the right mix of talent and respect for the material to pull it off.

And consider the strides which special effects artists have made since the late great Christopher Reeve donned the 'S'...
Bryan Singer has proven that he has the chops to deliver top-notch superhero films, and affords these larger-than-life characters the respect necessary to make the outlandish come alive on the big screen.
I have a very good feeling about SR.

This teaser gives me goosebumps every time I see it. Or maybe I'm too much of a comic fan to contain my excitement for this film.
