Lazenby's Rolex Cosmograph

I just watched OHMSS, and I loved the look of that watch (Rolex Cosmograph). I've been searching and searching just to find the model of it, with no luck. Could someone help me figure out what it is, perhaps the price, and where to get it? Unfortunately, there is no current model that is all silver, the closest is the Gold and Silver Cosmograph Daytona, which is extremely nice, but still not the same thing. Help?

It is also a possibility that what I am looking for is a chronograph. Either way, it is whatever he wore during the scene where he climbs onto the cable car rope. Any help would be appreciated.

I am no expert but I believe Lazenby wore two Rolex, a submarina with oyster bracelet and a cosmograph.I believe the cosmograph was his own.

It would have been similar to this....

tn_U239.jpgThe current model of the Daytona is available in stainless steele and is a VERY popular choice.Dscn4349.jpgIn the UK its rrp is £3670 but the chances of getting one at retail are very slim with lengthy waiting lists at authorised dealers.Away from authorised dealers they fetch anything between £5500 to £6000. I have never really paid much attention to Lazenbys watches so I hope this is what you are looking for.

There were indeed two Rolex's worn by Lazenby in OHMSS. The first was a 5513 Submariner similar to the one Moore wore in LALD. The 5513's have an acrylic crystal and the dial indeces are not outlined in raised gold like modern Submariners. The Submariner was a private purchase by Lazenby that was used as a prop to help him secure the role of Bond. The second was a 6238 Chronograph bought by the prop department, a percursor to the modern day Cosmograph. These 1960's vintage Rolex Chronographs are quite rare, particularly with the silver dial and silver sub dials. The pushers on the early Rolex Chronographs are also simpler. They can be found but the prices are astronomical.

Here is an interesting link about the Lazenby Rolex Chronograph:

As an aside, I purchased a Connery style Submariner (5510) a few months back. The bezel insert is the one with the extra graduations between the 0 and 15 and is not accurate to the one Connery wore. I should be getting the propper bezel insert this week and I'll post pictures when I get it. The Connery Bond Submariners are thick cased and have a big crown that says brevet with no crown guard. They are either the 6200, 6538, or 5510.

I quite like that white Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, the newer model. Why isn't this one on the website? Have they stopped making them? Either way, they are a hell of a lot of money, and, even though I like them better than the Submariner, I think the Sub is a better choice for the price. Oh well. I'll just hvae to see.

I'm sure a white dialed Cosmograph can be sourced. However, the Daytona Cosmographs are some of the most expesive of the lot. Quite frankly, Fleming never says what exact kind of Rolex Bond wore, so you could probably get by with just about any model Rolex. But I think one of the Rolex "tool" watches would be the most fitting. My first Rolex was a GMT Master II that I bought because of the Bond connection, but also because I was a Merchant Marine Officer at the time, and keeping two time zones including GMT, Z, or UTC time, as it is variously called, was important. It also looks very much like a Submariner. In fact Peter Sellers wears the early incarnation of the GMT Master in Casino Royale.

If you want the Bond movie watches, that is a different story. If you are like me and want a copy of all the incarnations of the watches that Bond wears through all the movies, than you have your work cut out for you. But that is what collecting is all about.

I eventually want all of Bond's watches... but I don't have enough money or time for that right now. I have just recently wanted a Rolex to wear other than my Seamaster, and I saw OHMSS, and wanted something similar to Lazenby's non-Submariner.

Oh, DG, on a side note, since we are talking Lazenby, are you still planning on making his holster?
  • Donald GrantDonald Grant U.S.A.Posts: 2,251Quartermasters
    Nightshooter,

Yes I still plan on making the Lazenby holster, however, I have not had the time lately to devote to it. Likewise, the person who puts the holsters together for me has also been busy. Thanks for your continued interest. I'll post when I start the project.

Don't you think that the purpose of the watch in OHMSS was a little stupid? Bond used it to time something that didn't have a schedule: it only moved when people went on the cable car. Why would Bond time the intervals?

Though I'd have to go back and rewatch the sequence to be certain, I don't believe he was timing the intervals but rather the length of the overall cycle, including embarking and disembarking. I also seem to recall that for whatever reason the trams had to return to the base station regardless. That is, whether there were passengers or not, the cars could not remain at Piz Gloria.

Bondcollectibles.de has "The orginal Rolex Stainless Steel Chronograph Wristwatch worn by George Lazenby in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE" on sale for $50,363 Euro ($50,797 US).
Unfortunately, it's just a tad over-expensive for me.
