James Bond Tag Soup

What have you done now? I hear most of you shouting!

It's an experiment. It's still in testing.

The rest of you . . . What are you on about?

http://www.ajb007.co.uk/tagsoup/ (or on the home page at the bottom).

Ok, ok but what is it?

Put simply it currently reads the news from ajb, CBN and Bond Movies twice a day. Upon doing this it checks the content for keywords.

Then it displays the main keywords on the home page, with the largest being the most important (i.e. the one found the most) etc etc.

Hmmm, it looks ok but...

It is simply an interesting (I think) way to bring the news to you. If you like the look of a keyword just click it and see what you get.

Once you click a keyword you can then navigate the news via keywords as each article lists it's keywords as links. See where you end up!!

I love it

Good because it took a while to make, and it will still be perfected over time.

I know of a Bond RSS Feed, will you add it?

Get in touch and I will consider it yes, the more there are the better the keywords.

It sounded as though it was self updating! Perhaps Si is going to be replaced by a huge super computer called Deep-Thought

It is 100% automatic, which means it's excellent for me! I hope it proves useful or at least a little gimmicky.

At the moment the keywords will be quite similiar on a daily basis as there is only limited news.

Forgive me, but what happens to the new posts then?
  • SiCoSiCo EnglandPosts: 1,371M
New Topics is now situated just to the right. The same content just compressed slightly.

I'm guessing then that "James Bond" is always going to be the largest in the soup? Just a suggestion, but maybe the different size font is not necessary since we already know that James Bond is going to be a popular topic on the sites. I personally tend to be more interested in the little arcane topics that are creeping in the mix, which have a greater chance of being overlooked if they're smaller.

I don't see why 'wow' is included in the mix for instance. And EON and EON Productions are essentially the same.

P.S. It seems that the recent topics is not working now. There have been new threads that weren't added to i.

Yes you are right, which is why I am considering removing it from the list. But I want to see how it runs and updates first.

The Cat. Recent Topics has undergone a couple of changes in order to speed up the site. These changes will be reduced soon. Currently it is only updated every hour. But I will reduce this.

The Recent Topics was / is a giant bottle neck on the main page. It is the slowest part of the page so it needs sorting. In the short term this is the best option.

Clicking More Recent Topics, does still do a live search on the database.

The keywords are pulled out of the articles. There is no user intervention which is what gives it a bit of a random feel.

The keywords on the front page have been individually pulled from the news articles. There for EON and EON Productions are used extensively enough in the articles to be classed as main keywords.

What you see is only a handful of keywords (the top few). The database actually contains around 200 for each pass.

Depending on the frequency of news updates in a day / week the words should change reasonably fast.

    Hey Si!

I think the tag soup is out of control. It gets bigger and bigger, almost distarctingly huge and contains many words with no intrest whatsover. There should be some more filters or I don't know what, because now it contains too many redundant expressions.
  • SiCoSiCo EnglandPosts: 1,371M
Yer it's an evolving thing so for the moment things are just as they are. I will sort it all out in time. But it's still kind of the idea to get irrelevant words that lead on to more interesting things.

It's still in Beta and under going testing.

Noooo you have unearthed the raw computing menace that is involved in ajb.

Don't mention it to anyone the TAG will get you...

Also you have to understand that as I am interested in web development; it is stupid not to test these things out on my own site! Plus some of you may even like the web things I fiddle with every now and then. :D

I think the idea is rather intriguing but the size of the font is a complete eyesore. Everytime I scroll too quickly and see it my first reaction is that there's a font glitch in my browser. It's far to big and overwhelms the content on the rest of the page.

I have to agree, I did always think the font was rather large. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was that Firefox (obviously--what else would I use? ;) ) had a setting accidentally changed that messed up the font. But after resetting it to "Normal," it showed the same thing.

So, perhaps the largest font should be brought down a size or two. Perhaps it could be made not much larger than the standard font size (it appears to be Size 10), while the currently larger ones could be made into bold, and the really small ones could be made to be really small. ;)

Or . . . Perhaps instead of it being on the home page itself, there should be a link to it on another page. That might make things look more uniform--then, since it has a page to itself, it can be made as large as you like! Size 1000 would be interesting. . . . :))

Looking at the tag soup I'd say you need to take either "James" and "Bond" out, or "James Bond", as it is silly to have them all in there! I don't know if they are actually any use though as I don't really use it!

Yep it looks like that might be the right thing to do as they have kind of taken over. Which is to be expected.

But as it can be potentially different every six hours it's hard to tell what to keep and what to remove.

"Board member" always seems to be in the soup, so I think it would be safe to remove that one.

It seems to me that the ones that are unnecessary are the ones previously mentioned, along with these. . . .

"Man" (a bit too generalized, I would say ;) )[/*]

"Casino" (I don't really think both "Casino" and "Casino Royale" are required ;) )[/*]

"Rogue" (comes from "Goldeneye Rogue Agent," no doubt)[/*]
I would say that those and the other more generalized ones (i.e. ones like "Message Board" and "Film") seem to be pretty much unrelated to Bond, and are kind of unneeded as a result. However, this is just from looking at the homepage as it is. It might be different in the next few hours, but the from what I've seen, these ones seem to be up there quite frequently. But there again, I'm not sure. . . . What do you think? :)

Are the tags generated from meta keywords, which might explain the redundancy? I'm curious as to whether or not the various news articles are found with different keyword search word combinations so that they're more easily found in a web search?
Flattery will get you nowhere, but don't stop trying.

No the keywords are generated by Yahoo. Every article is scanned by a Yahoo service which analyses the document and returns keywords. As the data is from RSS they don't have Meta keywords.

I was looking at the tag soup just now, and on my IE browser it became distractingly huge. Also, there are many ters ("Funny" "Marvel" ""Lord Of The Rings" "Star Wars") that don't really have much to do with Bond. Can't these terms be excluded somehow? Though as it seems from the description, the process is automatic so there's not much to do there...
  • SiCoSiCo EnglandPosts: 1,371M
It is mainly to do with the inclusion of the Sideshow Feed which is not turning out to be what I want. I need to play with it and get the right feed.

I can exclude words but the dictionary would become huge!

Whoa! What's up with the Tag Soup? It's all over the place? It's as if it's listing every word on the site.
