Star Trek 2.0

Is anyone else enjoying Star Trek 2.0? I love the original Star Trek, and on G4TV, Star Trek 2.0 is AWESOME! The Spock Market is really inventive and so much fun! I think everyone should check it out, especially if you love ST: TOS like I do.

What is this Star Trek 2.0? I'm a bit of Star Trek enthusiast, but dropped away early on during the "Enterprise" series and haven't really looked back.
  • NightshooterNightshooter In bed with SolitairePosts: 2,917MI6 Agent
Star Trek 2.0 is basically Star Trek The Original Series reruns, but it is interactive in that there is an online chat, a "Spock Market" based on what is happening in the episode, trivia, and a count of things like how many times Kirk's shirt is ripped and how many times Uhura has undie shots throughout the series. The coolest thing to me is the Spock Market. It is a fantastic idea. It is on G4, and for EST it is on at 11:00 PM everyday.

My question is Star Trek related. When I read the thread title I thought this was about a rumored Star Trek movie due out in 2008. Does anybody know about this? Supposedly it has a young Kirk and Spock.

It was just announced in variety; as of right now, it will be produced and directed by JJ Abrams (of Alias and MI:3 fame) and will in fact focus on Kirk and Spock's early days at the Starfleet Academy and their first mission into space.

Former Trek producer Harve Bennet (ST II - V) tried to get a similar concept greenlighted in the mid 90's and was refused.

Since Enterprise is already the Star Trek "reboot," would Kirk and Spock at Star Fleet Academy be a re-reboot?

    I think the term is re-hash. :(

Truthfully, doesn't anybody have any original ideas anymore? Is this the best Hollywod can do? Dredging up old characters that were already beautifully realized and trying to make them more "hip"?

Enterprise already tried the prequel bit and it failed miserably. Yes it was poorly written, but all the continuity errors it introduced got the Trekkies up in arms until they were calling for the producers heads. And the look of the show was all wrong; it took place 100 years before Kirk and Spock but all the hardware looked more advanced and modern. This new prequel will run into the same problems and I'm sure the Trekkies will rip it to shreds as well.

Digging up an old topic, but an epiphany came to me the other night. No solid casting announcements have been made regarding JJ Abram's pending Trek movie, but there was talk by Nimoy himself about appearing as an aged Spock.

Anyway, I feel I have come upon the best solution for someone to play Captain Kirk - Michael Weatherly (currently starring in NCIS)

    ncisp6.jpg

He may not be Academy 'young' but he has a boyish quality about him that IMO reflects Kirk's budding boisterousness. Anyway, I think he's a far better choice than Matt Damon. Since he's already proven himself in CBS/Paramount's top ten show NCIS, I think they should feel pretty confident about giving him the chair (captain's chair, I mean!)

Interesting choice there Darenhat; I'm also very curious to see who gets cast as young Kirk and whether or not they can shoehorn William Shatner into the script. It's very doubtful that Damon will be involved as all the characters are supposed to be in their mid to late 20's.

As to developments; I'm not sure of you are aware or not but Zachary Quinto (of Heros fame) has been signed on to play the young Spock. Leonard Nimoy will also be in the film and all indications are that he figures prominently in the story and his involvement will be far meatier than a glorified cameo. After reading the script and approving of Quinto's casting, he's become quite the booster for this movie. Also, relative unknown Anton Yelchin has been tabbed to play Checov.

As to a plot; there are rumblings that the story involves Romulans going back in time in an effort to prevent Kirk from being born, thus removing the biggest thorn in their side. The two Spocks somehow work together to foil the plans. Now this is just rumor (from AICN no less) so it should be taken with large quantities of salt.

Filming is supposed to begin around November and the movie slated to be released on Christmas day, 2008.

www.trekmovie.com is a very good site for keeping track on news and rumors regarding this and other Trek projects.

I wouldn't mind if they did do this, but having Nimoy in there too means like it sounds a half-hearted and very muddled affair already to me. Make a clean start if you want to, or make a film that fits into the old continuity; you can't go halfway. Is Nimoy supposed to be the old Spock or an aged version of the new SylarSpock?
  • TonyDPTonyDP Inside the MonolithPosts: 4,307MI6 Agent
The latest rumor I've read on some of the Trek sites (including AICN and trekmovie.com) is that Nimoy is the "Classic Spock" for lack of a better term and, in his attempts to restore the timeline, he ends up creating a parallel reality; this parallel reality is where the younger Kirk and company have their adventures.

By doing this the idea is that the filmmakers will be given greater freedom to tweak and change aspects of the classic Trek mythos without stepping on established canon and continuity and thereby hopefully bringing in new fans without badly alienating longtime trekkies.

Creating this parallel Trek continuity would, in theory, give them the freedom to change the look of the 23rd Century Trek universe and revise, discard and create new characters as they deem necessary while not completely invalidating what came before. For example, doing this would allow Abrams and company to sidestep the Where No Man Has Gone Before pilot episode and allow McCoy, Uhura and Chekov to be present for Kirk's first adventures even though McCoy and Uhura were not present in the pilot and Chekov didn't appear until Trek's second season.

Again, this is all rumor and conjecture right now. It also sounds a bit convoluted for the average moviegoer to grasp so I'm not exactly convinced yet that this is how it all will play out.

Yeah, same here. Trek was one of the first things I ever saw after coming to America in 1970 and some of my earliest childhood memories revolve around that show. Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of that crew have been with me since I was 5 years old; they're an indelible part of my life.

Nimoy will be in it and I may be in denial but when all is said and done I think Shatner will make an appearance as well.

    I'm pretty sure I know where I'll be on December 25, 2008.

Good news...it looks like the remastered Star Trek original series will be released on DVD in November. Amazon has list price of $138.00.

Unfortunately, that $138 pricetag is only for the first season; a bit pricey on Paramount's part. On the other hand, it will include the remastered episodes in both standard definition and the HD-DVD hi-def format. Also, there will be an interactive program on the HD-DVD side that lets you virtually navigate a shuttlecraft around a 3D redering of the Enterprise in real-time.

Here's a link to a site with pics of the box art and a video preview of what you can expect on the DVD, including that virtual tour:

And check this out. If you order the DVD set along with one of Toshiba's HD-DVD players, you get a snazzy remote shaped like the classic Trek phaser. Practical? Not really. But still cool from a collectable point of view.

It wouldn't invalidate what came before even if they did decide to restart, though. The Animated Series isn't supposed to be 'canon', but does that mean that no-one watches it?

I dunno, if this is all true (and as you say; it's so complicated as to be hard to swallow) then I think they've been very lacking in bravery. Hardly boldy going where no man has gone before, more just nearly going, but not quite.

It appears that Simon Pegg is going to play Scotty in the new Star Trek reboot. I like Simon Pegg but I have mixed feelings about this.

I think I'm going to find this movie very hard to swallow. The original characters are so intertwined with the actors who played them that I'm afraid the new actors are likely to come across as parodies or as so far from the originals that I won't be able to take them as the same characters. This is especially true of Simon Pegg and "Harold" of Harold & Kumar fame. . .I mean, Scotty and Sulu they ain't! The chick playing Uhura is also hot, but her hotness is of a different caliber than was Nichelle Nichols's. Sigh, grumble, grouse--I know, I know, and Daniel Craig doesn't look like Bond, either. . .

No he doesnt! But he did ok.

I think it's easier to accept a different type of Bond since the character's origins are in literature, where there's more subjectivity.

Reinterpreting a television role is something else. The original cast is simply impossible to match.

Alias was fun, and I enjoy Lost, but after watching MI3, I'm not sure what Abrams can bring to this project.

While there are 6 cinematic renditions of 007, there should only be 1 Kirk, Spock, Bones, etc. (though I agree Connery fans of '69 might not have felt agreeable, and that's understandable)

Sorry, I simply am not that open minded when it comes to this entire fledgling star fleet origin whatchamacallit. Seeing a few cameos will be nice though.

I read that Gary Sinise would be Dr McCoy which sounds good. He looks like the first Dr only younger. Hes good in CSI.

Sorry to burst your warp bubble Alex, but Sinise will most likely not be McCoy. At 54 he is simply too old relative to the rest of the cast, who all appear to be in the late 20's to mid 30's. This film is going to be one of Paramount's tentpole productions for 2008 and will hopefully reignite the franchise via more films or another TV series; Sinise probably wouldn't fit into that model.

I'm also having a hard time wrapping my arms around this movie. I think doing a prequel / reboot / reimagining of classic Trek is walking a very dangerous tightrope. Make the performances too close to the originals, and they run the risk of becoming parody; make them too different and they could be equally criticized. Also, the film supposedly involves time travel - a plot vehicle that has been done to death on the Trek shows and movies.

I'm also uncertain about some of the cast, especially Pegg and the guy from Harold and Kumar. Paul McGillion of Stargate Atlantis had been in the running for Scotty and he seemed to be a better fit to me then Pegg, but we'll see. The only major casting decisions left are young Kirk (Chris Pine is rumored to be the frontrunner), Dr. McCoy, a high ranking Federation captain (most likely Captain Pike) and Jim Kirk's parents (yes, parents).

In case anyone is not aware, Eric Bana has been cast as the villain, apparently a Romulan, possibly going by the name of Nero.

Despite all my doubts and misgivings, classic Trek is in my DNA so I'll just HAVE to see how this movie turns out. They most likely already have my money.

So what do we think of Simon Pegg? I'm slightly cheered by the fact he's not a lookalike like the rest- they seem to have gone for interpretation rather than re-creation, which I'll always prefer. There's more art in that.

And I thought I was being clever with my little technobabble pun. :)) I'm surprisingly composed about this movie too. A few years ago the thought of other actors taking on these roles would have sent me into hysterics - but today, the best I can muster is mild disappointment and extreme curiosity.

BTW, word is that Karl Urban of LOTR and Bourne Supremacy fame has been offered the role of Dr. McCoy. He has several projects lined up and if he can make the schedules work he'll probably sign on. I like Urban, he's been steady and solid in everything I've seen him in and he can be something of a chameleon in terms of his roles.

Also, sets are already being built and filming will start some time in November. According to Abrams and Co. the budget of the movie is in the $120 - $150 million range and the look of the Enterprise and other 23rd Century hardware will be recognizable to longtime fans.

I'm really looking forward to this one---although I'm anxious about being disappointed, as it's always dicey when one fiddles with icons :s

If they play their cards right, it could be very good---but Abrams and Co. are going to have to somehow find their own way, and not simply 're-do' what's been done before.

What in the world (or out of it! ;% ) would Trek do without time travel? :))
