As one DNA bred Shat-Child to another, you know that's not gonna happen
And I thought I was being clever with my little technobabble pun. ) I'm surprisingly composed about this movie too. A few years ago the thought of other actors taking on these roles would have sent me into hysterics - but today, the best I can muster is mild disappointment and extreme curiosity.
BTW, word is that Karl Urban of LOTR and Bourne Supremacy fame has been offered the role of Dr. McCoy. He has several projects lined up and if he can make the schedules work he'll probably sign on. I like Urban, he's been steady and solid in everything I've seen him in and he can be something of a chameleon in terms of his roles.
Also, sets are already being built and filming will start some time in November. According to Abrams and Co. the budget of the movie is in the $120 - $150 million range and the look of the Enterprise and other 23rd Century hardware will be recognizable to longtime fans.
Mild disappointment and extreme curiousity sums it up pretty much here as well. I think I've mentioned before how in the past the mere thought of remastering the original series would have given me a coronary. After we were given Wise's director's cut to feast our eyes upon I realized the benefits of today's skills a little more. And what series ever deserved cutting edge effects to match their extremely skillful stable of writers more?
As for Urban, wasn't he just slaughtering Vikings in Pathfinder? An interesting choice for the gruff country doctor, but I do like him.
Chris Pine is something of an unknown commodity. He really hasn't done any genre stuff and there's nothing in his resume that even approaches the magnitude of this part. We'll just have to wait and see some footage to find out if he, Quinto and whoever gets the McCoy role (Urban is still said to be the frontrunner) can carry the movie or not. I'm sure we'll have some photos and interviews by Christmas.
BTW, I wonder if he's related to Phillip Pine, a/k/a Colonel Green from the old TOS episode The Savage Curtain. That would make the Trekkies happy.
This Chris Pine fellow has never made it on my radar. The challenge with casting this role is that whoever takes the part has to present an air of being in control. Let's hope the rest of the cast doesn't make Pine seem milquetoast.

Chris Pine is the son of character actor Robert Pine, who was a regular on the CHiPS TV series.
From the pictures I've seen,I think Chris Pine and William Shatner have a shared resemblance-at least as much as Quinto has to the young Nimoy-and Pine can probably be made up to suggest young Shatner as the young Kirk, while still being his own man.
Like Gabriel Macht-who'll be playing The Spirit-Chris Pine's completely unknown to me.Frankly,I prefer casting someone like Pine over a famous actor with an already established image to play Kirk.Who knows?Pine might just be the right guy for this role.As noted,we'll have a better idea of his suitabilty for Kirk once we see him in character.
Seems a bit odd to me; he's a leading man type, isn't he? I would have thought this was more of a character part.
Agreed. If anything,Urban seems more like Kirk material than the next Leonard McCoy.Maybe Abrams intends on casting a few characters against type-in which case,we might be seeing Wanda Sykes as Uhura;rather than Paula Patton,Beyonce or Garcelle Buvais.

I dunno WG, Urban has always been something of a chameleon in his past roles and even has a similar facial structure to McCoy in some pics I've seen.
The cast seems all over the place. Certain actors like Quinto really harken to their predecessors; others like Pegg do not. Its an interesting mix and I'll be curious to see how it all progresses.
That's all the primary cast but according to the story on Urban, Christopher Pike is definitely in the movie and has not yet been cast. Also rumored to be in the movie are Kirk's parents.
Does this movie take place before or after Kirk grumbles that he'll never get used to women being on the bridge? How politically incorrect we'll be in the future!

That comment had nothing to do with the political correctness of the future, but merely with the expiration of several restraining orders placed against James T. Kirk during his previous command by female crewmembers.

One of my favourite lines from The Undiscovered Country was when Kirk kissed Iman, whom---we'd soon learn---was a shape-shifting villain!
McCoy looked at Kirk, shook his head, and irritably asked, "What is it with you?" ) ) )

Actually; who's left? Is that everyone? We've got Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Chekov, Uhura, Scotty and Sulu so... yeah- that's all of them isn't it?
Not exactly-there's still Yoeman Rand and Nurse Chapel.
Hmm... we've got everybody, then! Not exactly terribly important characters, those two- I don't think anyone would be too upset if they didn't appear. Chances are they will, though- I get the feeling this film is going to be slightly more fan-pleasing than is perhaps healthy...

Wasn't it Captain Pike who said that in the original pilot?
Anyhow, speaking of Pike, Bruce Greenwood has been cast as Kirk's predecessor in the big chair on the Enterprise.
Also, actress Rachel Nichols has all but confirmed that she has a part in the film as well. Not sure if it's Janice Rand or some love interest for Kirk (Carol Marcus maybe?).
So the only remaining quasi-significant roles left to cast are Kirk's and Spock's parents, both of whom are supposed to appear in the film, an another unnamed "Federation Captain" who will figure in the story in some capacity.
There are also rumors that a teaser trailer for the movie is already in development that will focus on the construction of the Enterprise in orbit over Earth.
Things really seem to be picking up steam on this one. The sets are up and filming started a couple of days ago.
As a dyed-in-the-wool Trekker, I couldn't help but smile when I saw the pic. Star Trek has always been a big part of my life and it's neat to see it coming back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one.
As for the notion of...
the Guardian of Forever making an appearance, Harlan Ellison, who owns the rights to that character has already sounded off rather loudly on how he expects to be compensated if it is used. His tirades against Trek and Paramount are the stuff of legend
...so, while the idea intrigues me I doubt it will actually be used in the final film.
Maybe it's the outfit, but he looks rather Romulan to me.
The fabric definitely harkens back to those old TOS shows with the Romulans; the tunic under the robe is also very reminiscent of what Spock wore in Star Trek: The Motion Picture under his black robes when he first comes on the Enterprise.
This ranks with Christian Slater's disorienting cameo in Star Trek VI.
Given the fact that she's only 36, it's a safe bet that her scenes will be flashbacks to either when she was pregnant or when Spock was a young little tyke.
Also, Ben Cross has been cast as Sarek. Given his age (pushing 60) I wonder what they'll do with him in the movie. Here's a link with more info:
Looks okay I guess...sorry but I really can't see anyone else playing Spock besides Nimoy so it's hard to get amped about something like this. I'm really not trying to be negative, I hope that the film does well and then a part of me doesn't want it to.
Some loser playing Kirk too... no Shatner cameo...

Reminds me of one of my all-time favourite Kirk gags. From B3ta:
Hope that doesn't offend anyone; makes me crease up
But the funniest Kirk quote for me is ...
"On Earth, we choose our mates."
Or
I'm a "grup" and I want to help you!"
Bonk!! Bonk! On The Head!

Do I sniff a Shatner cameo as Kirk's dad, rather than as aged Kirk remembering way back when?
Not exactly-there's still Yoeman Rand and Nurse Chapel.
