I think the Enterprise is supposed to be more like 842 feet, if I remember my stats; it's hard to believe they'd nearly triple the size of it for the remake :o

Just saw "Cloverfield", which was produced by JJ Abrams, so they naturally ran the Trek teaser in front of it...looks great on the big screen---again :D

Looks like the new Star Trek movie is also embracing the viral site thing. If you go to www.ncc-1701.com you can get three "virtual cameras" going which show work proceeding on the construction of the Enterprise. One of the cameras appears to be out of order, but if you wait a while, the following image eventually appears...

I've read elsewhere that that's been made up- apparently the fourth image is just a side view of the welder. Although if you've found that yourself I'll stand corrected of course! :)

That looks like about the right size to me, actually. I tend to measure in metres rather than feet, and the original Enterprise was just shy of 300 metres (I can't remember exactly, although 289 metres rings a bell).

Time to put my Star Trek geek hat on; if I recall correctly, the original Enterprise was 930 feet long (which works out to around 283.5 meters).

And, speaking of Trek, check out this home theater that some enthusiastic (and obviously very rich) fan had set up...

If you liked that setup, here's a few more themed home theaters that you might find interesting ( I wonder which one RogueAgent would like ;) ).

If I ever hit the lottery, the first thing I'm doing is buying a new home and setting up one of these dedicated home theaters.

I don't know why, but I had a feeling you'd be drawn to that particular one. :))

I'm not too sure about those stalagtites hanging from the ceiling but it is a very cool layout. As I said, if I ever hit the lottery, I'm getting myself a setup like one of those.

First, I really like these home theaters...who wouldn't want something like that?

but they must have been built by really nerdy guys who aren't married. My wife would kill me if I put in something like that with chairs that only seated one! :007)

I'm one of the few people who thinks Star Trek: The Motion Picture is one of the better entries in the series. After the majestic images of the Enterprise in her orbiting drydock, seeing it assembled on Earth does feel a bit backward.

On the other hand the plaque on the bridge of the ship from the original series does say it was built in San Francisco.

In a recent chat Roberto Orci, one of the writers, said something about how portions of the ship could have been assembled on Earth and then lifted into space. I wouldn't be surprised if they do something like that in the final movie to keep both camps happy.

BTW, in other Trek movie news, Playmates Toys is showing early prototypes of some action figures and playsets from the movie at ToyFair in England behind closed doors. I'm sure some photos will leak out but early word is that the costumes are reminiscent of those worn on the original series. More info here:

Maybe this was covered already but what style of wardrobe will we expect to see? The 60s one modified a bit of course or the one from the film franchise?

If it's Trek Begins, wouldn't it make sense to lean towards what started it all? ?:)

I presumed the article Tony's posted means at this point for the action figures...?

The way I read that article from Action-Figure.com was that the uniforms were from the new movie and harkened back to the original series. I'm sure we'll see some shots before to long.

    Did I miss something?

I thought the new Star Trek release had been pushed back to Christmas...now everything Paramount is running is saying 'May 2008'. This jives with an article about JJ Abrams on CNN that says the movie comes out this month.

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/05/01/film.startrek.ap/index.html

If this is true, Paramount is going to have a bell-ringing month with Iron Man, Star Trek, and Indy IV.

Actually Darenhat, I think that's a typo; Star Trek got pushed back to May 2009. They've finished the live action photography, ILM is busily at work on the special effects, and they could have easily made the original Christmas date. But, based on some early footage that everyone apparently responded very positively to, Paramount decided that it wanted to make Trek their tentpole production to kick off the Summer 2009 blockbuster season.

The movie is still 293 days away and there won't be a major presence at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con, but Paramount has released 4 new teaser posters from Star Trek where we get our first official look at Kirk, Spock, Uhura and bad guy Nero in character.

They all look good to me; Quinto in particular looks a lot like Nimoy, and the few glimpses of his costume suggest that it will be very close to the original. Nero also looks interesting, definitely a different look for a Romulan.

Click on thru and scroll down a bit for a peek...

Those last two posted links have been my first look at the new cast in character...and I must say, they look pretty good.

Eric Bana, as the villain, is almost unrecognizable...too bad they couldn't cast a Japanese (instead of Chinese or Korean?) as Sulu. I can foresee Simon Pegg having a very good time as Scotty :D

I'm really looking forward to this one B-)

Why is William Shatner Not in Star Trek?
    Source: AMC September 9, 2008

AMC's SciFi Scanner talked to Star Trek director J.J. Abrams, who explained why you won't see William Shatner reprising the role of Captain James T. Kirk:

Q: How do you react to William Shatner's ire at not having a role in the movie?

A: It was very tricky. We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn't quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn't want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It's funny -- a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.

Paramount Pictures will release Star Trek on May 8, 2009.

Abrams: "Well, his character died on screen."

    So did Spock's...yet he's not just a cameo. :v

Sounds a little like J.J. and Shatner might've bumped heads throughout filming had he gotten what he wanted.

Then I look at the cast credits on IMDB.com and damn it, no FINEGAN!!! X-(

:)) Gary Mitchell was supposed to have been Kirk's best friend, yet there's no mention of him either. I've read that screenwriters Orci & Kurtzman are real continuity buffs, so you never know, they just might be lurking on the grounds of Starfleet Academy somewhere.

As for Shatner's omission, I'm a little disappointed that he won't be in the film but I temper that disappointment with the knowledge that in many ways he has no one to blame but himself. He agreed to have the character killed off in the movie Generations.

Now, Spock did come back from the dead, but it bascially took the filmmakers two moves to get to that point, and they were all 25 years younger.

Even though Abrams is being very cordial and professional about it, the truth of the matter is that satisfying Shatner's ego could have undermined the film's mandate - which is to reignite the franchise for a new audience. I love Shatner, but he's pushing 80 and that's just too old to play a convincing action hero.

As a hopeless fan of The Original Series, I'm really looking forward to this movie and have my fingers crossed that Abrams will deliver a good adventure. He's really kept everything under wraps so far but as the fall wears on hopefully we'll all get to see a little more of this production.

I'm faithful to the original series myself foresaking all the other branch-offs of the title.

Would it have been too much to have just one little scrap before Kirk launched off? Then I'd feel as if Abrams were trying to connect the 60s series with the new.

Just one cheap punch to the jaw by Finegan and then he runs off while the little Irish tune is playing? "One for the road, Jimmy-boy!!!!!" :))

    Finegan's awesome. B-) :))

Hopefully we'll get Landru in a sequel. :v

    I can't believe I've missed this thread.

As a trekkie myself, (well, more a fan of NG than the origional..although I was brought up on Kirk and Spock, however Jean Luc just had that certain something :v ) this movie looks great.

I'm a fan of JJ Abrams, and I too would like to see this pulled off. Simon Pegg as Scotty, is just too cool (great fan of his) and I have to say that Chris Pine definatley has a Shatner look about him...

The poster's are excellent, and I like the use of the uniform colours..very retro....however a long wait is ahead!

Pegg is quite the Trek fan; he definitely knows his Trek history and seems to have a good handle on Mr. Scott. All the cast members have also quoted on how Pine has mastered the "Kirk swagger" as they call it. I'm expecting great things from this cast.

If they had stuck to their original release date (December 25) we would all have seen a lot more of this movie already. I hurled more than few expletives when the movie was pushed back to May 8, 2009.

I have to agree...I just don't see how it's feasible to have two Captain Kirk's on the screen, especially if one of them is Shatner.

I can't say I'm thrilled about new actors in the roles, but we love the characters and this is the only way to continue with them on film. That being said, Shatner has to go :'(

In regard to the new posters...shouldn't Chekov be like a toddler or something? I can hear Scotty saying something now about building warp drives while he was still in diapers.

Yes, I remember something along those lines, didn't he write some homage to it in his series "Spaced"...I saw the entire series about 5 months ago...(it was on Virgin's TV Choice) and I thoroughly enjoyed it...
