At least with James Bond we have those beautiful novels as a core to the charecter. Even if it is a sad truth that the producers - like the fans don't bother to read them.

I too have read multiple Fleming Bond novels as I have COUNTLESS Star Trek paperbacks as a child and as Alex has stated it's all in fun.

With a few exceptions, modern television is a great wasteland. You could do worse than rent yourself a few episodes. There were only 17 made and if you put your mind to it, you could probably get thru the entire series in a weekend.
I will in the future. However, there are a few modern shows (such as Deadwood, Heroes and Dexter) which are a bigger priority.
All in good fun 7289; yes, we needle Dan on a variety of matters, but it's only because we care and want him to expand his horizons beyond just movies and modern TV shows.
And I appreciate it. -{

I really didn't sense any real knives in the "needling" of Dan. But wanted to point out the greater "sin" of not reading Fleming.
Star Trek Novels? I recall a James Blish treatment of some of the scripts, but sadly consider other novels in the same vein as the post Fleming Bond novels, and that's not very high on the list.
I guess my preception is off, as those actors don't look much older than the "Jonas Brothers" to me. With the exception of Mr. Pegg (for whom I have great respect!) I haven't heard of a single one of them.
I had hope for this flick, but the "black shirt" thing reeks of Shatner always tearing his tunic up..... a bit too stagey.
I guess my grumpy state is due to being old enough to remember when Trek debuted on the TV ... and being a BIG fan at the time!
To be honest with you, 72, I don't read Trek novels much either. What I love is biographies. I just finished "From Sawdust to Stardust" on DeForest Kelley.
I spent the late teens reading the original Fleming novels and with the exception of Amis, consider the others pish posh. (not into the pastiches. I want the real thing, or nothing at all)
This may not be the appropiate thread for this, but seeing that Star Trek is also about technology, I thought it would a good place to mention my surprise during the US election coverage to see holograms used. CNN interviewed one of its reporters as well as will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas via holograms. Was anyone else as stunned as I was? Or am I simply showing my age? :v

Just had a look on YouTube: looks like a stupidly glossy special effect to me; not a real hologram. They don't exist like this- images have to projected onto something.
I can't believe that a news show would think that stuff like this is important.

I happened to catch that as well while watching CNN; it was just a typical live television effect where a person probably standing in front of a green screen was composited into the picture, complete with an el-cheapo "transporter room" style effect to "beam" him in.
It was really uninformed of Anderson Cooper to call it a "hologram". Not a big deal but I'm sure the sci-fi boards are in an uproar over his technical blunder by now.
And just to keep this on topic, 9 more days to go until the trailer...

NBC was doing the same concept. They seemed to love bringing it to people's attention and about how techy they were, but I felt really sorry for the actual newscasters. They were isolated in a green screen area with no actual 'news' environment to feed off of. She looked really uncomfortable with the 'acting' aspect of it. I recall reading the resumes of several local newscasters and their backgrounds were all in drama, and not journalism. I hope this doesn't become the norm for the industry.
Anyway, back to Star Trek...All of the cast shots look very colorful, but I'm not getting any vibes from the cast (accept from the guy playing McCoy - he's looking really good). The FX are great, and I wouldn't mind just watching two hours of the Enterprise flying around.

I saw that last night and thought that it was extremely CHEESY.
I immediately switched to another channel.
I hope that they don't try that again. Please keep the Sci-Fi and the political news SEPERATE.

Several sites including Trekmovie.com have stories on 20 minutes of footage from the new movie that was screened in the UK. There are some major spoilers therein so read at your own discretion. I'm sure the Trek purists won't like the apparent discontinuity with established Trek canon in a few scenes; though personally, I don't mind.
There will probably also be some backlash as to how the very young pre-Academy Kirk is portrayed, though interestingly, Shatner painted a similar picture of young Kirk in his Collision Course novel (co- or ghost-written by Judith and Garfield Reeves Stevens).
Afraid to say that I'm not too keen. It's just a bit awkward-looking proportionally judging by that shot.

Secondary hull is a bit different. I wonder how they did the hangar deck...but I like the struts and the nacelles.
Pretty cool B-)

It's an interesting design, incorporating elements of the classic ship and the movie version. The way the nacelle struts attach to the secondary hull are very reminiscent of the TNG Enterprise. The "neck" that connects the primary hull to the secondary hull seems pushed back a bit too far giving the entire design a slightly odd proportion.
Of course, some fans are aleady crying bloody murder since it doesn't look exactly like the TOS version. Personally, I never expected (or wanted) that myself.
Overall a thumbs up for me but it will take some getting used to. I'll be curious to see how it looks from other angles.

Well of course- it hasn't got black hair and is under six foot for starters. Oh hang on...
But yeah, I wouldn't doubt that a fair few fans are saying that- they are, after all, fans of Star Trek which means that they very much liked it the way it was. So it's perfectly understandable to prefer it the way it used to be; that's what being a fan is.
Personally I'm not overly keen on the ship in that shot because I think it just looks like the proportions don't work, but I'd be willing to see more.
Looks like Intel is going to be doing some cross-promotion with the Star Trek movie and have even put up a website here: Intel Trek
Not much there right now, other than a few pics (including a couple of new views of the USS Kelvin), the teaser and a little Flash intro from the shipyards where the Enterprise is being built, though it looks like there will be more content released eventually.
The Kelvin looks to be a little more TOS-style; as that's where Nero's attack occurs perhaps that's where the timeline diverges and that's why the Enterprise looks different?

Spock in front of viewscreen
Kirk & Sulu in what looks like a shuttle
A short article and some "before and after" photos of Kirk and Spock is here: Trek in Empire
If TOS had effects like that!
(certainly deserved them) {[]
You can just make out the saucer section in the bottom of the viewscreen; don't know if its supposed to be a reflection or another ship.
Empire also added another photo, this time of Zoe Saldana as Uhura:
I really like that picture.
And you can't go wrong with a beautiful woman either. :x
Nice couple of pics you posted, Tony.

Nothing like a pretty face to help sell the movie to you, eh Rogue? :v
I especially like the "I Dream of Jeannie" hairdo; different from classic Uhura but still very cute and very retro. Yummy.
She can open my hailing frequencies any day!
