I'm disappointed to hear that Connery won't be back. While I think it would be a mistake to re-cast the part, the idea of having one of the other Bond actors in it is great. Go for it..
More casting news...this is from the indianajones.com website:
Jim Broadbent Joins Indiana Jones Cast
June 20, 2007
Renowned actor Jim Broadbent has joined the cast of the latest Indiana Jones film, which began principal photography on Monday, June 18, 2007. Broadbent's rich and varied repertoire in film, television and stage includes many celebrated roles. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Iris, which also earned him the Golden Globe Award. Broadbent received a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his boisterous performance in Moulin Rouge!, and his memorable turn as W.S. Sullivan in Topsy-Turvy earned him a BAFTA nomination in the same category. Broadbent's other screen credits include Time Bandits, Brazil, The Crying Game, Bridget Jones's Diary, Gangs of New York, Longford, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. He was most recently seen in the action comedy Hot Fuzz.
Broadbent joins recently announced cast-members John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Cate Blanchett, as well as Shia LaBeouf and Harrison Ford in the making of the next Indiana Jones adventure. The film is a Lucasfilm Ltd. Production, directed by Steven Spielberg and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Frank Marshall returns as producer with Kathleen Kennedy joining George Lucas as executive producer. It is due out on May 22, 2008.
Also tucked away in there, which escaped my attention before, is the addition of John Hurt to the cast (not to be confused with William Hurt which was the case in the new Hulk movie discussion in a neighboring thread).
Here's the first official pic of Indy (snapped by Spielberg himself no less) right off the official site. I really like the cast for this movie and Harrison Ford still looks suitably rugged. Hopefully it will turn out well.
If Broadbent is replacing anybody, my guess would be the late Denhom Elliot who played Marcus Brody. Broadbent has that 'musty scholar' thing going.
That would be my guess as well--especially since Broadbent won an Oscar for playing a real-life musty scholar, John Bayley, in Iris. Then again, Broadbent has always surprised me with his range, going from dotty old gents to Boss Tweed in Gangs of New York, so he could show up as a master villain.
My guess is that this is a 'one-shot' deal. It took such a long time to create a script that pleased everyone that conjuring up a second might be too much to ask.
However...I'd like to think that if they can pull off a Raiders film in the fifties, with everyone accepting an aging Indiana Jones, it keeps the premise alive for another film. Ford doesn't seem to be driven away from the type of role, and Lucas is done distracting everybody with the Star Wars prequels. The only person who seems they might feel compelled to do something different is Spielberg.
If the script is good (and if Indy 4 shows that the franchise still has legs) I think there's no shame in an Indy 5.

Audiences seem to have accepted an aging Rocky Balboa. I have no problem with a 60-year-old Indiana Jones as long as he doesn't try to act like a 30-year-old.

And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman

What counts is what the heroine provokes, or rather what she represents. She is the one, or rather the love or fear she inspires in the hero , or else the concern he feels for her, who makes him act the way he does.

What sharp little eyes you have...
The appearance of the army vehicles and the location of the shoot seem to add credence to the rumor that the plot touches on Area 51 in Nevada. There's also a little bit of justice in that concept since Army Intelligence basically became Indy's nemesis at the end of ROTLA, snatching the Ark of the Covenant from him just like Belloq would have done.
I was going to go for the famous quote said by Sean Connery, "Wait till you see my teeth". But only he can pull that off. So i'll leave it be.

According to the biography on the official site, Indiana Jones was born on July 1, 1899.
Harrison Ford was born in 1942.
In 1993, Harrison Ford (age 51) played Indiana Jones for a brief cameo in the Young Indiana Jones chronicles. The intro states that the cameo takes place in Wyoming 1950 - assuming that it takes place in the winter of 1950 (before his b-day on July 1), that places Jones at 51 years old. Here's the pic:
So this is clear example of what both Jones and Ford look like at around the age of 50.
Now, Ford (age 65) is playing Jones again in the 1950s (year uncertain) and this is how he looks...

Indiana Jones is a part of my young adult life and yes, I'm going to go see this movie but man, it just doesn't feel the same... I'm not really sure why...
I just think that Spielberg let too much time pass for a followup and looking at these pics from the upcoming film, I can almost smell the liniment wafting from the bottom photo. He looks too old. He's a grandad in this isn't he? If so, then okay.
I want to see Indy in action; Ford already had a hobble as we all know...now imagine that hobble in the 5th power. I hope that the editing is good and we don't have an AVTAK moment.
At least Stallone looked impressive at 60 for Rocky Balboa. I hope I'm wrong because Indy is indeed a cherished character.

It comes down to the story. If they incorporate his age into the story then it can work and be entertaining. That's why I think the Trek movies with the original cast worked so well - they didn't hide the fact that they were all getting older; they embraced the concept and made it a part of the stories.

Man, I hope so. The films from the 80s were so awesome and I'd hate to see that legacy tarnished by Indy 4. On the other hand, I can't see anyone else doing Jones except Ford.

Admittedly, Ford's looking older in those pics, and as Tony said, if they embrace that fact, it will work. As much as I scoffed at Ford's action sequences in Firewall, they didn't come across as poor. I thought they seemed ludicrous because Ford was playing a (aging) desk jockey who typically wouldn't do those kinds of things. Indiana Jones is a completely different set-up. He's not going to be convincing in a 'duke-em-out' brawl with a young burly plane mechanic, but there's still plenty of ways to make the action believable.
You can see a small bit of film at the link below. Harrison Ford looking happy to be back, and Indy being held hostage by some soldiers. They look like Nazis but are probably Russians given that the film is set in the 1950's.
When I checked it out there was no audio. Is that a problem with my player, or is the video silent?
Still pretty cool to watch, though!
I've read a rumor on the internet which sounds intriguing, and would make for a good story element. As of yet, though, there's no real confirmation (possible spoiler below)

The audio was incredibly low, and my volume seemed to be turned up to the max. I suspect the problem is on their end. . .though me and thee may both have non-state-of-the-art players.
Interesting news there, darenhat. It's been a while since I've seen Raiders, but wasn't it established that the character in question is dead? (Not that it would matter in a fantasy.) Oh, and I read recently that Indy IV is supposed to be largely free of CGI effects. Hard to believe, given it's a Lucas production, but you never know!

You remember correctly, my friend. However, there were a couple of issues of Marvel's Indiana Jones comic that played around with the idea that he truly wasn't dead...so who knows?
He must be in a flashback. otherwise they'd be doing some seriously messing about with their "addressing Indy's age" thing. in Real Life John Hurt is only two years older than Harrison Ford. I know Harrison ford looks good for his age and is probably playing Indy slightly younger than Fords real age, but come on.
Even if in this John Hurt was playing Abner in his 70s and Indy is in his 50s thats still a little bit of a stretch. remember Abner was Indy's old College Professor and was a father to Marion...
..this is making my brain hurt
However Our Beloved Sir Sean is only 12 years older than Harrison Ford and he played his dad, so anything is possible.
