I just finished a Marvel pinup for my portfolio for upcoming cons I'll attend in the coming months; it's nothing much really.
I'll post it here to see what you all think of it...if I can keep my fanboy son from slobbing all over it. )
I'd still love to see your take on what Iron Man should look like; but knowing you it'll probably the the Hulk. It just better not be one of those lame-ass mutants. )

Its no secret that I've never been a fan of the X-Men books. The whole "we're misunderstood but we have problems just like normal people angle" always left me cold. They also changed allegiences more often than pro wrestlers.
BTW, no pressure or anything, but I look forward to seeing your take on Iron Man.

Well if you're expecting some Ultimate incarnation, I'm sorry to disappoint you but I don't subscribe to that look. Probably why I'll never get hired by Marvel to draw the character in its current vein...
Like you, being that we're just mere months apart, I grew up influenced by the 70s-80s versions which, IMO, were more fluid than the bulky or stocky interpretations of today. Like I've said countless times on this site, I was a fan of IM during John Romita Jr's run where his artwork made you notice "the character".
Being that there's a revolving door at Marvel with their editors, and they're all fanboys to begin with, going back to these classic looks for Stark are pretty much out of the question.
Even I have to admit that he's a technological superhero and that in itself means that the hero must evolve with the times to mirror our own.
I'd have a better chance getting hired on more grounded heroes like Daredevil or The Hulk...but for the paycheck, I think that I could conform to do Iron Man even if I don't agree.
As for you X-Men comment...I like the theme that they used: "US AGAINST THOSE WHO DON'T WANT TO ACCEPT US", thing is, it's a little outdated now with its terminology. I had no interest in buying the X-men books until John Byrne took over the title in the 70s. You do know that Marvel was just about to cancel the book out altogether until that point don't you?
And I hope that you don't think that Gambit, Thunderbird, Bishop & Forge are lame; they're my favorite ones. B-)

As I mentioned to Agent_M in the IM thread, I think the Ultimate IM is a little too mangaish for me; my exact quote was that he looked like something out of a Godzilla movie.

Yeah, he definitely much evolve with the times, but I still think you can do that and stay true to those classic renderings. The movie IM bears a stronger resemblance to the classic IM we love than to the Ultimate version.

And I hope that you don't think that Gambit, Thunderbird, Bishop & Forge are lame; they're my favorite ones. B-)
There have been so many mutants over the years that I can't keep them straight anymore. I do remember Gambit and Bishop and did like both of them. Probably liked Bishop a little more of the two, at least when he had hair. Although I always thought that they wrote him "weak" given his mutant ability to absorb energy. I tired of Gambit's doomed romance with Rogue and how Marvel kept milking and milking that angle. Forge was the one with the bionic arm, right? Don't seem to recall what his mutant ability was And I can't for the life of me remember Thunderbird's abilities either.
I did also like the Age of Apocalyspe storyline, I actually bought the whole run (and might still have them) but didn't care for how some of those characters then got folded into regular continuity. It was shortly after that I completely burned out on mutants. I haven't really followed them since then.

I think that's about the time I dropped out of the Marvel scene. Marvel, in their wisdom, began way too many storylines in the mutant titles (The Mutant Wars being one of them) that crossed over into the other mags. If you didn't follow all the other titles, the story became disjointed and incoherent. That, coupled with Marvel's summer bi-weekly releases, made it impossible for me to keep current on the storylines. When I finally had a chance to get back into the comics scene, I've been incredibly disappointed with what's available. It seems as if there's too much focus on art and not enough on story. first too much story...then not enough. Sheesh, I'm never happy.
One of the things I enjoy so much about RogueAgent's work is that it hearkens back to the way comics used to be drawn, IMO.

Very very nice Rogue, I like that one a lot. I like your take on IM's armor, elements of the classic Romita design with a touch of post-Extremis aesthetic. But is it me or does Nick Fury have a little Shylock in him?

Hey thank you all for liking the Iron Man pinup. Night, I really wanted and was tempted to do the Ultimate Nick Fury because he's slightly cooler by comparison and I love Samuel Jackson's talent but I felt that it wouldn't fit the aesthetic of the armor that I drew seeing as Tony has already stated, it's a mixture of the 70s-80s look...
I've always thought that Stark looked cooler with the goatee as opposed to the pornstasche and porn hair of the 70s.

Yeah, I've always preferred Hal with the powdered sideburns myself since it gave him such a distinction from the other superheroes. That's the way that I always draw him at comic conventions that I do; the fans seem to prefer that look too so you're not alone.

Last week my buddy from Massachusetts went to the New York Con and unbeknownst to me, carried alot of pieces of mine that he inked including comic pages he's currently doing of mine.
According to him, I got alot of great feedback from what was presented including my idol NEAL ADAMS! From what I was told, Adams was ripping new a**holes on aspiring artists' portfolios at his table sending potentials with their heads down or puzzled. My buddy showed him my stuff and asked Adams to be straightfoward about what was wrong with it...he told me Adams smiled while taking his time to look at each page and thought they looked great.
I did not expect that from him knowing his penchant to cut those down who want to get into the biz. He's just pretentious and weird like that so he's the last person I'd take my work to. But he liked my stuff! {[]
As did Joe Sinnott, Jim Califiore, Bernie Wrightson, Jim Starlin, Jim Lee and others. I may have a connection or two coming up BUT nothing, I mean nothing is etched in stone. At this point, I'm just excited about the news and wanted to share. Believe me, I could show you alot of turndown letters that I've gotten over the years including many from DC & Marvel. )

Nice pinup and story about Neal Adams Rogue. Also like your Tony Stark ad for RotGut, although the arched eyebrow and angular features give him a somewhat sinister look. You must have been in "Civil War" mode when you drew it.

Y'know I still don't half-believe my friend, Tony. The nightmares that I've heard from others who've come across Adams have been less than encouraging. That being said, my friend usually shoots from the hip and tells it like it is.
It's just not like him to outwardly lie to spare my feelings. He would put it in a gentler way and just told me. )

Yeah...maybe I was. I'm trying my best to channel the Tony Stark that I grew up with but the better part of this decade has me a little jaded on the guy.
The only things I like about him nowadays is the Casear haircut and goatee which I prefer doing when I draw him; he always looked too much like a porn actor back in the 70s with the hair and sleazy mustasche.
Do you remember that he used to wear those blouse-like silk shirts & boots with his pantlegs stuffed down in them? )
Thank you, man.
BTW...I just noticed...what's up with changing the wording in your sig? :v

I do seem to recall the thin moustache and "riding outfits" as I called them. It was the 70's Rogue; I guess that stuff was fashionable back then.
Speaking of which:

My son loves these old books I did as a child but I just cringe nowadays at some of the dialogue I put in them. I was no more than 11-12 years old. Thank God that I discovered girls shortly after this...

As much as I'm impressed by your artwork - 11 or 12 years old, sheesh! - your penmanship here is even more impressive to me as it's neater than what I can write today. I learned type when I was 11 or 12 because I couldn't write neatly to save my life. Even today, most people have a hard time reading my scrawls. I also like the asterisked references to previous issues. Very Marvel.

In between doing other art projects, I'm sketching up a series of Marvel Vs. DC pinups featuring matchups of formidible characters on both sides of the fence. They will be inked and colored to add to my portfolio.
So far I've loosely thumbnailed:
Superman vs. Sentry
Iron Man vs. S.T.R.I.P.E.
Wonder Woman vs. Ms. Marvel
Catwoman vs. Black Cat
Dr. Strange vs. Dr. Fate
Wolverine vs. Lobo
I'd be glad to take on any suggestions for REASONABLE square-offs from you guys. B-)

Knowing your fondness for DC, I assume the Marvel guys (especially Sentry) are on the losing end, am I right? :v
Just as an FYI, that Marvel vs. DC crossover from the early 90's had a Wolverine vs. Lobo contest in it.
Would Aquaman vs. Namor be too obvious a matchup?
You may also want to throw in a heel vs. heel matchup: how about Thanos vs. Darkseid?
I don't know if this is beyond the scope of your project, but how about the Green Lantern Corps. vs. Galactus (come to think of it, that would make a pretty cool crossover event).

Here's a pinup that I'm getting inked this week. I did this one during a little downtime...
Hope you guys like it.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I can't help it if Aquaman keeps changing his telepathic message. I'm sure it'll change again over the next few days... :v
Speaking of which:

My son loves these old books I did as a child but I just cringe nowadays at some of the dialogue I put in them. I was no more than 11-12 years old. Thank God that I discovered girls shortly after this...
The good ol' 70s. B-)

Wow, congratulations, my friend! You certainly deserve it. Just my luck, though---Oscar Jade won't be able to afford you {[]
I know that song by heart...it's got a good beat and you can dance to it B-)
