Not surprised; it's a terrific picture. (BTW, you didn't tell me why Penguin should be up my alley. :v)
Glad you like the Joker pic, Dan. It's a story arc worth picking up; might I suggest you checking it out yourself? You just might love that one.
You just remind me of Penguin, Dan in the idealogy sense. Comics would be beneath him as well.
Or, to be more direct about it Dan, you're a snob! )

"He’s a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman
Here's a crummy cellphone shot of my son's first official school art contest entry for his district. He finished and submitted it last week.
He told me that his art teacher loved it, even favoring it over a few talented 7th-8th graders she has. They've been jealous of him all week- being upstaged by a 6th grader and all.
If he wins, he'll get a round trip prize to Washington, D.C. plus some other stuff. We'll see.
ASTRONAUT: An Excercise In Shading
This wasn't his intended entry because the other was just too shabby & poorly rendered to enter and I told him so. I don't think that he appreciates that as he progresses in age & grade, he will run up on other kids who're as good or better than he is. Harsh, perhaps but I'd have been wrong if I told him differently...
With a little instruction from me, he went back to the drawing board and came up with this in a couple of hours.

Well Rogue, it looks to me like he took your advice to heart. Absolutely outstanding work there by Rogue Jr., easily his best effort yet that I've yet seen; and the subject matter is right up my alley as well. Love the detail on the flag and the way the LM is in shadow. Very true to photos that I've seen. Great stuff.
Something I did over the weekend while teaching one of my classes...
I really, really never liked Jason Todd. I recall calling in my vote about ten times to see the little $#*% killed off back in the day. Of course my class had no idea who that was; y'know...the whole age difference thing.
Rogue, tell your son that this is spot on. It's just awesome and I should know, having been an Apollo aficionado my entire life. All my best wishes. I hope he takes home the grand prize. You know who would get a kick out of this? Astronaut and painter Alan Bean. I think he would freak if he saw it. {[]

Thank you, Tony, Spec & SA-1.
We thought that you'd appreciate that piece specifically, Tony knowing your sci-fi passions and all. You don't want to even know what he wanted to submit at first; talk about taking something this important for granted. Very poor & lazy.
I told him not to get his hopes up too much because there is alot of competition out there from other schools but make the piece captivating enough for judges to give pause before making a decision. I don't like teaching overconfidence to him...always ends badly when people practice that.

Rogue, your Penguin and Joker pictures are just gorgeous! So a few kids didn't appreciate them--that's their loss.:)
The Penguin is really stunning. I wouldn't mind framing that retro piece myself ... -{

Thank you, guys.
As far as DC or Marvel are concerned, I'm planning on flying back home to NYC next March to do the annual con in Manhattan. DC Comics holds portfolio interviews there and San Diego ONLY. I have to impress.
I'm working on getting my presentation up to code and hopefully landing a job with one or the other. Like I've said...Batman Or Bust...even if it's just coloring books.
Hey, nothing fails but a try, right? Can't knock me for that.

It's in Manhattan?
Can I get in?

Yeah, I told you about in a text the last time I was staying in the city for a whole week. Remember I mailed you one of my comics from the post office off of Lexington?
Can I get in?
If the fire marshal doesn't turn you away first. Always, always overcrowded.
I'm supposed to share a table with my inker from Boston. I'll call you if and when we pull this off so you can get in without a hitch.

A couple of weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to receive some pics in the mail from the very talented WILLIE GARVIN! I like to share with the rest of AJB on just how good one of our very own mods really is with a pencil. I think these look great!
I hope that he keeps up the good work to one day become a very famous comic artist...in the meantime until that happens, I'll keep these sketches on lockdown. They might put my kid through college one day.
Thank you again, W.G.! Please do not stop working at it. {[]
There are a few more; I'll get those on here soon.

During my class last week, I was teaching the process of storyboard animation. I let my students come up with their own styles (not stressing Anime 8-) ) and they had some good designs for starters.
Just for Tony, I'm going to Warner Bros. to propose his favorite character's own series: AQUAMAN and start my own Rogueverse with my own look.
For Mr. DP: ) )
If only...

Nice rendering there Rogue; since its only a black and white line drawing we're spared the fruity orange and green costume. {:)
But why would you want to stake your professional future on a book that is sure to be cancelled before the first issue even hits the stands. {:) {:)
BTW, as I'm a traditionalist, I'd vote for Aquaman to have two real hands; none of this hook foolishness. And no silly beard, bare chest or Fabio style hair and bulging pecs. If he has to be lame, let him be old school lame. {:) {:) {:)

Thanks, guys.
I knew that would get you, Tony. Like you, I am old school with Fishboy's look and with the exception of the hook-hand, he should look pretty traditional. Here's the other designs that I did during my teaching session:
I plan on taking alot of these designs to the NY con and if they even spark an inkling of interest and decide to go through with it, I'll think of you, Tony and burst out laughing. )
Of course I'll want Andrea Romano, Paul Dini, Geoff Johns and Miguel Ferrer to do the project.
What are the odds? It'll be at least fun to find out.
Now, I will need your viewership support, Tony. :v ) ) )
I'll putup some more W.G. art goodness by this weekend. B-)

Last night I was arranging boxes in my studio when I came across a few more comics that I created back in the day.
My character from the 70s...STAR GUARD! Don't laugh much at the dialogue or the fashion. )
I think that I was maybe 12 or 13 years old when I created him; I know the inspiration came from Star Wars. ;%
I vividly recall drawing this one book on a weekend...all 10 pages. )
Well, thought I share since my son's all laughed out.

Here's one that I did when I was about 15-16 years old; for those looking at the issue number, yes, I did 100 issues (erratic page counts from ish to ish) of this title over quite a few years.
