Pan Paperback Collectors?

Hi gang!

I have been collecting James Bond for nearly 10 years, but narrowed down my purchases to British paperbacks, and eventually just Pan.

I was sorting through my collection the other day (currently 64) and made a list of all my earliest titles. Here it is!

Where there are numbers in brackets after the edition number, there are that number of that edition in my collection, each one differs from the other, be it number, price, cover etc.

Good luck with the collecting, you may think that I am a little obsessed, but it started out as collecting every cover, then every edition and now every variation (that I can find and afford).

I have some greetings cards designed with the artowork of some of the earlier Pan Cards. I'm sure that on some of them the front detached and turned into a postcard. It might be worth having a look out for them on Ebay and the like.

I think that I had over 100 paperbacks that are still boxed up in the loft at my Mums house. Once I get our spare room decorated I must get them from her.

One book that I know I have is a Coronet late 90's paperback of Colonel Sun signed by Sir Kingsley Amis. I won it in a JBIFC Competition some years back, I wonder if it's worth anything?

I collected most of my books from car boot sales and second hand bookshops. (Second hand bookshops seem to be in a decline in the UK - I don't know about other countries).

I remember a heartbreaking story of one day my cousin and I went a walk to a (now derilict) 2nd hand bookshop in our home town. It was the summer holidays and the shop was on the other side of town and we walked there but I (or was it my cousin I'm not sure as we both collected 007 books at this time) was rewarded with a Mint copy of the OHMSS USA Edition Movie Tie-In. First class - but if I remember correctly it didn't have the stills on the inside cover like it's UK Counterpart.

Anyway... to cut a long story short...

We didn't have a bag with us and there was a thunder storm on the way home which reduced the book in my pocket to a soggy pulp.

Heartbreaking. Such are many of my childhood memories.

That's a pretty sad story about your book Aston. No wonder they're all so scarce now-a-days.

There used to be a bookshop in Brighton that wrote the price of each book in big letters on the front cover using permanent marker. I don't think I ever went in there as a protest!

I also got a first edition Pan of Diamonds Are Forever a few weeks ago. I'd been looking for ages, and when I eventually found one, someone had used the back cover as a darts board. Some of the holes go more than halfway though the book!

I have scanned most of the front covers of my books, and I keep toying with the idea of getting them all printed and framed. How cool would your hallway look with the green menacing face of Dr. No staring back at you?!

I like the PANs too
when I recently rebuilt my collection this summer (Id long ago lost the PAN "still-life series I had when I was a lad) I went for the bold stylish series from the 60s
1) because i like them best and
2) because that series is actually complete
the 1970s series I think left out tMwtGG, in favour of the movie cover
and the various 1950s series by definition did not go past FYEO
also Colonel Sun uses the same font, so it actually fits neatly into the 1960s series and that set looks really good on the shelf
the ones that came out in the 1980s and later were very generic looking, and did nothing to add to the 007 style

but I have a vague question for you bibliophiles:
what sort of a publisher was PAN?
I have a copy of John Buchan's 39 Steps published by PAN in the 1950s, and the font used in the cover design is the exact same as the 1950s Flemings, I guess it was a housestyle
and looking at the ads in the backpages, they seem to have specialised in spy stories and other lurid, pulpish manly adventure
were they considered modernday penny dreadfuls back in the day?

My copy of the 5th (1962) cover is the Peff inspired copy (same as the 4th) with the yellow "007" band, which 'had' a yellow price sticker attached rather than a printed price. Never understood why that poorly rendered revolver was used rather than the auto
