Yeah it could be a play of semantics with this not to discourage purists of the '82 classic but I've read trivia tidbits like this while this film was in production:

The producers convinced Universal Studios to allow them to create a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing instead of a remake, as they felt Carpenter's film was already perfect, so making a remake would be like "painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa". However, the prequel still has the title of the original film, because they couldn't think of a subtitle (for example, "The Thing: Begins") that sounded good.

I mean you can take that for what it's worth. Studios have a penchant for misguiding potential viewers on stuff like this. WHITEOUT comes to mind when it first aired a trailer with a Thing-like feel a few years ago. It was a good thing that I had read the graphic novel years earlier because I might've been duped into paying to see it.

The inclusion of a young female scientist got me to thinking. The Carpenter classic has no female roles whatsoever. I can't think of another movie at present that's strictly an all male cast.

"I just cannot believe any of this voodoo b*llshit." (Childs)

Well the original 12 Angry Men did it, Alex but that was at a time when it wouldn't have been too uncommon. Movie like that probably wouldn't fly with audiences now.

BTW, I love the quote; Childs and Palmer were two of my favorite characters from the 80s version.

"Who says I want you goin' with me?!" :))
Mrs. Man Face: "You wouldn't hit a lady? Would you?"

Batman: "The Hammer Of Justice is UNISEX!"

The wiki page on the original novella, "Who Goes There?", also states that this is going to be a precursor to Carpenter's events. Thing is, what is this particular group of scientists going to do that is any different from the next group? I suppose they'll have more opportunities.

I'm a big fan of the 82 film, but consider the first one superior. Even if they stray from their sources and get a little old fashioned.

This quote from Garry gets me every time :))

"I know you gentlemen have been through a lot. But when you find the time... I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter ... tied to this f*cking couch!"

:)) Good one, Alex. However, I'll see your Garry quote and raise you:

    "I KIIIILLL YOOOOUU!"- Blair
Add in the fact of how he was shooting that pistol like he was in a old school B&W movie and McCready and Co. beating him down with the sound effects coming straight out of a Gunsmoke episode. :)) :)) :))

Blair's entire meltdown was hilarious with all of the winded mumbling he was doing. :))

Personally, I can't look at Wilfred Brimley without craving Quaker Oats :D (also liked him in Remo Williams)

But this is my favorite Kurt Russell. MacReady is the man. Yes, even better then Snake Plissken.

I watched the movie called “hills have eyes” couple of weeks back and it was the most gruesome movie I’ve ever watched. The theme music crept me out and brought a feeling of real humor. I still get nervous when I remember some dismay scenes of that movie. I highly recommend this movie to you as you’re a big horror movie fan.

I remember watching the Origional "Hills have eyes" on video as a Teenager, loved it. Because it was made on a low budget the grainy film and almost documentary feel to the filming ( as they couldn't afford huge camera equipment ) made it even creepier. the same can be said of "last house on the left" or "I spit on your grave" they just look nasty.
The mistake with the remakes is that they all (imho) look too Hollywood, great lighting, well filmed etc. Normally this would be a bonus to a re-make, but to me it hurts them. Good as they are I still think the earily 70's horror movies had a feeling of dread about them that so far no one has recaptured.

??? OK, I guess you could say the events depicted have a horrifying quality, but does the movie itself really count as horror?

    Talking of Hammer ...

Looking forward to the Woman In Black with Daniel Radcliffe. Trailers look promising.
