OHMSS is the Basis for CR's Score

Now here's an idea i like the sound of:
In the new issues of Hotdog (UK film mag.) David Arnold reveals his top 5 film scores. OHMSS is top of the list, but the cool thing is he sasy that the OHMSS title theme is the basis for the theme for the new James Bond.

How cool is that!

My initial reaction was 're-use an existing theme? How unoriginal!'. But there is a very strong link, IMHO, between OHMSS and CR. Also, it will allow Arnold to retain a very Bondian soundtrack without the Bond theme itself. I think OHMSS's theme is an excellent one, certainly strong enough to be carried over into another film.

Well I love the theme to OHMSS but it does smack of unoriginality and recycling. Then Arnold has always recycled Barry -- quite well IMO. So much for having a totally different sound than his last 3 Bond scores then.

You certainly have a point there - I was looking forward to a departure from Arnold's normal style.

I don't know why we'd want a departure from Arnold's usual work. DAD was a bit of a letdown but the other two scores are fantastic, IMO.

And he has quite a challenge this time to make it sound Bondian without using the theme itself.

I really liked all three of Arnolds last scores, including DAD. But he's the one that said months ago that a new Bond meant a new sound and that he'd gone as far and done as much as he could with the old sound.

And I'm sure anti-Craig fans relish the thought of Craig's Bond anthem being the one used by a man who played Bond only once.

It's great music. I enjoyed the homages to it in AVTAK. It might be just the right touch to help bridge Craig's Bond with the pre-Brosnan Bonds.

Ah - David Arnold must visit these sites regularly, this rumour has been shot down even quicker than the Goldfrapp one!

i like the idea of David Arnold using OHMSS score as a basis for CR and coming up with new themes and not always relying on the James Bond Theme, but i don't understand why he doesn't use both. similar to how he combined the James Bond theme with Surrender in the TND score. I hate the idea of an James Bond action scene without at least a portion of the James Bond theme. Thats what i want to hear watching a James Bond film!!!

I don't know why OHMSS is singled out, I mean most of Barry's scores are theme heavy, so the same claim could be made for TB, YOLT, heck anything. And Arnold has a strong thematic approach too, I don't see any difference with this announcement (well, over-analyzed quote).

to make it sound Bondian without using the theme itself.

What, no James Bond theme, this can't be the case by any means. There's always - at least has been - at least a little piece of it somewhere. :o

Well didn't they try that with GE's score and then when they heard it they complained there wasn't enough James Bond in it and then had certain sections like the tank chase rescored by another composer?

Well LTK had the Bond theme absent from its score didn't it. The gunbarrel didn't have it if I'm not mistaken. Very poor score for a very (IMO) poor movie.

The Bond theme was very much present in the gunbarrel, complete with the first twanging guitar since TSWLM.

As for the score, I find it very underrated. The Bond theme is used brilliantly when bond 'jet skis' behind the plane, mid take-off.

LTK - awesome @$$-kicking material, never put on CD properly. That'll change one day. And the Bond Theme is used at the most important occasions, just at the right places.

The flaw with LTk's score is, ironically, exactly what GE would be criticised for lacking, and what TND would be complimented for: its over reliance on the Bond theme. Leaving aside the horrible gunbarrel - which is entirely lacking in impact - Kamen knows exactly when to use the theme, a lesson Arnold has also learnt; use it when Bond is Bond, like, as IEU2D has pointed out, when 007 waterskis barefoot behind a plane, or when he dangles out of a helicopter to capture a drug baron. Unlike Barry, he doesn't have a "secondary" action theme to back him up.

I'd love to have a full version of the LTK score for many reasons, but principally this; I love the music that is played in all the casino sequences, which is lush and beautiful and full of character and fun.

I've never actually considered that, but now I do - you're completely right, there is no back up theme. In fact I can hardly think of an individual theme at all, even the main title song is unused.

But that gunbarrel is spectacular, and I will argue so to the grave - the tense opening brass is very effective, and it was great to finally hear the guitar again.

I really hope to see an expanded score out there soon, the Bond universe is sorely lacking one.

Let's just say it's not impossible, but the rights are currently hiding somewhere. And there's no money backup either, but now that's the smaller problem. Thank God Kamen used the National Philharmonic Orchestra, otherwise we could have said goodbye to it forever...

I like David Arnold. I think he's done a great job with the last three films. He really knows how to emulate Barry's style.

I am also looking forward to this new score, which I think will be closer to classic Barry than ever before.

However, I am also looking forward to something new, whether from Arnold or a different artist. We can only take so many re-hashings of John Barry's style. For example, I really enjoyed the soundtracks to TSWLM (Marvin Hamlisch), FYEO (Bill Conti), and Goldeneye (Eric Serra). After CR, it is time for a change!

But there is a very strong link, IMHO, between OHMSS and CR.

It´s great that Arnold uses OHMSS as template for CR. I also feel there is indeed a very strong link between both movies, maybe because they are different from the rest in that they´re more character defining.

I hope that the CR score doesn't eschew the James Bond Theme altogether. No other Bond score has done so (not even GE, after the rewrite)... so it would be highly pretentious to do it now. A problem with some of Arnold's earlier scores is that he has over-used the Bond theme to the point of tedium... let's hope it's not going to be a case of 'from one extreme to the other'.

That said, prior to Arnold, the Bond films which made the best, most dramatic use of the Bond theme were those which used it most sparingly.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.
