Happy birthday sir Roger Moore!

Today sir Roger Moore celebrates his 79th birthday.He portrayed likable gentleman-adventurer Simon Templar in the detective serial The Saint,based on Leslie Charteris writings.Here Moore displays the same mix of humour,wit and easiness as in his portrayal of 007.The Saint breathes a kind of optimism, typical for the 1960s.The Spy Who Loved Me was sir Roger s third outing as James Bond, and,in my opinion, it s his best film. Sean Connery is my favourite Bond actor, he is close second.Roger Moore holds the record for playing 007 most often, and for being the only Englishman to do so, so far.Our birthday bunny s the quintessential British gentleman.Happy birthday Mr. Simon Templar! -{

    It doesn't really belong here either, it should go in the birthdays thread in the off topic forum - but, it's Sir Roger Moore birthday and I'm not going to be a killjoy :D

    Happiest of Birthdays to a fine James Bond and the greatest actor to ever portray the legendary Simon Templar.Roger got the enthusiastic approval of The Saint's creator-and having been continually disappointed by all of the actors who'd previously played his character on the screen, Leslie Charteris was extremely selective."The Robin Hood of Modern Crime",The Saint was internationally famous long before 007 ever came into existence and was once the most popular adventure hero in Great Britain.

    It's interesting to note that Sir Roger's practically made a career of playing heroes--particularly on television.

    >>There's the gallant knight Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe--on the British TV series called(what else?)Ivanhoe.

    >>The dashing Irish adventurer and gold prospector James "Silky" Harris--Roger's lead role on The Alaskans

    >>The professional gambler Beauregard "Beau" Maverick on Maverick.Beau was a Texan who'd lost a hand of poker during the Civil War to a Union general who then paid for Beau to go to England where he picked up both a British accent and an extensive Oxford education.This was something which greatly embarassed Beau,since no self respecting Maverick had ever attended a school of higher learning--much less one as notable as his alma mater.However,the knowledge acquired there occasionally came in handy.

    >>The titled playboy Lord Brett Sinclair on The Persuaders.

    Additionally,Roger's even played Sherlock Holmes.In fact,he's the only actor in the world to have portrayed three of Great Britain's most famous heroes:The Saint,James Bond and The Great Detective.

    Sir Roger modestly refers to all of his heroic characters as, "Overgrown Boy Scouts".

    But putting his self deprecation aside,it's wonderful to know that Sir Roger is also a kind of real-life hero-- due to his continuous service for UNICEF,which is something he's often called the most rewarding work he's ever done.Sir Roger's halo is well-deserved.

    May Sir Roger Moore celebrate many more Birthdays yet to come!!!!

    Yes, I second that. Sir Roger really is good company in his Ultimate Edition commentaries. It's as if he gets alongside the viewer and enjoys the films with us, sharing his memories, insights and views about his time as Bond in a laidback, aimiable and honest way. And it's just him, too - he needs no one else to introduce him and no moderator to plug him with tedious questions! Sir Roger's "conversations" with the viewer - "over a glass of wine" and with his "shoes off" - are a relaxing antidote to the over-earnest, humourless commentaries on some of the earlier Bond films by those Americans from the Ian Fleming Foundation, which left me quite exhausted.

    Happy birthday, Sir Roger!

    Happy Birthday, Sir Roger. You're a classy guy. As far as I'm concerned, you were "The Saint" and I'll always think of you with that little halo over your head. Even better than George Sanders, and he was a tough act to beat. And although I have quibbled with your interpretation of 007 now and then, you still got me into the theater.

    Happy birthday to a true Saint!

    For all your humanitarian efforts through UNICEF. And for being an all-around decent gentleman with a wicked sense of Self-deprecation, which is itself a humble and unique virtue.

    All the best to Sir Roger Moore, Nobody does it better! -{

    Happy birthday, Sir Roger!

    How about a tip of the hat to an actor who has quietly gone about his business for over 50 years in bringing a smile to the face of many people around the world.

    I think we are getting to the point where even Roger's toughest 007 critics can sit back on a Saturday afternoon and be pleasantly surprised by just how much fun each movie remains (yes. even AVTAK). Roger is the 007 that will be appreciated more as the years pass. Effortless suave, like Roger's, is going the way of the dodo bird. Mark my words on that.

    There are some men that walk through life as if walking on air, without a care in the world, making life that much lighter with their presence. Roger Moore is one of those men. A smile from Roger lightens up everyone.

    (Check out the photo of Roger, Dalton and Brosnan at the GE premiere. Tim and Pierce have never looked as gleeful as they do here, sharing a laugh with an elder brother 007).

    Thanks for all the smiles, Sir Roger and hope to see you back on screen,

    What can I say, if it wasn't for Sir Roger, I wouldn't be a Bond fan. He was the first Bond that I ever encountered, and I knew as soon as I saw my first Bond film (I believe it to be MR although I could be mistaken), that I was hooked for life. I prefer Connery and Brosnan however Sir Roger holds a special place in my heart.

    Although there are one or two Moore films which I am not a huge fan of, one thing that has always struck me is how misunderstood his portayal was. Obviously he was suave (perhaps the suavest of tem all) but many people often criticise him for being effete and not being ruthless enough. All I can say to that is :p. Just kidding. :D Seriously, I think that Moore was just as ruthless as any of the other Bonds, and in terms of toughness, could certainly handle himself.

    So happy birthday to both a brilliant Bond (who, like wine, has only gotten better with age) as well as one hell of a nice guy. -{
