Tom DeSanto to Run City of Heroes
    Source: Variety June 7, 2007

Transformers producer Tom DeSanto is turning his attention to superheroes, securing the rights to NCsoft and Cryptic Studio's videogame "City of Heroes," reports Variety.

The plan is to adapt the massively multiplayer online role-playing game into a live-action feature and then transition it to television in some form.

The project revolves around a group of superheroes who live in Paragon City and must team in order to fight an invasion of aliens known as the Rikti.

In the game, players design their own superhero character and pay a monthly fee of $14.99 to battle supervillains, aliens, madmen and other criminals. An expansion of the game also enables players to create their own villainous character.

"City of Heroes" first bowed at retailers in 2004 and turned into a franchise, spawning sequel "City of Villains" and a comic book series published by Top Cow Productions.

Personally, I'd be more excited if plans for a JLA film were more of a concrete thing. It would make a much better ticket draw I'm sure...

Exclusive: Gaiman's Death Back to Life
Source: Josh Starnes June 8, 2007

While doing press for the release of the film adaptation of Stardust, writer Neil Gaiman talked to ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! about the status of his directorial debut, an adaptation of his Death: The High Cost of Living comics from Vertigo.

"Everything is moving, slowly, but it's moving... Guillermo del Toro is executive producing, which is a wonderful thing... and I'm actually planning on going out to Prague very, very soon to do some stuff with Guillermo on 'Death.' I think it definitely seems like it's going to happen."

"Death" involves a teenager named Sexton who's been contemplating suicide. He is rescued by a mysterious teenager who claims she is Death herself, spending one day every 100 years on earth to learn the value of the lives she takes.

The film takes place over 24 hours as Sexton learns to love life by spending a day with Death.

I remember taking a shot on this book when it came out as a monthly in '92. This is an entertaining mini-series if you enjoy Gaiman's style of writing. It'll be interesting see see how this will look on the big screen. Probably quite similiar to MirrorMask...

It killed me too. :)) I loved her asking Raja why he denied being Superman, and he's like, Oh my mum told me not to tell anyone. Then when they are 'flying,' he drops her on purpose, so he can catch her again. I couldn't believe that. :o Can you imagine Christopher Reeve dropping Margot Kidder for fun in the US Superman? The audience would boo him. Still, I'm very impressed that they managed to persuade Robbie Coltrane to star in this production. :))

William Hurt Joins The Incredible Hulk!
Source: The Hollywood Reporter June 13, 2007

Oscar winner William Hurt has joined the all-star cast of Marvel Studios' The Incredible Hulk.

The movie, which Louis Leterrier is directing, sees Bruce Banner/Hulk on the run, trying to avoid capture long enough to cure the condition that turns him into a monster. Hurt will play Gen. Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, the man who has dedicated his life to capturing the Hulk -- and who also is the father of Banner's love interest, Betty Ross.

"Hulk" is shaping up to having one of the stronger comic book movie casts in quite a while as Hurt joins two-time Oscar nominee Edward Norton, who is playing Banner, Liv Tyler as Betty and Tim Roth as villain Emil Blonsky/the Abomination.

Zak Penn wrote the latest big-screen adventure of the green goliath, which Universal Pictures is distributing.

The film is being produced by Avi Arad, Gale Anne Hurd and Kevin Feige, while Jim Van Wyck, David Maisel, Ari Arad and Stan Lee executive produce. Shooting is slated to begin this summer in Toronto.

I'm a big John Hurt fan - have been ever since I saw him as Caligula in I Claudius on PBS's Great Performances. But as Thunderbolt Ross? I don't know about that one; he doesn't strike me as having the physical presence for that kind of a role. We'll just have to see how he ends up playing it.

Kevin Feige on Marvel Studios' Slate!
Source: Ryan Rotten June 14, 2007

ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! talked to Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige on the set of Iron Man on Wednesday about the company's future slate. What's next for the company, which has both the Jon Favreau-directed project and The Incredible Hulk hitting theaters next year?

"I have a writer on 'Captain America' right now, hoping to get a director on that very soon to get that into the pipeline within the next year. Same thing with 'Thor,'" said Feige. "Mark Protosevich has delivered a 'Thor' script, David Self is writing 'Captain America.'"

Feige talked a bit more about Captain America: "We'll have to play with Captain America as being a patriotic propoganda machine on one hand but also being a very human Steve Rogers interesting fascinating hero in his own right." Is the script they're developing a period piece? "Right now what we're developing would be about half and half."

And what is the status of the Wolverine spinoff? "We have not signed a director yet, Fox has not signed a director yet... there's a lot of people in the mix. It's hard, I think it's very close. I think 'Wolverine' will be released first [before 'Magneto']."

He added that for The Punisher 2, "Lionsgate is putting that one together with us right now. I think they'll be announcing a director in the near future and another star in the near future. The only reason I have any interest in doing another 'Punisher' movie is to do a better 'Punisher' movie. And if Marvel felt we wouldn't be able to do that, we wouldn't make it. We have a director, we'd like to announce an actor and a director together."

What about a Ghost Rider 2, any plans? "Not that I've heard, I know they're promoting the DVD right now. But no discussions yet."

For the big screen Sub-Mariner adaptation, "Jonathan Mostow is doing a rewrite on [Self's] script with the intention to direct and that script should be coming in in a few weeks."

Feige said that an Avengers movie could be possible in the future. "What was preventing certain characters from crossing over in the past is they were all divvied up for different studios with gates between them and they couldn't play in the same sandbox. Now we have Hulk, and Thor and Captain and Iron Man and Ant Man... it would certainly indicate to me that it might be fun to see them all in the sandbox at one point. But certainly we're introducing them and building them in their own franchises first." Zak Penn will write the script for the film.

Any chance of a Marvel Zombies adaptation? "'Marvel Zombies' would be pretty cool," said Feige, who added that he'd also love to "put a 'Power Pack' script into development, I'd love to do a PG sort've 'Goonies'-style, those films I love as a kid in the '80s growing up. I'd love to do something like that with 'Power Pack."

After the Iron Man movie (stay tuned for lots more from the set!), the second one out of the gate for Marvel Studios' independently-produced slate is "Hulk." "'The Hulk' movie will be different from the first one 'cause this one will be good," said Feige. "There are certain elements of the first film that I'm proud of, there are other elements that I'm not. In looking to reboot and start the franchise fresh and new, we wanted to start with a clean slate."

While he says he loves the first film's cast, he's really excited about this one (Ed Norton, especially).

    Brandon Molale on Shazam!
    Source: Lobo June 24, 2007

E! Online talked to Brandon Molale about the rumors that he may be up for the part of Captain Marvel in Shazam!. Here's a clip:

No, the script hasn't even been written yet. But I'm just flattered that they're even considering me. I was shocked. They're making every comic-book movie as it is, and it's like, you know, I know my abilities as an actor. I'm a good actor. I just need someone to give me something I can sink my teeth into.

Visit the link above for more of the interview.

"Visit the link above" indeed! I had to dig it up for myself, and here it is, courtesy of E!:

The Man Who Might Be Captain Marvel Speaks!

I just got back from the laid-back set of Farmhouse. It's a thriller that features Steven Weber and Kelly Hu as bloodthirsty, horny demons. Literally, demons. I will tell you more about the movie in the coming weeks, but first, we gotta talk Brandon Molale.

Rumors are flying that Brandon is up for the part of Captain Marvel in the Shazam movie. The other main contender, if you believe fanboy message boards, is The Rock. So, of course, I grilled Brandon about the excitement. And it was tough, because all I wanted to do was talk about Dodgeball. How great was Brandon as Blazer? Okay, okay. Onto the comic talk.

So tell me about all this Shazam excitement. They say you may be the man.
There's a lot going on. My name and The Rock are the two names. I had people contact me over a year ago about this. So I said, Hey, you know what, look. If there's any DC or Marvel character that I look like, it's this guy. The similarities are ridiculous. I said I would love to do it.

How are you doing with all the tension and the excitement of a possibility like this?
You know what, at the studio they might want to go the whole route and have a big star. But then again, I look at what Brandon Routh did for Superman. He just did soap operas. He hadn't done a whole lot. Not to take anything away from him, he's a good actor, but he hadn't done a whole lot. But he's not an established actor, same with me. You've seen me in a lot of stuff, but I'm not an established guy. But hey you know what, give me the opportunity.

Have you gone in for a screen test?
No, the script hasn't even been written yet. But I'm just flattered that they're even considering me. I was shocked. They're making every comic-book movie as it is, and it's like, you know, I know my abilities as an actor. I'm a good actor. I just need someone to give me something I can sink my teeth into.

Do you have your agents pursuing this?
You know, I've got people pursuing this. You got to make it happen. You can't rely on just one person to make it happen. You got to have multiple people out there working it for you.

Have you run into The Rock at all?
You know, he works out in my gym, and I've known Dwayne for years. I was in The Rundown with him. So, it's, like, he's a great guy.

I hope you teased him about this whole situation. Yeah?
There's a character named Black Adam in the Captain Marvel world. And he's actually evil. And [The Rock] looks a lot more like Black Adam than he does Captain Marvel. So, I would love to see him play the bad guy. You don't ever see Dwayne play the bad guy…and who doesn't want to be the villain?!

Sounds like that should make everyone happy. Problem solved!

Looking at the photos of Molale and The Rock on this site, it's clear that Mr. Johnson looks downright sweet compared to Molale. He's the man--he's got the looks, the build, all of it. As for a villain--Black Adam is fine, but save him for a later film. We all know that Captain Marvel's arch-enemy is Thadeus Bodog Sivana, and that's the kind of role any big-name actor would love to play!

    Heh! Heh! Heh!

"Mayor of Castro Street" Holds Up Singer's Super Sequel, "Man of Steel"

Posted by RT-News on Sunday, Jul. 01, 2007, 03:19 PM

Ftopel writes: "Bryan Singer had previously told us that the "Superman Returns" sequel "Superman: The Man of Steel" would be his next film after "Valkyrie." His producers tell another story. Neil Meron and Craig Zadan have Singer lined up to direct "The Mayor of Castro Street," a story of gay rights activist Harvey Milk, within a year.

"The next Superman, that's a ways off," claimed Meron, with Zadan adding. "Don't worry about it. Trust me. We may even start preproduction on Harvey Milk while he's on post production on the Tom Cruise movie."

These boys are determined to make their movie, comic books be damned. "We've been working on that for 15 years," said Meron. "It started off with Oliver Stone and Robin Williams. Now it's Bryan Singer directing, Chris McQuarrie writing the script."

Producing partners Meron and Zaden have had quite a prolific run of producing projects, including the Emmy and Golden Globes-winning TV films "Gypsy" and "Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows," 2002's Oscar winning Best Picture "Chicago," and the upcoming New Line release, "Hairspray.""

Considering that apparently Tom Cruise has been banned from filming in Germany, Valkyrie could be delayed and WB might get impatient and hire someone else to direct The Man of Steel. Like you Rogue, I would not be disappointed if that happened. :D

If Singer gets his way and puts Superman on the backburner to do other projects, he must have something awfully juicy on the WB execs. I just don't see them waiting on this guy especially after how lukewarm SR was received.

There has got to be a director available out there who can bring stability back to the franchise and exnay that shower curtain cape. 8-)

There are plenty of people. If WB really wants to keep Superman flying, finding other directors really shouldn't be a challenge.Hopefully none of them would respond by saying something anal like,"Oh no--Not Superman.Superman's Bryan's character.I couldn't do him as much justice."Bret Ratner might be willing to take it on--even Michael Bay, if it's going to be action-packed.

What do you guys think of James Cameron? I know it's nearly impossible but the man was going to do a Spidey project once. Imagine him injecting the testosterone back into Superman? I'd love to see it.

Ratner would do a better job as W.G. said although he may be labeled as Singer's scrap-taker.

Y'know,Rogue,I really don't think anybody's going to really care who directs Superman if they get it right.I'm not sure Singer's the reason so many people went to see SR.He advertised it exceptionally well with the Bluetights Network, but surely somebody else could continue the series.I think Sam Raimi would be great.Cameron could do a fantastic job with Superman. As a fanboy,I'd also like to see his takes on Batman and Green Lantern, too.Maybe there are more Raimi and Cameron types just waiting to be noticed.
