Interesting read but the plot seems very top heavy to me with too many threads. I'll be curious to see if they can fit that all in and still keept it coherent. I'll miss Thomas Jane but am happy to see to see that the Punisher will be returning to New York, where he belongs.

Yes you have a point but my bias for Castle is hoping that this comes together nicely. I think that Stevenson will do an imposing job in the starting role. B-)

Punisher 2 Working Title and Start Date
Source: Diva August 9, 2007
Superhero Hype! has learned that the working title for Lionsgate and Marvel Studios' new Punisher film is The Punisher: Welcome Back Frank. Shooting is set to start in Montreal late September.
To be directed by Lexi Alexander (Hooligans) and starring Ray Stevenson (HBO's "Rome") as Frank Castle/The Punisher, the action-thriller was written by Nick Santora, Kurt Sutter, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.
The film will be set in New York, where Frank Castle runs up against a mobster.
Weren't parts of this story already done in the previous movie? I think Garth Ennis wrote it...

There's a featurette on the Region 2 DVD, in which the director says that 'Welcome Back Frank' was the main reference point they used when putting the film together. It's a great title though, so I am happy for them to use it.

I remember when we were kids, I'd play The Punisher with a black tshirt that I painted a skull on, my plastic guns (orange & green...guns didn't look very realistic then. ) ) and my mother's Palmolive dish gloves. Take about creating an effect. )
My muscular buddy was Hulk because he never owned a decent tshirt so he just finished ripping it up to get the Lou Ferigno look and a guy who just wanted to hang with us because no one else would befriend him was Rick Jones.

Memories indeed. My mom, who is an excellent seamstress, made me a couple of Superman costumes for Halloween when I was little. One of them was even in darker shades of blue and red for a more badass look (well, as badass as possible for a 6 year old). Talk about being ahead of the times. )

Matthew Vaughn to Direct Thor
Source: Variety August 10, 2007
Marvel Studios is setting Matthew Vaughn to direct Thor, based on the Marvel Comics character. Marvel is aiming for a pre-strike production start this winter.
Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) did the adaptation of the comic book franchise that launched in 1962. Thor is a blonde-tressed, hammer-wielding hero who's sent to Earth to protect mankind.
Vaughn's deal is closing just as Paramount releases the Vaughn-directed Stardust today.
Thor marks Vaughn's second effort at a superhero pic. He was attached to direct X-Men: The Last Stand before bowing out for personal reasons. Vaughn, who produced the Guy Ritchie-directed films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, made his directing debut with the Daniel Craig starrer Layer Cake.
Just make sure it's THIS costume and not the tacky one from the Hulk tv movie...

Speaking of the Thor movie, IGN reports Marvel wants pro wrestler Triple H cast as the god of thunder, although director Vaughn is said to be dead set against it. Maybe its just me but casting an active pro wrestler in the lead of any movie automatically kills its air of legitimacy for me. Thor is supposed to by a noble character, not some white trash muscle bound beach bum with a speech impediment. This would be a stinker of a casting decision IMHO. There are also rumors that Rome's Kevin McKidd is in the running; still not ideal, but a far better choice if you ask me. Here's a link to the complete article:
On the subject of Kevins, maybe Kevin Sorbo's available. He's of Scandinavian heritage(Swedish,I think),and can act and is big.Yeah,he played Hercules(who always looked weirdly Celtic to me),but he also played Gene Roddenberry's Buck Rogers character Dylan Hunt.I think Sorbo's now in his late 40s--maybe 50, but he probably still looks good and no one said Thor has to look like he was 25.Give him a blond wig. He's not a favorite actor of mine, but I think he'd look right in the Kirby costume and I'd hire him if I was in charge of this film and if Sorbo was interested.
I like Kevin Sorbo; if memory serves he was even up for the part of Superman in Lois and Clark at one point before it eventually went to Dean Cain (I would have gone with Sorbo myself). According to IMDB Sorbo is 49; that probably makes him less attractive for what I'm sure Marvel views as another multi-picture franchise. Then again, maybe Vaughn would like somebody with a few wrinkles.
It will be interesting to see how the character is handled. Will they go the Xena/Hercules mode and have him speak colloquial English. Or will he be Kirby's Thor spewing "By Odin's beard!" and "Verily!" Personally, I'd like to see the latter.
Vaughn's probably got a British actor in mind for this part.Hey--maybe his buddy Daniel Craig's interested.Thor doesn't have to be tall--not when everybody else in the cast can be shorter.
Actually,McKidd is a pretty solid candidate.I watched both seasons of Rome and think that both he and Ray Stevenson gave outstanding performances. If McKidd(who's in his mid 30s, I think) should wind up as Thor, the character will be in very good hands.McKidd would have no trouble making those pseudo-Shakesperian Valhalla phrases Stan Lee originated sound natural.
IESB has some more info on the proposed JLA movie and how it may impact future Superman and Batman films. The article posts some seemingly contradictory informatio, saying that the JLA movie is gaining critical mass even as Bryan Singer & Co. continue to to pre-production work on the Superman Returns sequel. Clearly, somebody is going to be disappointed. Also uncertain is what participation (if any) Christian Bale and Brandon Routh will have.
Also according to the article, George Miller is all but signed to direct the JLA movie and Barry Allen will be the resident Flash (yeah!!!) while John Stewart will be the resident Green Lantern (boo!!!)- very disappointing and odd since Hal Jordan is so much more popular these days. Rumors abound that one of the JLA members gets killed off ... maybe it'll be Stewart. :v The plot supposedly revolves around the OMAC storyline and also includes Maxwell Lord.

{[] If they do indeed get Miller that would be a major boost. Interesting to note that one of the screenwriters appears to be Kieran Mulroney, (I'm assuming Kiernan is a mis-spelling). If he can write something as witty as a movie he once starred in called Life Among the Cannibals then this should be something. But do you think Christian Bale will be involved? I know Routh will play Superman, because let's face it he won't be doing anything else.

Well, to me, Stewart's not that bad and I'm an old school guy who automatically associates the GLs with Hal Jordan. I mean you're talking to a guy who refused to purchase another Green Lantern comic because of the direction DC chose to take the character in the early 90s. It wasn't until Jordan's return as of late that I started back and that stint went for what? 10-13 years? So yes, Tony, I do feel your pain.
John Stewart's chances of being the JLAer to perish in this project seem highly unlikely considering the backlash that might arise (only black member of the team used as the fall guy. Smart move. 8-) ) IMO, that would be too glaring.
However, despite the fact that my favorite comic book artist Neal Adams created Stewart and he's better associated with the animated series of late, Warner should keep the cast of characters as original as possible. And that's Jordan.
If the powers-that-be want to keep some level of political correctness, might I suggest they use the current minority members of Black Lightning & Vixen (hopefully portrayed by Halle Berry ).
Don't get me wrong, Stewart's a pill, or at least that is how he is conveyed from the cartoon. He has an impulsive, sometimes ignorant behavior that has had me murmouring "a-hole" under my breath many times. But it could be worse... we could have that anal-retentive Guy Gardner (I CANNOT STAND HIM) or the more flamboyantly garbed...Alan Scott. I mean I can't take the Corp seriously when you dress like him with the vampire cape and all. )
Also, don't hold your breath on Bale being Batman on this unless it's only in cameo. It would just clash too much with the foregone conclusion that there will be a sequel to TDK. Routh being on board as Supes, I don't know...

In my opinion Rogue, Stewart IS that bad. The comics had him vacillating all over the place - angry African-American who railed against "The Man", complacent superhero who doubted his powers, born leader who kept getting his ass handed to him, they made him a wannabe Guardian at one point, then he became a Darkstar. Clearly, the writers never really got a handle on the character and no matter what they tried, sales sagged. His animated incarnation is even worse; he basically is Guy Gardner from the 80's and 90's; and the shoot first, ask questions later attitude is so outdated as to be embarrassing.
If they want to go PC they could very well go with The Martian Manhunter's alter ego John Jones. I could see Lawrence Fishburn as Jones and also lending his voice to Jonnz.
I was also thinking that Flash may be the one to be killed off, since Barry Allen did "die" and go into the Speed Force in the comics.
Also, don't hold your breath on Bale being Batman on this unless it's only in cameo. It would just clash too much with the foregone conclusion that there will be a sequel to TDK. Routh being on board as Supes, I don't know...
I think Routh would happily sign on to any high profile project. As John Drake says, casting agents haven't exactly beaten a path to his door. Christian Bale is the wild card and I agree that he would probably walk before taking part in an ensemble piece like this. I have a feeling he is beholden to Christopher Nolan and will only do Batman as long as Nolan is involved.

Yeah, I remember Stewart as ANGRY BLACK MAN back in the day; every African-American hero with the exception of Black Panther was that way. Part of that can be explained because it was the blaxploitation era of the 70s. It was as common at the time as bell-bottom slacks. )
Other than Neal Adams' run on Lantern/Arrow, I was not very interested in Stewart so the info you provided is news to me.
As for J'onzz being portrayed by Fishburne, that's not particularly "pc" since Martian isn't a realism in our world. Not many hate crimes over history involving people of green decent. )
You could get an actor of Indian race to play him as well; his role doesn't really matter because he's green anyway and could be approached a tad more universal. Thing is ol' Laurence is too old and definetely not imposing enough to play Manhunter who's taller than Superman. Had you said Terry Crews (The Longest Yard) then I'd agree. All you'd have to do is spray paint him and voila!
No, if "pc" is the way to go, it would have to be an outright character of color and not "green." At this point, that is the only conclusion that I can come to as to why Stewart will be in this and not Jordan...

Actually Rogue, I was suggesting Fishburne for John Jonnz's human-shaped alter-ego of John Jones. But you're probably right, the PC police will now go for it. What can I say, I'm grasping at straws here as I really want to see Hal in a live action film. Maybe it's time to start a new website:

Breaking: Ryan Reynolds Says He’s Up For “Justice League” Film
Published by Josh Horowitz on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 5:38 pm.
Ryan Reynolds says “The Flash” may yet live. It just might not be in the superhero’s own film first. Just hours ago, our own Shawn Adler peppered the oft-rumored star of “The Flash” about his association with the DC comics speedster and here’s what Reynolds said: “‘The Flash’ isn’t dead at all. There’s talk of it being a JLA movie, the Justice League having them all together. And then there’s other talk of doing a ‘Flash’ movie with [director] Shawn Levy.”
Rumors of a Justice League movie have gained momentum in recent weeks. Now we’re hearing it straight from one of the potential stars’ mouths. When asked if he thought the JLA film might happen first, Reynolds told us, “[it] might, yeah. I don’t really know how much I’m allowed to talk about that stuff. But I’m sure they’ll figure out something. It’s no secret that they have a JLA script and it’s a project that’s in development – the contents of which, who knows. We’ll see.”
For an actor who’s no longer “officially” attached to play a role, Reynolds sounded very excited about the prospect of a Justice League film, “I’d love to see a full on Justice League movie done, the scope of which is just enormous. I think it’s something they can pull off.”

Ray Stevenson Talks Punisher
Source: Advanced Dark August 20, 2007
Superhero Hype! message board member 'Advanced Dark' talked to Ray Stevenson via e-mail at Ray-Stevenson.com about playing the new Frank Castle in Lionsgate's The Punisher: Welcome Back Frank, to be directed by Lexi Alexander. Here is what the actor said about taking on the role:
Although i am still very much in the embrionic stages of developing and discovering FRANK CASTLE's character; what i can say about my approach so far is that I dont wish for anyone to walk out of the theatre wanting to 'be' FRANK CASTLE - Let me explain, I would be mortified if, for any reason, some kid at high school wanted to reach out and right the wrongs of bullying or rejection or isolation by deciding to "tool up" and take out the bad guys ! It is my full intention to have FRANK in such a dark place and do such violence on those beyond redemption that you should feel glad that there is someone who lives in the dark so we may live in the light. (and you cant wait to see what hell he brings to those targeted by him) My training program is the most comprehensive i have ever undertaken and hopefully we will bring all his skills to bear - and then some! Sorry it is a bit sketchy at this stage but we are driving forward and will stay true to the essence of THE PUNISHER!
The new movie is scheduled for a 2008 release.
I'll try not to look too much into this but you can't play Frank Castle mowing down mobsters on eggshells...
I may be wrong but Punisher wouldn't be that much of an influence on bullied kids that had it in mind to do in kind anyway? ?:)
He's gotta play him hardcore. I do realize that there are a few fragile minds out there who may get the added incentive from watching this perhaps...

I have total faith in Ray Stevenson. He's toeing a line in his e-mail, but I'm confident that his Frank Castle won't bother about eggshells underfoot :v
Might as well say: "I wouldn't want kids to come away from Rome thinking it would be okay to murder Cicero, the most articulate politician of his time---in cold blood---and nail his severed hands to the doors of the Roman Senate..." B-) Those so impressionable have no business anywhere such subject matter...
Rather, I expect that (like Jane's Castle), he'll be given plenty of opportunity to show just how unpleasant---and painful---Frank Castle's existence can be...
[Provided P2 is an 'R'-rated picture, of course...if they begin to dilute it into a pseudo-teen-friendly 'PG-13,' I'll be appropriately alarmed |) ]

I think I get what he's trying to say: the Punisher is not a role model. He's a badass and he gets the bad guy; but in spite of that he's not a particularly pleasant person or someone you'd want to hang around with or get to know too well. Thomas Jane hinted at some of those qualities in the first movie, and I think Stevenson just wants to take it to the next level.
I think I could back Ryan Reynolds as the Flash---looks-wise, anyway...I don't think I've seen him in anything post 'Van Wilder' ;% ...but I love this character, and I'd love to see him get some big-screen respect B-)
Ryan Reynolds sounds like the perfect casting choice for Wally West; he's really good at playing sharp-tongued, wise-cracking characters. He justs needs to tone down the profanity and I think it could be an inspired piece of casting.

Yeah, I love the Stevenson choice too. I think he's got the look for grizzled Castle. I would hope that the score for the new installment is similiar to the '89 version and not the depressing tone of '04. Not that it was bad, just too moody.
Pathetic thing is, some people I know, hear at work, want him to don the black costume and white gloves/boots...
As for the JLA project, this thing gets anymore steam with a credible director behind it, will this force Singer's hands on M.O.S.? I just can't see Warner backing two huge projects such as these within the same timeframe involving the same character...

I'm still not convinced that this JLA movie is really imminent or really necessary right now; it smacks of somebody at WB saying "If Fox made all that money with X-Men, then why can't we do Justice League?". If that's their motivation then they're off to a bad start.
Last I heard the Flash movie was still in pre-production, Singer seems dead set on getting S:TMOS up and running and I just can't see why WB would want to disrupt B:TDK in any way by going ahead and greenlighting another movie with Batman in it at this time. All it does is create bad blood within the studio and potentially cannibalize their own product.
The reasonable thing to do would be to wait until next year and see how all these other projects that are already in various stages of development pan out. See where they go with Flash, or how Singer's script turns out (not to mention what they do with Captain Marvel) and then plot out your direction. Then again, this is WB we're talking about; they did unleash Steel, Batman & Robin and Catwoman on us so anything is possible.

Bale on Justice League, Foster on X-Men
Source: Heather Newgen August 21, 2007
At the press day for 3:10 to Yuma in Los Angeles today, Superhero Hype! asked Christian Bale if he is signed to play Batman in the proposed Justice League of America movie at Warner Bros. Bale, who plays Batman again in The Dark Knight, said he is not, and we don't really expect him to. He'll probably stick with his current franchise with director Christopher Nolan.
We also chatted with Ben Foster, who played Angel in X-Men: The Last Stand, and asked him if his character will ever come back in any of the "X-Men" spinoffs.
"I don't know," he said, "I think it's a very expensive movie to make now with all of the celebrities."
But would he like to come back? "If it's a good script and the director knows what he's doing, sure."

That's pretty much what I expected. Bale is going to be loyal to Nolan (just as Keaton was loyal to Burton) and that is at the heart of why I don't think a JLA movie will happen until WB knows for sure how B:TDK performs at the box office.
Having a JLA movie without Batman would probably get the fanboys up in arms to no end and it automatically gives the JLA movie a less prestigious feel. Giving him a cameo would be a cop-out and I doubt Bale would even agree to that. Having a JLA movie in production with a different actor as Batman, even as TDK is about to premiere, would probably foster all kinds of unnecessary comparisons and if TDK is a hit, it will automatically put any other actor playing Batman in a bad light and under a microscope - a bad situation all around.
WB is in trouble no matter what they do, so the best thing to do is wait.

I like what Stevenson is saying because he honestly sounds like he's taking this role very seriously.I don't see that he's saying anything that suggests that his Punisher will be any less the bitter, angry, conflicted and ultimately lonely character than it was when Thomas Jane and Dolph Lundgren played him.
This'll be a dark character(and not because that's fashionable) who has no place being anyone's role model.I applaud that interpretation.

There is one particular scene that I would love to see Stevenson's Punisher do:
Lou Gossett: "You're sick you know that don't you?"
Dolph Lundgren responded with Oscar worthy turn and pause to murmur: ..."No I'm not..."
Gossett:"Then what the **** do you call a 125 murders in 5 years?"
Lundgren: "...A work in progress..."
Gossett then proceeds to pummel Lundgren and scream: "LET ME IN! LET ME IN! THEY WERE MY ****IN' FAMILY TOO! LET ME IN!"
) ) ) ) It's still an awesome movie to me but that part cracks me up everytime!

It will be interesting to see how the character is handled. Will they go the Xena/Hercules mode and have him speak colloquial English. Or will he be Kirby's Thor spewing "By Odin's beard!" and "Verily!" Personally, I'd like to see the latter.
Here's a link to the entire article, have a read:

{[] If they do indeed get Miller that would be a major boost. Interesting to note that one of the screenwriters appears to be Kieran Mulroney, (I'm assuming Kiernan is a mis-spelling). If he can write something as witty as a movie he once starred in called Life Among the Cannibals then this should be something. But do you think Christian Bale will be involved? I know Routh will play Superman, because let's face it he won't be doing anything else.
Hell yeah...me if Singer has his way. X-(
Well, to me, Stewart's not that bad and I'm an old school guy who automatically associates the GLs with Hal Jordan.

Don't think I haven't forgotten that. Then again, John Stewart got knocked out by everyone in the JLA shows. Wimp. :v

"I am not an entrant in the Shakespeare Stakes." - Ian Fleming
"Screw 'em." - Daniel Craig, The Best James Bond EverTM
I think I get what he's trying to say: the Punisher is not a role model. He's a badass and he gets the bad guy; but in spite of that he's not a particularly pleasant person or someone you'd want to hang around with or get to know too well. Thomas Jane hinted at some of those qualities in the first movie, and I think Stevenson just wants to take it to the next level.
Ryan Reynolds sounds like the perfect casting choice for Wally West; he's really good at playing sharp-tongued, wise-cracking characters. He justs needs to tone down the profanity and I think it could be an inspired piece of casting.
B-) I like this guy.
Batman: "The Hammer Of Justice is UNISEX!"
-Batman: The Brave & The Bold -
Your fanboy co-workers again, Rogue? Those guys really need to get out more.
You got it. )
Not too surprised on this but here it is...
Batman: "The Hammer Of Justice is UNISEX!"
-Batman: The Brave & The Bold -
That's pretty much what I expected.
That and the rhyming whino. )
That's a running joke with me and my son.
