And here's some more info on what David Goyer is up to with Magneto and his Green Arrow Supermax project (I thought this one was dead, but no such luck).

    http://movies.ign.com/articles/816/816620p1.html

After careful and extensive thought, is a Magneto movie even necessary? I mean personally, I'm a little OD'ed on the guy from the X-Men movies and I was never a fan of Sir McKellan's costume at all though more comtemporary it might've been. A very talented actor he is but I don't think that it will be enough to drawn people into theatres.

It's sort of "old hat" with a character like Mags and Goyer running the show only leaves one bracing firmly on the toilet rim... 8-)

I hate that I'm even saying this but I hope that SUPERMAX never gets off of the ground. I feel it's a mistake to approach this in the manner they are envisioning...

Much as I respect Sir Ian's acting talent, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in seeing any movie about Magneto.

Of course, maybe if Magneto's powers were permanently removed, and he was tossed into prison and then teamed up with a bunch of low rent supervillains and lead their escape...Just call it SUPERDUPERMAX.

Okay, guys. I must have been slipping because I didn't know that there was a JLA tv pilot back in the 90s. Looking at the footage, I'm almost ashamed to be a DC guy... ;%

Okay... this G.L. is Guy Gardner but it's plain to see that he looks alot more like Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner... :s

As if the Watchtower doesn't have an abundant supply of Slim-Fast in the commisary. Please tell me that's a goiter on J'onn... :o

Thank goodness Supes and Batman weren't added to this and I'm glad that this passed me by.

J'onn's beer belly is pretty horrific. . .and what's up with the Flash's costume? With that Mardi Gras mask and the belt around his hips he looks like he's about to participate in Central City's 12th annual Gay Pride parade.

The JLA pilot itself never aired on TV but the manager of a comics shop I used to frequent had a videotape of it and I actually sat thru it once.

In classic TV fashion, the producers completely changed the characters around. The JLA were all played as awkward outcasts from society; freaks who found each other and thus a place where they could fit in. Guy Gardner didn't just look like Kyle Rayner, he was given a bunch of Rayner-esque work and relationship problems and basically turned into a wimp. The Flash has the most hideous mask this side of Halloween. And the Atom was played by the homliest looking guy I've ever seen in my life. David Ogden Stiers was absolutely embarrassing as Martian Manhunter - eat a salad dude - luckily you only see him for about 3 minutes.

As I recall, Ice - who kept doubting her powers for the whole show - ended up saving the day by freezing a tidal wave created by the Weather Wizard (Mel Ferrer).

As if the actual story wasn't bad enough, the show was also peppered with "interviews" in which the characters talked about themselves and their powers. I guess that's how the writers wanted to familiarize the audience with who they were.

Some of the FX were almost passable but the thing was obviously shot on a shoestring. It's a blessing most of the known universe has never seen it. Of course, I won't rule out the possibility of WB outdoing this when their new, improved JLA movie debuts.

Wow. As if 1994's FF movie wasn't cheesy enough. :s

Maybe I did see this atrocity of an attempt but I was perhaps Men In Black'ed afterwards. I'd gladly like not want to recall seeing this. 8-)

Speaking as one of the "Old Timers",I remember this program. And no--it wasn't exactly a masterpiece.

As noted,TV producers were often uncertain about and uncomfortable with comic book characters so they generally tended to play them for laughs. The exceptions to this "rule" were very rare indeed...

Ah, thanks for the explanation, Tony. I YouTube'd some of JLA clips, and I was wondering why the heroes were changing into their street clothes in a back alley. As for Martian Manhunter--I guess Ogden Stiers was chosen for the same reasons Kelsey Grammer was tabbed for Beast: his distinguished voice and dignified presence. But, sheesh, at least Grammer could conceal his flabby paunch under a lot of blue fur--poor Ogden Stiers literally lets it all hang out. Either that, or the producers got confused and thought J'onn J'onzz was known as the Martian ManEATER.

. . .And that Challenge of the Superheroes--I really, truly don't remember this, though, as a certified superhero freak in 1978, I HAD to have wanted to see it, if I didn't actually see it. Actually, for what it is--a lighthearted romp for the kids with some jokes the grown-ups might appreciate--it doesn't look too bad. Hey, at least they got the costumes mostly right, and Howie Morris darn well looks like Sivana. And it has Frank Gorshin as the Riddler! Give it some love, people!

This one's a bit more recent, circa 2002. Birds of Prey. It's not that bad, but it's not that great either. Batman only appears briefly in flashback. I'm not sure if he turns up later in the season. They only managed 13 episodes, so I guess it got cancelled pretty quickly.

Unfortunately, I remember this one all too well. When I read about the show in TV Guide I was excited beyond words. In fact, I had a terrible toothache that night and was in agony but I still stayed up to watch the show. As soon as I heard the laugh track, I knew it was doomed. I should have gone to bed.

Believe it or not, they actually made a follow-up show; a superhero / supervillain celebrity roast hosted by Ed McMahon. No, I'm not making this up, and in case anyone doubts my good word, here's a YouTube clip. Behold GhettoMan....

Ah, the '70s. . .can you imagine the outcry now if a prime-time show featured a comedian calling himself Ghetto Man? As it is, Carlos Mencia has to do his racially-charged comedy on late-night basic cable--and he takes tons of flak.

Oh, I used to watch Birds of Prey, and I didn't think it was bad. Maybe the babe factor helped.

Ugh. That was brutal and I don't mean in a good way... :))

I remember asking myself why was the laugh track going? I thought that it was supposed to have been a serious affair somewhat. I too was disappointed. :(

Speaking of GhettoMan, one of my favorite skits is the one from Saturday Night Live in which the cast re-enacts Superman's funeral. Of course this was during the time that DC duped most of us into buying that particular story arc; I was one of the duped ;% .
I mean you had Reed Richards in attendance, Wonder Woman, etc. All of a sudden, Sinbad crashes the event dressed in full 70s mode as Black Lightning - afro, costume and all. No one remembers him as he's trying to recollect his past adventures for the heroes. :))

What a slap in the face to Black Lightning creator Tony Isabella. As if the Superfriends cartoon replacing BL with Black Vulcan wasn't enough because Warner/DC didn't want to pay the man creator royalties...

    BL3-thumb.jpg

Even worse, BL's nemesis back in the 70s, the Kingpin-like albino Tobias, was later named Mandrigora as I've seen lately on the JLU cartoons. That's more insult to injury.

That had to be one heck of a fallout between DC & Isabella... ?:)

SpectreIsland and I picked up the Ghost Rider movie today on DVD and I must say, Nicholas Cage's bizarre Elvis lapses notwithstanding, we really enjoyed it. The look of the Ghost Rider was very very well done and both the plot and acting performances were solid all around, especially the always entertaining Sam Elliott. The film was also very well paced with a good balance of action and humor and full of really memorable and evocative images such as the Ghost Rider driving up the skyscraper and Johnny and Slade riding their flaming mounts to San Breganza. I went in with very low expectations but was very pleasantly surprised. Given my tastes, this was a much more fun movie to watch than a lot of other comics films ... cough ... Spiderman ... cough.

Tony, I saw this post...and I tried to fight the urge on responding...but I just...couldn't ...contain myself anymore...

    cussing.gif

Mark Steven Johnson has to be the Uwe Boll of comic book directors. It staggers me how this man gets work regularly...

Ghost Rider wasn't a complete travesty and I recall going into the theatre with low expectations but still this movie was bad. And believe me, I tried to love it.
Cosmetically, GH looked very cool but the plot wasn't taken very seriously to me, diluted villians from an old Billy Idol video (that weren't very difficult to defeat mind you) and a weak climax. Of course, this was the man who brought the mediocre Daredevil (the costume is just unforgivable) movie so that's what I get for falling for that trick again. Shame on me...

The man just takes great source material and doesn't seem to be able to bringing it to its full potential.

The only part that I will admit to loving was that really cool lasso-effect Ghost Rider did off of the top of the building. That was beautiful...the rest...meh. 8-)

But I am truly glad that you guys liked it. All joking aside, that's all that matters. Johnson just isn't my type of director when it comes to comic books.

Hey Rogue, does this mean you liked Superman Returns more than Ghost Rider? {:) I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, although my brother does have steam coming out of his head after reading your thoughts. :))

I do think you're being a little unfair though. You can't forgive Daredevil for the horrible costume, yet you love Batman Begins and are willing to give The Dark Knight a free pass even though Batman's costume in both movies just plain sucks and looks nothing like his comics version. And none of the villains in Nolan's Batmovies look like their comics counterparts - even their abilities are changed in some cases, there was no mention at all of Raas Al Guul's immortality or the Lazarus Pits in BB and Joker doesn't even look to have real bleached skin in TDK. Say what you want about Johnson but at least he isn't embarrassed to stay close to the look of the comics in his movies. I admit that Ghost Rider did dispatch most of his enemies pretty quickly, but I really preferred that to those endless confrontations from the Spiderman movies that dragged on and on and were horribly paced.

Anyhow, different strokes for different folks. We'll chalk it up to your preference for DC, something we can totally understand as we're hopeless fanboys ourselves.

BTW, my brother thinks he has a spare Daredevil Costume Card. If he does have it, it's in the mail buddy. Enjoy ;)

I was still emotionally scarred from Batman & Robin when this came out, so I was really hard on it and savaged it mercilessly. I really hated those flashback scenes with Batman - everybody is flopping their capes around and it looks like something out of a transvestite stage production. I also never bought the premise - Batman balls Catwoman, they have a child, Catwoman dies, and Batman leaves Gotham never to be heard from again. Yeah, right. I also hated that tiger sound that played whenever Huntress or her lackey appeared. Bearing all that in mind, this one was gimped from the getgo for me and I remember cheering loudly when it was quickly yanked.

    :)) Tell Spec sure. Thanks.

No, I'm not a fan of the any of the Batman costumes really. Never have been with all of the black body armor and stiffness as he moves. I would prefer to step out on disbelief and have him don what he has on in the comics and be happy.

I love Begins because Nolan finally brought respect back to the character after the previous dismal outing. I can't make excuses, I'm a big Bats fan and there are certain things from time to time I'm willing to overlook. Some things I just can't. I hated Begins cowl with a passion though.

But DD's Mrs. Peel get-up was just hard too swallow for me. I just felt that they should've stayed closer to the comics version. I may be of the minority but I really loved the yellow & crimson one.

It's just that Ghost Rider had no business having that much humor and light moments to it. I know why they did it that way; to dilute it for younger audiences. But I'm glad that you agree that the bad guys had no presence at all and were done away with way too quickly.

I like Peter Fonda but he made even Satan look like a decrepit old has-been...

And BTW, paying admission to see Ghost Rider 5 times in a row is better than paying once to tolerate Superman Returns. That I stand by...until something worse comes along. ;)

I think that's beyond the scope of the hardware. :)) Although I am curious to see how it looks as everybody says BB is a great transfer and one of THE reference discs for the sampling the HD format.

BTW, bad news, my brother only has a spare Mark Steven Johnson autograph card, not the costume card. We'll send it out (along with a few other odds and ends) on Tuesday.

Just as an FYI, the Adam West pic was signed in person by West right in front of us; we actually met him at a sci-fi convention in Boston many many years ago and accosted him as he was trying to get some lunch. West was his usual cool self and man was he tall.

My brother is an avid card collector too (he's on a NASA autograph card kick right now) and in his zeal to get his hands on stuff, he often buys from multiple sources and ends up getting doubles.

Also, just out of curiosity, did you ever see the extended cut of Daredevil? It added a lot of new footage to the film including the dropped subplot with Coolio (which showed Murdock's and Foggy's legal skills) and the fights with both Bullseye and Kingpin were much longer. The added scenes pushed the Electra relationship into the background a bit but most people who've seen both versions say the extended cut is more satisfying - somthing Spectre and I concur with.

And check out what our own Mantis has in his collection ...

{[] I love it. Of course I've heard nightmares about West and Shatner from guys that frequent those events. Glad you guys received a different more positive response.

My son caught it on FX like last month and said that the stretched out version was considerably more entertaing than what we saw in the theatre.

You have a bright lad there Rogue; I'm glad somebody in your family is willing to give things a second chance every now and then. ;)

All this talk about bad superhero costumes, and look what pops up on one of my news links. Here's a couple of fanboys from this weekend's Dragon Con in Atlanta. I think they need to hit the gym...

Dude, you just made my son gag on his pizza! I wasn't ready to show him that. :))

The Atom resembles one of my Marvel fanboy co-workers but he wouldn't be caught dead in something like that...

Well....I guess this thing won't go away as negatively as I had begun to feel it would...

    Justice League Begins Casting?
    Source: Will September 2, 2007

According to Obsessed With Film, casting directors are now listed at Showfax in New York, Toronto and Vancouver for Warner Bros.' live-action Justice League of America adaptation, which George Miller (Happy Feet) is expected to direct.

The roles listed with the casting calls do not specify which characters they are in the film. Reports have said that the superhero team-up movie would include Batman, Superman, The Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern. Christian Bale (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) and Brandon Routh (Superman, Superman: Man of Steel) are not involved.

Warner Bros. has yet to make an official announcement about George Miller's attachment or any casting info.

This sounds like it might be good--I certainly hope so.Maybe it's only talk. But it'd be fun to see the JLA on the big screen (avoiding camp and the pretension of being "real").Of course,it'll need a really good storyline and a talented director. And an cast who strongly resemble the characters they play.Casting relative unknowns in the roles makes more sense to me than hiring big names and then reconforming the characters in order to make the actors seem suitable in their roles. Also, this'd save money and help promote the characters over the actors.I think that's a good idea because the JLA is the real star. The characters should be more important than the people playing them.

Anyway,as it is-if this film's made-there's bound to be a few characters who won't get to say or do much(like some of those mutants in the third X-Men film).

This isn't a World's Finest movie,so hopefully it won't be entirely dependent on the involvement of Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman to the exclusion of any other characters--although WB will still probably be tempted to promote them more than the other heroes.

Whatever,I won't be a bit upset upset if Bale and Routh aren't involved in this movie. In all fairness, there are probably plenty of other talented actors who look like and can play Batman and Superman as well--if not better--than Bale and Routh have. And I suspect that there are also plenty of beautiful and talented young women who'll not only look right as Wonder Woman, but will also be able to play her with the right balance of authority and femininity required for the role.

I suggest a wait-and-see approach.I'm as suspicious as anyone when it comes to comic book movies and how the source material is treated. That said,if a JLA movie is handled intelligently(and is NOT a camp fest),this just might be an exceptional motion picture that'll at least be as good-if not superior to-the first two X-Men flicks.

Son Of Barbel and I just watched the Tim Burton Batman again. He's working his way through a large pile of Batman comics and took the notion to watch this again. It was still OK but we both prefer Batman Begins since it concentrates more on Bruce himself.

What I like best about Burton's Batman was seeing Jack Palance offer such juicy tidbits like; "You're my number one guy!" He could do no wrong in my book. :)

There are some really funny bits about Palance on the audio commentary to the remastered Batman movie. Apparently, Burton was very intimidated by the actor and Palance took advantage of it.

Personally, I enjoy the 1966 movie with Adam west, 1989 movie and Batman Begins equally. I find they complement each other very well because they offer opposing but equally entertaining interpretations of the character. The 1966 movie is the height of camp with a wickedly funny script, bright colors, hammy villains and the squarest Batman ever; in other words, a perfect representation of the book at that time. The 1989 movie is full of wild gadgets that defy logic, has a very unique look that just drips gothic, and is in many ways a satire. BB on the other hand plays it straight and gives us a "serious" take on the material with very down to earth villains. It's fun to watch all three back to back and compare and contrast where the character was and the world he inhabited at each of those moments in time.

Well, I've yet to catch BB, (somebody get the chest clamps and revive Rogue), since I'm only a casual Batman fan.

Whew, thank goodness we're on the next page fellows. Those last pictures were disturbing, (and we quoted them thrice!) ;)
