The problem with The Phantom & The Shadow(which are two of my favorite genre films) was what I'd like to believe was marketing and the familiarity issue. I don't remember what critics had to say about both off hand.
I went to see both of these movies and remember the theatres being slim-pickings unfortunately.
We are agreeing to much; this is scary ) But you're right; there was no marketing for these films at all and the Phantom is not well known in this country. When you mention Phantom to the layman, they think you're talking about Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom was very popular in Italy when I was growing up. In Italy he was called L'uomo Mascherato (The masked man) and his costume was red not purple. I was shocked when Paramount announced they were making a major motion picture. Outside of the poster art on billboards and some magazine adds, it got no buzz whatsoever. Same for the Shadow. I don't remember any promotion for this film either even though both films are faithful adaptations of the source material.
"I like it when your big brother tries to talk tough about comic book casting...it makes me laugh. If Matrix were here, he'd laugh too..."
)
) Thanks for reminding me of one of the all-time great pure action films.

It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman

I quite enjoyed Shadow, but I loved Phantom. I still can't believe that there's not going to be a Phantom sequel.

Dan, The Phantom is just as big in Australia as it is in Italy. I too wish for continuing adventures of The Ghost Who Walks. {[]

According to CHUD.com, someone has gotten their hands on the proposed JLA script and has posted some rumors. Here's the link, read at your own discretion and with as many doses of salt as you deem appropriate:
I've heard similar rumors in the past about the plot so either this guy is just regurgitating those stories again or it is the genuine article. What do I think of this proposed storyline if it is true? Let me choose my words carefully: I think it sucks!! (other than the part about Aquaman being a "poofta" (their wording, not mine); they're right on the money about that).
Anyhow, despite what I read in this article, Green Lantern better be Hal Jordan...
unless they actually do kill him off, then they're more than welcome to use John Stewart.

My father was a big fan of the Phantom as a kid, and once belonged to the Phantom fan club. I've never read the comics (although I do own a Phantom book) but I love superhero films and Phantom film did not disappoint me at all. It's a film which I always watch whenever it's on TV as I think it's great fun.
BTW, thanks Rogue and Tony for bringing in Arnie and brightening up this thread.

Until everything is verified,it might be best to still treat this as a rumor. One thing that does sound good to me-from this rumor- is that the JLA will already exist when this film begins, rather than take up an hour's time to form onscreen prior to whatever the storyline might be.At least it does sound as if the screenwriters actually glanced at a JLA comic book or two rather than just attempt to come up with something out of thin air.Another thing I like is the apparent candidate for Wonder Woman.
Why the DC filmmakers don't approach Paul Dini or Bruce Timm to help with some of their screenplays(if only for a general outline and list of potential characters),still surprises me.Oh,wait--Dini/Timm don't count because they work in animation, and everybody knows that cartoons aren't important because everybody knows that they aren't as "real" as live-action,especially when it comes to superheroes.
Rant over.
Then again,if the filmmakers used something like The Magnificent Seven as a template for their first film--without any of the superheroes dying in the end--showing the formation of the JLA might be kind of interesting. As for Aquaman being a poofter?Jeez...I dunno--I've never held Namor in particularly high regard.Much too ridiculous for my tastes.

) Green chainmail underwear and that's all. Much too weird for me and I've always felt that way about Namor. I don't want to see that all out and stuff and they're talking about possibly casting him in the next FF movie if it's a go. All this chainmail and its ambiguous meanings...
Aquaman...Namor...Bennett.
I know I shouldn't presume too much into this so early on but what Tony posted of the rumour that it might be CGI-animated ala that Christmas train film (Polar Express) from a couple years back, why would they take that approach (WORST CASE SCENARIO IMO) if it comes down to it? I mean Warner seems to be frantically searching for an all-star cast, doesn't that come across as a little puzzling?
I'll admit that I'm not terribly up on this procedure so it would be the equivelant of some videogame cutscenes? They still would look like cartoons IMO. ?:)
That's one tidbit of info I wish doesn't come true. Otherwise, just make it straight out animation. I want live-action for this project.

Your soldiers are nothing; SpectreIsland and I could kill every single one of them ... SNAP ... in the blink of an eye. Remember that.
Much to my shock, amazement, disbelief and downright joy, Fox just released a Director's Cut to Commando (I know, I know, I didn't think this movie had a director either). Included in the special features section are deleted scenes and alternate takes, including unused variations on the "Let off some steam" line. This one's as good as bought.
As for the JLA, I think the notion of having the team already together isn't that great of an idea; it's bound to lead to confusion on the part of the general audience who don't know who half these characters are. I'd prefer each character getting a little scene at the start to show their powers as they protect their respective cities before banding together to combat a common threat.
I also wish WB would just announce something concrete about this movie. Telling us whether it will be live action or CGI wouldn't hurt it, at least I don't think so.
As for Aquaman and Namor, the less said the better.
EDIT: Almost forgot, Green Lantern better be Hal Jordan...
Victoria Hill Tests for Justice League
Source: Moviehole September 23, 2007
Moviehole is reporting that Aussie actress Victoria Hill auditioned for the role of Wonder Woman in Warner Bros. big screen Justice League of America adaptation:
The starlet, currently seen in the Village Roadshow release "December Boys," has tested for the role of Wonder Woman.
Now that doesn't mean she's in the running or a contender – you'd have to be a fly on the wall in the casting director's office to get wind of how she went, obviously – but she did read for the Amazonian princess.
Potential, guys?
I saw her in Macbeth. It's not much of a movie I'm afraid. It's all style and no sense. She made a very shrill Lady Macbeth, opposite Sam Worthington, (who incidentally tested for Bond alongside Craig). She might fare better as an Amazonian princess though.

If nothing else she'd probably be more affordable than Jessica Biel who the studio is trying to woo into this film. I can't seem to find any decent full body shots of her though...
I mean not every woman can "fill" out WW's costume the right way.

On Lexi Alexander's site, it's been revised to reveal that T.J. Storm will play the part of Maginty the black-Irish gangster from The Punisher MAX series.
That was an awesome story arc and if Storm nails the personna of the character the right way, this may be one of the better comic movies of '08. Maginty was ruthless & crazy in the comics; here's hoping Lexi doesn't drop the ball on this... B-)

Entertainment Weekly has learned that Jessica Biel has decided to pass on playing Wonder Woman in Warner Bros.' live-action Justice League. The former "7th Heaven" star had been in early talks to play the Amazonian princess.
George Miller (Happy Feet) will direct the big screen adaptation. Kieran and Michele Mulroney wrote the script.

More JLA news. And in Tony's case, it doesn't look like they're going to have Jordan in this as an integral member at least... Sorry, man.
The only other thing worse than a wrestler being cast for acting roles this important would be a rapper. Here's a excerpt from an article posted today of who read for the part of John Stewart:
In brightest day, in darkest night, No evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!
Months ago we were told studio execs were looking for a young hip actor that would cater to the urban demographic, a Tyrese Gibson or Common-type (I don’t know if either of these guys ever read or were contacted for this film). But I do know that Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. aka T.I. (American Gangster, A.T.L) has recently read for the role of Green Lantern/John Stewart. All I know is that he read for the part, I don't know how he did or if they are seriously considering him after the audition, but, he could be in the running.
Not to sure how I feel about T.I. as John Stewart, can he pull it off if chosen? One of the coolest heroes ever? He certainly has the look. Compare his photo to the Justice League Unlimited version of Stewart below.
Wouldn't this be considered as insulting that they would leapfrog or look past very credible black actors (Chiwetel Ejiofor comes to mind...heck even Will Smith) if they were looking to reach a certain demographic? I hope that he doesn't get it because Warner Bros. could choose someone far, far better.
Why do I get the feeling that this JLA movie is in real danger of becoming a laughingstock in Hollywood. Between the complete lack of interest of Christian Bale (and apparently Brandon Routh), the studio's inability to get even one star onboard, and zero PR from WB thus far, this one already looks to be a disaster to me.
As for John Stewart being GL, and possibly being played by a rapper no less, there's only one thing I can say...
I just saw today's episode of The Batman featuring a team-up between Batman & Superman (it's their first meeting in this show) as they take on Lex Luthor and some of Gotham's rogues gallery. Man, what a great great story, really fun and well written. The characters all act as you would expect them to and the story really takes advantage of their respective strengths (and weaknesses).
If the brainless monkeys at WB would just let the creative team behind one of these animated shows take a crack at a live action script, they'd have a guaranteed hit on their hands. Too bad it'll never happen.

BOW TO THE AWESOMENESS OF THE BAT! B-)
I just saw this and I echo your comments 100%. I am loving this cartoon more and more. What I'm glad that WB did was mix the old with the new; it was great to hear the voices of Clancy Brown and George Newbern again (although I love Tim Daly's more) and this Robin version has the coolness of a Tim Drake more than Dick Grayson ever was even though he's the latter.
Green Arrow's on next week's ep! Yes! Warner, please get a clue and use what works for you. I'm pretty sure that the powers-that-be can convey the animated material to live action.
I'm still a little peeved with the Legion cartoon...NO MON-EL! X-(

Another day, another JLA movie story courtesy of IGN. According to this one, the film has not been green-lit and if there is a writer's strike at the end of October (as many fear) it may kill the film entirely.
I particularly found this passage amusing and enlightening as to just how clueless these WB suits (and apparently George Miller) really are to their own franchises:
Meanwhile, a source for JusticeLeague-on-Film.com claims that Warners and director George Miller "are having a hard time casting Batman. ... Actors that are considered a 'name' don't want to step on their [Chris Nolan, Christian Bale] toes. That's a big problem for Miller and Warners because you have a character [Batman] with its own franchise and it's successful -- and everyone loves what Bale is doing as Batman. I mean, Bale IS Batman. Do you think someone like a Jake Gyllenhaal wants to try to compete with Bale?"
All I can say to that is ... Well duh! Did they actually think this wouldn't happen?

LatinoReview.com has posted supposed story details on the upcoming INCREDIBLE HULK movie. Warning: Lots of spoilers so read at your own peril...
Just in case they take it offline, I'll paste it:
The Incredible Hulk Story Details
Date: October 2, 2007
By: Kellvin Chavez
Source: Clutch
Latino Review has done it again! The superspy that gave us some of our biggest scoops (George Miller directing JLA and Heath Ledger as The Joker), has read Ed Norton's first draft of THE INCREDIBLE HULK!
We are going to call our spy CLUTCH well because he is so clutch in these situations!
Be warned that there be spoilers ahead!
Here is what we’ve been told about THE INCREDIBLE HULK movie:
The Arctic. A MAN wearing disembarks from a tug boat and heads off into the remote wilderness. As he wanders through the ice, memories flash: a woman on the ground, flames – fuzzy and fleeting. At last he stops and removes his parka revealing a gun at his waist. His heart races as takes it in his hands and pulls the hammer back. A slight GREEN envelopes him.
A gunshot. The man falls forward, but his arms rush out to catch him: huge, muscled, green arms. The hands reach up the man’s head and come down, holding a bullet, totally flattened. We pull back and a roar echoes through the arctic wilderness.
Five years later. Brazil. BRUCE BANNER runs through the slums of Porto Verde, a pulse monitor keeping careful track of his heart rate, making sure he doesn’t get too excited. He drops by a shop to pick up a package – inside is a book on rare South American flowers. At a computer terminal, he sends a message to MR. BLUE thanking him for the book and explaining that he still has to find the flower – Bruce signs it MR. GREEN.
A few days later, Bruce enters a primitive bottling plant, putting on gloves and glasses like the rest of the Brazilian laborers around him. During beak time, Bruce talks to a supply driver who hands him a package with a leaf in it. Excited, Bruce checks his now-worn flower book and smiles.
Later, Bruce helps the factory owner repair a machine. He cuts himself, a few drops of blood landing on the bottle conveyer belt. Bruce quickly cleans it up, but misses a drop that landed in a bottle…
At his no-frills apartment, Bruce chats online with Mr. Blue. Blue asks Bruce if he has the notes on how to make the inhibitor and he replies that he does. Bruce then gets to work, using the few scientific implements he has. Hopeful, Bruce tests the purple liquid he got from the flowers on his own blood – but no change. He tells Blue it didn’t work; Blue suggests a stronger but potentially lethal dose, but Bruce replies that he doesn’t have any more. Blue then tells Bruce send him a sample of his blood. Bruce is hesitant… but decides it is his only option. He stares sadly at a picture of a beautiful woman, his wife, BETTY ROSS.
A few weeks later, in America, a woman prepares lunch for a group of children. The mother sips from a bottle – a moment later she spasms and falls to the ground, eyes rolling into the back of her head.
Later, at the office of GENERAL THUNDERBOLT ROSS, MAJOR CABOT reports that a woman got gamma sickness from a South American soda. Ross is intrigued by this. Cabot reports that it was bottled in Porto Verde, Brazil. Ross tells Cabot to get things ready – they’ve found him.
Ross watches his team prepare. They have photos of the area: the factory, Bruce’s apartment, etc. Cabot briefs the soldiers, a man named BLONKSKY leading point. She tells them that that Banner is a U.S. fugitive who stole military secrets and that they shouldn’t engage him.
Back at the bottling plant, some young RUFFIANS bother a pretty girl. Bruce does his best to ignore it, but at last steps up to defend her. The LEADER takes swings at Bruce, but he artfully dodges them. They leave, telling Bruce they’ll get him later.
At his apartment, Blue tells Bruce that there was success with a higher concentration. Bruce’s face shows hope, something he’s been waiting to hear for a long time. Bruce warns that his situation may be more complicated, but Blue seems confident that there’s a good chance it could cure him. He writes on a pad of paper: DATA FROM MAYNARD and sticks it in his pocket. Bruce packs up everything and sticks it in his pack for a quick escape, his nightly routine - just in case.
Ross’ team sneaks into area and breaks into the apartment. They attack Bruce in bed – but it’s a decoy. Bruce escapes and a chase ensues through the winding slums. Bruce makes his way to a bar near the factory, but runs smack into the punks from work. They chase after him into the factory while the soldiers also close in. Cornered, Bruce is beaten by the punks and, in cover of dark, he transforms into THE HULK.
The Hulk easily defeats the punks and soldiers and retreats into the jungle. Blonsky stares after him, in awe of the figure’s staggering size and strength.
Bruce makes his way north anyway he can. At last he crosses the border and hops a train, heading somewhere.
Ross and Blonsky meet with GENERAL GRELLER, his friend who helped him put together the South American job. Greller tries to wrap his head around what happened and tells Ross that something this powerful can’t be on the loose anymore. Afterwards, Blonsky insists he get answers about what happened, but Ross refuses. Blonsky, a decorated soldier, says he lost some friends of his and at last Ross gives in and explains everything.
Ross explains that Banner was part of an early experiment to create super soldier serum, but the funding was running out. In the eleventh hour of the project, Banner was so certain of his research that he tested it on himself – that’s when everything went to hell. Ross tells Blonsky that Banner is a scientist, not a soldier, and that he doesn’t understand that the power he holds belongs to the U.S. and should be used as a weapon. Ross then asks Blonsky if he’d be willing to take a shot of the serum, to have an edge against Banner when they face off again. Blonsky is more than willing.
Bruce goes to the university where Betty works – the same place his accident happened. Bruce sees her – with another man, SAMSON.
Bruce hides out with STAN, an old friend who owns a pizza place. He manages to sneak into his former lab at MAYNARD HALL (from the note) to find his old data, but finds it has all been erased. Later, as he discusses this with Stan, Betty and Samson come in. Betty catches a glimpse of Bruce and chases after him. They are reunited and Bruce agrees to go with her and Samson.
At Betty and Samson’s place, the three chat and Bruce smiles, the first time in a great while. He later talks to Samson, who explains he is a psychiatrist and even though he is sad Betty can’t be totally his, he is happy Bruce is alive. He also says that Betty has refused to talk about anything involving Bruce. Bruce says he hurt Betty and can never forgive himself for what happened, even though he would never let it happen again. Samson is still suspicious.
The next day, Betty goes to take Bruce to the bus station so he can go see Br. Blue, but Ross’ men get to him and a big battle ensues on the college campus. Betty pleads with her father to leave him alone, but Ross refuses to listen. The Hulk faces off against Blonsky, stronger and faster than before, but still no match for Bruce’s alter ego.
Badly wounded, the Hulk escapes with Betty, leaving behind a trail of destruction and a nearly-dead Blonsky. Enraged that the Hulk escaped and that his DAUGHTER is with him, Ross speaks with Samson, saying he did the right thing by calling. Samson wonders if he did, mentioning that the Hulk protected Betty better during the battle than her own father did. Samson informs Ross he won’t help him anymore and Ross storms off.
Blonsky is badly wounded – every bone in his body broken. His doctor says that if Blonsky even survives, he’ll be paralyzed.
Bruce and Betty travel to see Dr. Blue, laying low in cheap motels and rekindling their love. Betty pawns her mother’s necklace for cash – Bruce feels bad but Betty says they’ll get it back someday.
Back at the hospital, Blonsky has made a remarkable recovery – not only has he healed entirely, but he is stronger and healthier than before. Ross gives him more shots and Blonsky smiles, a little too happy with his power.
Bruce and Betty arrive in New York City – Columbia University, the lab of Dr. Blue aka DR. STERNS. Meanwhile, Cabot figures out where the two were headed and warns Ross, who prepares his team for New York. En route, a soldier asks a ripped and muscular Blonsky how he feels – “Like a monster,” he replies.
Sterns attempts to treat Bruce. He is amazed and shocked by Bruce’s transformation as the procedure seemingly malfunctions; at last, Bruce turns back to himself, the treatment outwardly effective.
As the team prepares their assault, Sterns shows Bruce his creations – animals Sterns injected with Bruce’s DNA. Bruce is mad, saying they must all be destroyed lest they fall into the government’s hands. Sterns replies that Bruce is paranoid – just as a sniper shoots Bruce with a dart. Bruce falls and is taken captive, Betty following after.
Ross and his team fly away in a chopper, happy that they’ve finally caught him. But back at the lab, the steroid-filled Blonsky forces Sterns to inject him with Bruce’s DNA.
In the distance, the occupants of the copter notice a huge explosion – something wrong has happened at the lab. A huge, hulking creature is destroying New York – Blonsky has become… an ABOMINATION.
Ross has no way to stop him and he realizes that Bruce may be their only hope, but after Sterns’ treatment, can he even transform? The back door of the copter opens and, high above the city, Bruce jumps, about to find out…
I enjoyed it - Norton did a good job with things. I loved how the first act played everything out - I really appreciate the little details woven in. The action scenes were great - I'm curious how Leterrier will handle them - but I'm sure they'll be entertaining - they have every potential to be and Leterrier was on his game with the Transporter films. I think this is a good set up for the franchise/Avengers movie down the line, at least, better than Ang Lee's was.
Interesting read, but I do not like the fact that they...
changed Hulk's origin by essentially stealing Captain America's origin and using that instead.
...that really takes a lot of the character's tragedy and irony away and makes Banner a more active participant in the Hulk's creation and that is completely, 100% dead wrong.
I also don't care for the way Thunderbolt Ross is handled in this synopsis; he comes across as the typical one dimensional army jock. Sam Elliott's portrayal in Ang Lee's version definitely gave the character a lot more depth, even sympathy and his motives for wanting to contain the Hulk were not so obvious and cliched.

First thing that came to mind about that little snippet was Civil War; the Twilight Zone of comic book story arcs. You're right about that it takes something away from the mythos of the character, Tony and was a downer sort of for me.
As for Ross, I too preferred Elliot's rendition and was a little disappointed that he wasn't asked back. I don't care for how Ross is mapping out in this article.
This bombs and they'll make Ang Lee look like a genius.

Since Marvel seems to be making movies every six months (friggin' Ant-Man's getting a movie?) about their characters, I wish that they would make one of this guy:
One of the best story arcs from a Marvel comic; of course copius amounts of peyote may be needed for some to actually get it. Warlock, under Starlin, was an awesome read. )
Anyone know where I can find the Marvel Two-In-One Annual where Warlock comes back from the dead and gets revenge on Thanos? No luck on Ebay.

I saw Superman: Doomsday last night and I really enjoyed it.
Not your typical Superman affair; I mean the film could be labeled a soft rated "R" for some of its content. It does stray from the source material somewhat but overall one of the better ones...

Anybody check out the Batman/Green Arrow crossover on WB's The Batman today? Another neat little episode with some good action and witty writing. The animation style takes a little getting used to but I'm really liking this season. I really hope they do a JLA or Green Lantern episode.
BTW Rogue, just thought you should know that SpectreIsland and I sold our DVD of Ghost Rider...

The high-def DVD's are finally starting to come down in price so we're going to slowly upgrade some of our collection - primarily the comics adaptations and sci-fi movies that would take advantage of the format. Ghost Rider really benefits from the added color and resolution offered; Nicholas Cage's eyes look even more sunken and Eva Mendez's blouses are even tighter. The CGI Rider and his bike also look great in HD.
We also picked up Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer on BluRay; another title that really takes advantage of the format. You see so much more detail, like the Surfer opening his eyes during the end credits when he's floating in space.

Lol! Why am I not surprised that there was a catch to the GR thing? )
Speaking of GH, do you know that this movie is debuting on Starz this December? Man, that's quick. I remember when you had to wait an entire year to catch this on the tube after its theatrical release.
As for the Batman cartoon today, it was another great ep although I cannot stand how they rendered Green Arrow at all. The animation has that psuedo-manga-ish strained look and I may never fully get used to all of it but it doesn't kill the show.
I wouldn't worry much about Hal showing up; the new season's only 3 shows old thus far. He'll probably show up near the finale I'd guess...

Why do you say these things when you know I will kill you for it? {:)
Dan, The Phantom is just as big in Australia as it is in Italy. I too wish for continuing adventures of The Ghost Who Walks. {[]

"I don't need the gun, Tony...I can beat you...I DON'T NEEED NOOO GUUUHHHNNN!"
You're right, Dan. A classic 80s action flick. One of my favorites. Bennett, although this isn't remotely comic book related made this movie for me.

You're a funny guy Rogue, I like you. That's why I'm going to kill you last. )
http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=news&id=11937
I've heard similar rumors in the past about the plot so either this guy is just regurgitating those stories again or it is the genuine article. What do I think of this proposed storyline if it is true? Let me choose my words carefully: I think it sucks!! (other than the part about Aquaman being a "poofta" (their wording, not mine); they're right on the money about that).
Anyhow, despite what I read in this article, Green Lantern better be Hal Jordan...

And then there are those little wings on Namor's feet. Why?So he can FLY underwater?:v )
And there's that Madame Butterfly-esque origin story...I guess it's hard to come up with a dynamic ocean king, regardless of publisher. Why would that be?Too many critters in the sea?
I saw her in Macbeth. It's not much of a movie I'm afraid. It's all style and no sense. She made a very shrill Lady Macbeth, opposite Sam Worthington, (who incidentally tested for Bond alongside Craig). She might fare better as an Amazonian princess though.

Vernon Wells is awesome.

His creepy but hateful crush on John Matrix is hilarious. "John..." in that Aussie accent is another running joke in my household once I showed COMMANDO to my son; I don't need to tell you what he thought of Bennett once he saw him. )
Isn't it funny that two of America's top ex-soldiers were literally an Austrian & and an Australian? )
If nothing else she'd probably be more affordable than Jessica Biel who the studio is trying to woo into this film. I can't seem to find any decent full body shots of her though...

Jessica Biel Passes on Justice League
Source: Lobo September 28, 2007
Entertainment Weekly has learned that Jessica Biel has decided to pass on playing Wonder Woman in Warner Bros.' live-action Justice League. The former "7th Heaven" star had been in early talks to play the Amazonian princess.
George Miller (Happy Feet) will direct the big screen adaptation. Kieran and Michele Mulroney wrote the script.

There you have it folks.

...that really takes a lot of the character's tragedy and irony away and makes Banner a more active participant in the Hulk's creation and that is completely, 100% dead wrong.
