As for the Batman cartoon today, it was another great ep although I cannot stand how they rendered Green Arrow at all. The animation has that psuedo-manga-ish strained look and I may never fully get used to all of it but it doesn't kill the show.

Yeah, the animation style was my biggest hurdle as well. I'm not wild about the Japanese/Asian influence but I can live with it as it's nowhere near as bad as in other shows like Legion of Superheroes or Teen Titans. It's also interesting how certain characters in The Batman look more "manga-ish" than others.

I've never watched The Batman because I can't stand how they've rendered any of the characters. A Riddler who looks like Marilyn Manson; a Penguin who looks like The Mayor from Nightmare Before Christmas; Bane with big block teeth like he picked up a jumbo set of "Hillbilly teeth" from the novelty aisle. . .and don't even get me started on The Joker. Sorry: I just can't get past it all!

You may want to give it another look HB as they've pulled the art style back a bit this season, at least in the episodes I've seen. There also seems to be a larger emphasis on the DCU than just Batman's rogues gallery.

Another article over at IGN on the proposed JLA movie. Entertainment weekly has obtained an early draft script and the plot does indeed involve Maxwell Lord, the OMACS, and the origin of the League including all the original members.

The EW piece contains some contradictory information as it says Jessica Biel is still in talks to play Wonder Woman while her agent says she is no longer in negotiations. Ironically, EW had previously reported that she was no longer in the running.

Also, it looks like there may not be a stand-alone Wonder Woman film; according to high-ranking WB suit Jeff Robinov, WB will no longer make films with female leads; this policy was apparently triggered by the poor performance of The Invasion and The Brave One. While I also have my doubts on the box-office viability of a WW film (especially with Joel Silver at the helm) I guess it didn't occur to Robinov that maybe the movies failed because they were poor, unimaginative knock-offs of ideas already put to film many times before.

Anyhow, here's the link to the full article:

Well, it appears that Routh isn't waiting around for Singer and WB to get things going again; he still has to eat. I have heard of this comic but never seen an issue. Looks interesting though...

    Brandon Routh is Dylan Dog
Source: Comic Book Resources October 9, 2007

Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) will play the lead role in Dead of Night, which is based on SAF Comics' best-selling horror comic book series "Dylan Dog," created by Tiziano Sclavi and first published in Italy by Sergio Bonelli Editore.

The movie will be directed by David R. Ellis, who started his career as a stuntman and in recent years has directed such movies as Final Destination 2, Cellular and Snakes on a Plane. The screenplay was written by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly.

The "Dylan Dog" movie, which is being produced by Arclight Films in Los Angeles, has a budget of $35 million. Principal photography is planned to start soon on locations in Connecticut.

Dylan Dog's graphic representation was inspired by English actor Rupert Everett. Dylan Dog is a penniless nightmare investigator who defies the whole preceding horror tradition with a vein of surrealism and an anti-bourgeois rhetoric. The true monsters in many of these stories are human beings.

OMG! OMG! OMFG! They are making a Dylan Dog movie! But Brandon Routh? Not right for the role. Dylan is a haunted man, with a lot of darkness. I liked Routh as Superman, but Sclavi has said that Dylan is not so much based on Rupert Everett, but actually is Everett. Now RE is heading towards 50 and is sadly too old for the role. Although he did play the lead in a 94 movie (Dellamorte Dellamore), based on a different character from the Dylan Dog universe, Francesco Dellamorte, a sort of twisted cousin to Dylan. It was sublime. One of my all-time favourite films. But you're looking for an actor who has Everett's looks, his melancholy and his comic timing. I can't see that in Routh. I'm just happy they're making a film. But they better not just use the name, and not adapt what makes DD so special.

This JLA project is just steaming along. The names considered up for parts are freaking babies! He's taking the Smallville route; it appears that Miller wants a youth movement for a lengthy franchise...

That part doesn't set well with me.

Who is Testing for Justice League ?
Source: The Hollywood Reporter October 14, 2007

The Hollywood Reporter says that a slew of young actors are testing for the roles of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and the Martian Manhunter in George Miller's big screen Justice League adaptation. The director is seeing 35-40 actors for roles in the Warner Bros. comic book movie from Sunday through Monday.

Included in the casting sessions are: Adam Brody ("The O.C."), Joseph Cross (Running With Scissors), D.J. Cotrona ("Windfall"), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Grindhouse), Michael Angarano (Sky High), Teresa Palmer (The Grudge 2), Max Thieriot (Jumper) and rapper Common.

The trade adds that the cast of NBC's "Friday Night Lights" is well-represented as well, with Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki and Scott Porter also among those testing for parts.

Miller is reportedly looking for the young actors to grow into their roles over the course of several movies. The director is due to present his findings to the studio midweek.

Sam Raimi on Spider-Man 4 and The Shadow
Source: Ryan Rotten October 16, 2007

Superhero Hype! got a chance to talk to 30 Days of Night producer and "Spider-Man" franchise director Sam Raimi today. He was asked about the status of Spider-Man 4.

"Right now, Sony is meeting with different writers to try and bring a fresh new story and approach to the 'Spider-Man' franchise," Raimi told us, "so I've been in meetings with Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, the producers, and Amy Pascal. Different writers have been coming in and spinning different tales of where 'Spider-Man' can go from here."

Asked about The Shadow, Columbia Pictures' adaptation of the legendary 1930s pulp hero, Raimi added, "I don't have any news on 'The Shadow' at this time, except that the company that I have with Josh Donen, my producing partner, we've got the rights to 'The Shadow.' I love the character very much and we're trying to work on a story that'll do justice to the character."

As I've said before, I've had enough of Raimi's emo Spiderman to last me a lifetime. I'd really like to see a new cast and a new creative team take a stab at this.

There's another article at IGN movies about the supposed death of the Wonder Woman film. It also mentions, interestingly, that the JLA movie will only have four heroes, not seven. Based on all I've seen and heard so far, I have no faith that WB can deliver a good JLA flick; at this point I'll be happy if they just don't drop the ball on Batman. Have a read...

I loved Hellboy, and I'm happy to see the sequel is finally underway and safe in Del Toro's hands. And it looks like the Wolverine movie has finally been greenlit, this according to RottenTomatoes:

Wolverine Gets Official Title, Release Date
    Snikt!
    by Jeff Giles | October 18, 2007

Cue the chorus of claw jokes, everyone: Variety reports that 20th Century Fox has settled on May 1, 2009 for the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The much-anticipated X-Men prequel, which finds Gavin Hood directing Hugh Jackman in his return to the role of the cigar-chomping costumed superhero, will give fans a peek at Wolverine's backstory. From the article:

There's been much speculation about the spinoff, which gained speed when the studio finalized deals with Jackman (who reprises the role he played in the three "X-Men" pics), Hood and scribe David Benioff, who penned the script.

Pic explores the claw-wielding character Wolverine's violent and romantic past, and his complex relationship with Victor Creed and the ominous Weapon X program, as well as his encounters with other mutants.

Hood will start shooting in Australia before moving to New Zealand and, later, to New Orleans. Latter location is a clue that the storyline might include New Orleans-based character Gambit, who is able to make objects explode and was a professional thief before joining the X-Men.

One character seemingly certain to make an appearance is William Stryker, the Army colonel with a vendetta against the X-Men. According to Variety's report, Liev Schreiber is "reportedly in final talks" to play Stryker.

As the article points out, Wolverine's 5/1/09 debut adds to an already-busy summer for 20th Century Fox -- the studio will go on to release James Cameron's Avatar on May 22, followed by Ice Age 3 on July 1.

And what's this--James Cameron makes movies?!?

I was at Target today and I noticed that the Wonder Woman DVD sets had been marked down to $14.99 for each season; even though I know the episodes won't hold up, I snapped them all right up so that I can once again marvel at Lynda Carter in all her glory.

And speaking of Wonder Woman, I was watching the Transformers movie today and was absolutely knocked out by Megan Fox. The minute I saw her, the first thing that popped into my head was that she looked like a young Lynda Carter and would make a great Wonder Woman. If this JLA movie ever gets off the ground and they can come up with a coherent script, they could do worse than give this girl a tryout. Have a look...

I don't disagree about the director (I like Raimi but he blew the third film) however I disagree about the cast. Just as I can't imagine anyone else being Superman after Reeves, I don't think that anybody but Maguire can play Spiderman. I think he's absolutely fantastic as Spidey. :D

If there is a fourth film, it is particularly important to me that they get it right. I adored the first two Spiderman films and Spiderman is one of my favourite superheroes. They better not screw up two Spiderman films in a row. X-(

Met a lot of Amazonians, have we Dan? :v You really ought to check her out in Transformers. There's quite a bit of physicality and sex appeal in her performance. And she looks uncannily like a young Lynda Carter. That's more than good enough for me. Of course, if she and Jessica Biel want to have a knockdown dragout mud wrestling match to decide who gets the role, I'm all for that. Pehaps you're right. Since Spiderman has been going on for decades (in whatever medium) *Maguire certainly doesn't own the role. If the producers can find someone else who is fantastic then I'll be happy. However for me, though, I loved Maguire in all the films (apart from the third one) so I am still pretty loyal to him. Anyway, I actually am not all that desperate for a fourth film. Not after the horror that was the third film. :#

Thomas Jane gets drunk and slams THE PUNISHER! I tried to censor the profanity so if I missed any, please excuse me.

IESB Exclusive: Thomas Jane is Looking to be Criminal and Slams Punisher!

    Written by Stephanie Sanchez
    Saturday, 20 October 2007

Thomas Jane, Thomas Jane, Thomas Jane…always entertaining, always a good time and usually wasted. At the Spike TV 2007 Scream Awards Jane didn’t disappoint. The booze was flowin’ heavy and a good time was had by all!

He walked into the press room with a greeting of, “What’s up mother f*****s! What’s up c**k s**kers!” Need I say more?

IESB's Robert Sanchez cornered him for a few exclusive words about Steve Niles’ “other” graphic novel Criminal Macabre plus he said a few kind words about the next Punisher film in development.

IESB: How is The Mist coming along?

Thomas Jane: Are you kidding me, it’s going to be the best movie of next year I guarantee it.

IESB: Are you going to play Cal McDonald in Criminal Macabre?

TJ: We are definitely looking into it, we are definitely trying to make that happen. Steve [Niles] and I are all about me being Cal, obviously. Tim Bradstreet has been drawing me as Cal, Steve has been writing me as Cal for the last couple of years so I would be really ****ed off if some other mother f*****r played Cal but me.

IESB: Hey, but someone else is playing Punisher.

TJ: Hey, I don’t know who that guy is but…

    IESB: No one does…

    TJ: And…that’s not the Punisher…goodbye.
Really, it's more fun listening to it than it is reading it. Just so you can hear it for yourself, click on the audio player below…

A little more news has cropped up on the proposed sequel to Superman Returns over at IGN. According to WB, writers Dougherty and Harris are out. This has already lead to speculation that the next Superman film will be something of a reboot along the lines of next year's Hulk and - are you listening Rogue? - Bryan Singer may be the next to go since he's been so closely linked to the now deposed writing team. Apparently WB is aware that the last movie spent too much time on the relationship and not enough on the action. The article also says that Brandon Routh will be returning as the man of steel (good call WB). Sounds like good news all around to me. Here's a link to the article:

And on the JLA front, Transformers star Josh Duhamel is rumored to have read for the part of Batman. Not a bad piece of potential casting as I thought he did a good job in Transformers, although I think he'd make an even better Hal Jordan. :v

Ty Burrell is Doc Samson in Hulk
    Source: Red October 22, 2007

In a Mail Tribune interview with "Back to You" star Ty Burrell it is revealed that the actor will play Doc Samson in The Incredible Hulk:

He managed to get time away from the show recently for shooting on Louis Leterrier's upcoming movie "The Incredible Hulk," with Edward Norton, Liv Tyler and Tim Roth. Burrell plays Doc Samson. The picture is due for release in June.

Doc Samson was a psychiatrist who exposed himself to siphoned radiation and at first, the length of his hair determined how much power he had.

Really not my first ten choices to play Doc Samson. The character's more of a green-haired Thor and doesn't look like a stalker. :#

I take it that the red tee with thunderbolt won't be making an appearance?

"However, Singer's future has now come into question too because of his long-running collaboration with Dougherty and Harris - stretching back to 2003's X2." Which means that Singer has made two films with Dougherty and Harris. That's a long time to be collaborating with someone. :))

I think a reboot is an excellent idea. Like Rogue, I think that the original should be erased from memory. I also think that it would be a good idea for Singer not to return, however the person that I don't want to return at all is Kevin 'my Lex Luther is so boring that he makes planks of wood look like they have personality' Spacey. :s

BTW, I don't know anything about Hal Jordan so I can't comment on whether Josh Duhamel will make a good Jordan. However I don't think he will make a good Batman. I could be wrong of course, but like Rogue, he doesn't appear particular Bat-like to me.

From what I've read and heard, it sounds like the JLA movie will focus primarily on the superheros (Batman, Superman, etc) and not their respective alter egos (Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, etc). As such, I don't think the casting will be as involved as for standalone movies - the main factors will probably be that the actors' names are somewhat familiar to the general public and that they look presentable in their respective costumes.

According to IGN, Hellboy's Rupert Evans has been signed to play Superman. I think he looks the part ... if your idea of Superman is a 5'10" man with no chin. 8-) There are also more tidbits of the story involving Brother Eye and the Omacs. Double 8-)

Just for the heck of it. . .one of the many, many actresses rumored to be in the running for Wonder Woman was (is?) Emily Deschanel, the star of Bones. The knock on her is usually that she's too skinny. Hmmm--I dunno. She's dressed as WW for the upcoming Halloween episode of Bones, and she at least seems to have the thighs. . .

Well, I'm treating this as a rumour for now. No way do I want this guy to play Superman. Is he even 6 feet tall? You can't have a short Superman - sorry, but it's true.
Why can't they just let Routh continue on? It's not like he's not affordable.

If Rupert Evans gets the part though, this can be declared as an automatic bomb. I can see it now:

The knock on her is usually that she's too skinny. Hmmm--I dunno. She's dressed as WW for the upcoming Halloween episode of Bones, and she at least seems to have the thighs. . .

In a word ... NO! What's wrong with her eyes? They look really sunk in. Again, I can only hope these casting rumors are being plucked out of thin air because if there's any truth to them ... shudders.
