I do, however for reasons that are far too complexed and lengthy to go into now, I don't own a copy of either Spider-Man or Spider-Man 2 on DVD. Plus, it must be noted, I'm still waiting for VHS to come back into fashion. :# :))

    Okay...now who's the old man here? :s

For a guy who only has a couple decades of existence under his belt, you'd think that you have nothing but DVDs & CDs in your cradle as a babe. And I thought that I was clinging to remnants of the past. :))

Speaking of little punks with milk on the breath(not you, Dan), I by chance had lunch with the Marvel Sisters downstairs in the breakroom along with Comic Guru & his two flunkies who were already there.

The were talking about the Superman reboot. Needless to say that Guru sighed with angst upon me crossing the threshold but continued on with their discussion.

Why is it that every know-it-all fanboy thinks that changing every aspect of Superman is for the better? Guru said that he wanted the costume revamped dramatically in the new project claiming that the outside underwear was dreadfully outdated, get rid of the cape and then he had the nerve to say Supes needed some type of interstellar ordnance strapped to his leg like he's Tom Strong or Adam Strange. :s

Guru,or as he's actually called- Forsythe, seems to talk over everyone else's opinions on the matter as if his word was law. 8-)

As his eyes continually shifted in my direction, I could sense that he was egging me on... :v He even went as far as to blast Richard Donner...that was it. X-(

I took the bait; I couldn't help it as I blurted out that if WB was that moronic then they wouldn't even cover advertising costs for promoting it because it would bomb HARD. I said changing the character that much, he'd cease to be Superman. I said the problem with the movies, aside from the Donner film, is that you have a very powerful alien being and there's nothing to challenge him outside of a falling plane or an earthquake.

If a tight story is written with a villian that even gives him doubts of his worthiness, it will likely be a hit...not a fashion change like you and others are proposing.
The cheese element, the outfit, the characters, etc. in his world are all what makes the Superman so endearing for the last 70 + years.

Then he goes on to saying that if he were in charge of this, if he were in charge of that and I cut him off:

"If you're so positive that your ideas are the way to approach Superman, then start submitting scripts and screenplays to WB/DC Comics, otherwise shut up."

He said in agitation that I could do the same thing and one of the Sisters jumps in and said that I was at least published with a reputable company. I chose long ago not to share this information with Guru because I thought he was an ***...and I'm not the bragging type honestly.

Guru goes beet-red and doesn't believe it. :))

I told him that I'd be more than happy to bring a boxload of rejection letters from both Marvel & DC to prove it;I try to "do" not just talk. Since he's such an expert on the subject, I challenged him to do the same with his asinine ideas...otherwise shut the hell up so we can eat.

He then took what was left of his apple and carton of milk and left. Kids... :))

Thought I'd share that moment but back on topic, I'm all for Supes retaining his look. Call me old school, sentimental,I don't care... I just hope that Warner Bros. shares my concern before they do anything drastic. Supes' look is fine with me. ;)

SuperHeroHype.com has started a poll as to which director should helm the Superman reboot. To be honest, I'm not familiar with a few of these names. I say Leterrier, Donner or Snyder depending on how good Watchmen actually is.

I certainly don't want Singer, Jackson nor Bay near Superman. 8-)

Another name that should have been added to that list is Renny Harlin. He was like the action movie king back in the 90s. Luc Besson should be on here too.

Here are the stats so far:

Who would like to see direct the "Superman" reboot?

    Zack Snyder 15.4%
    Bryan Singer 11.9%
    Richard Donner 10.2%
    Peter Jackson 9.6%
    Steven Spielberg 9.5%
    Jon Favreau 9.2%
    James Cameron 9.0%
    Michael Bay 8.6%
    Brad Bird 6.2%
    Gore Verbinski 2.5%
    Louis Leterrier 2.0%
    Martin Campbell 1.6%
    Peter Berg 1.3%
    Timur Bekmambetov 1.3%
    Francis Lawrence 0.8%
    Doug Liman 0.8%

As for Forsythe his "ideas" sound about in line with Jon Peter's brainfarts about Superman. For me, the red and blue costume is pretty much sacrosanct. Oh you can make a tweak here and there or change the hue of the colors a bit, but that's about it. If you ditch the costume, not to mention the powers, you really rob Superman of his identity. What's next? Change his origin and have Lex Luthor murder his parents before his eyes when he was a child?

I guess its part and parcel for a generation that probably didn't grow up on this stuff the way we did; they really don't understand or appreciate the history behind the character so they don't understand what a shame it would be to just throw it all away.

For my money, Superman's problems do not lie in his costume. They lie in the fact that no no one has put together a good Superman movie where his adversary is someone who can match him physically, not just mentally.

I had my doubts about Letterier, but he won me over with The Incredible Hulk. And Zack Snyder seems to respect the characters as they appear in the comics and would probably give us a visually striking movie. Either one of those could probably do a good job. I also still think Brett Rattner could make an entertaining movie as well.

I don't think Favreau's sensiblities and style dovetail well with Superman and Donner is probably too old at this point. None of the other names really feel right to me.

CDs yes, but DVDs, well, I use them because I have to, not because I truly love them.

;% You know the funny thing is that in some ways I am older than my age. My favourite musical artist is Queen and my joint-second favourite musical groups are ABBA and Led Zeppelin. The Godfather Parts I & II are my all-time two favourite films, with Taxi Driver being one of my other top 4 films. I've often thought how cool it would have been to have been around during the late 60's and 70's, and I still think that VHS has alot of things going for it that DVD does not. :D

As someone who can cite as one of my all-time favourite cinematic moments the scene in the first Superman film in which Supes ducks into the phone booth, changes and then rescues Lois from the helicopter, I am quite shocked by this. :o Do these people really know anything about superheroes? :s

No. It hasn't. They not long ago knocked over my Little Hal figure while I was on the phone and ripped up an issue of Detective Comics and sprinkled the shreds all over my desk. A good issue that I have at home too. 8-)

They also tacked a sign to my desk that says: "PAUL DINI & BRUCE TIMM SUCKS!" Always trying to hit a nerve with me; they know that I love Dini & Timm. :))

They like the fact that they actually know someone this close who's had an affiliation with one of the Big 3...and they don't like Guru or his attitude either. :))

Precisely. I don't recall us as kids complaining that heroes like Superman or Batman as being outdated and they were around decades before we took a breath.

Superman isn't a broken or dull property, never has been. We just need a director for today's audiences that can reiterate his awesomness onscreen much like how Donner wow'ed us as kids. That doesn't mean changing Supes' attire.

Singer failed to bridge this gap but there's someone out there that can do it.

    05. Sin City

    07. Batman Begins
    08. Iron Man

I think it's sad that it doesn't get more cred :

-why does people go on & on about it being on Earth , I thought it was cool that it took place on Earth....if they had the budget it'd be Eternia.

-Langella & Foster are great in this & the supporting cast does a fine job imo

-Dolph was never a good actor but he's viscious in this one...at least he cared

-the villains are scary , the school scene is like out of a horror movie....He-Man has to fight to stay alive , that never really happened on the toon

-Skeletor turning God is one of the great scenes I've ever seen , major kudos to Langella {[]

I remember watching He-Man years ago and remarking how much gravitas Langella brought to what was essentially a kiddie film. He's a really great but sadly underappreciated actor. Check him out in The Ninth Gate sometime; he's a great villain in that as well.

Changing gears, as much as I love comic book superheroes, I really hate the way Smallville has mucked around with their mythology and history. Now it looks like their bargain basement "Justice League" will be making another appearance sometime this year. Check out the latest low rent versions of Aquaman, Black Canary and Green Arrow - why do Canary and Arrow have the same hairdo? 8-)

Wow :s . I see that they "butched up" Black Canary.

I have arguments with some of my art kids as to why I've never watched this show. Some even calling out my DC faithful card but I reiterate that this program isn't targeting my demographic as much as it does their's.

I can't nor won't recognize those stand-ins for the real deal. Besides, the show's in its what?- 7th, 8th season...shouldn't Clark be moving on now to Metropolis?

Also, you can blame me for not finding out on my own but if my comic history's right, Smallville is in Kansas...what is Aquaman doing in Kansas? I mean nothing's there but freshwater lakes and streams right?

What does he command nautically on this show? Pike? ?:)

:)) I've never been able to sit thru a show from start to finish (and believe me, I've tried), but I think that Clark now has a part-time job at the Daily Planet as an intern or something, even further mucking up the mythos.

Ironically, Tom Welling is 31, even older than Brandon Routh. I think he's a little too old to be playing a guy just out of high school. And is he ever going to put on the suit or will his Clark Kent go thru life wearing read sweaters and blue jeans?

As to those refugees from afternoon soap operas, they do nothing for me either. I've seen them in action and they're about as exciting as a glass of warm milk.

I came across this article by way of IMDB that compares Iron Man to Spider Man, both in the films and comics. I found it a pretty interesting read as it nicely summarizes the appeal of both characters and why, as you get older, Spider Man may not be as appealing as he once was, a condition which I can relate to.

Yeah, the Marvel cronies here are dancing in the streets after this bit of news. Funny, this all seems like a move to gain some form of territory back. :v

First the success of the tear-free Iron Man movie made fans forget about the estrogen of SM3 and then Raimi's trilogy was unseated by TDK at the box office. Looks like their off of the fence now when it comes to putting another sequel together. :v

Spidey 3 was terrible and closed out sort of unevenly with the therapy scene 8-) so it will be interesting to see how Raimi will approach a 4th & 5th.
I'd like to see The Lizard, Molten Man or Shocker in the next one. Electro would be cool but his costume is down right ridiculous. I've always thought that even when campiness was acceptable from days past. :))

Then they could give J.J. Jameson more screen time by introducing The Scorpion for those familiar with that story arc.

Yes, it would have been a crying shame if there had been no more Spiderman movies. I'm sure you wept with joy at the news. It even brought a tear to my eyes.

BTW, that picture of Spiderman you posted doesn't look quite right. I'll have to take a closer look at it after work. :v

Yeah, it is interesting how Iron Man's and Dark Knight's box office haul suddenly ignited this franchise again. And the cynic in me can't help wonder if Raimi and Maguire's sudden desire to do more Spiderman has anything to do with the fact that they haven't exactly been lighting up the box office the last couple of years. Still, its all good; the more comic book adaptations the better as far as I'm concerned.

As for the Sisters and Dan making merry, let them have this brief, fleeting moment in the sun; after all, we know who rules the roost. :v

I for one find it strange Tobey will be back for 2 more Spidey movies. He will be about 35 when filming starts, which I think is too old for the role. After all he is supposed to be some young photojournalist living with relatives, love sick for some girl who is also trying to get a start on life. Spidey fans can correct me, but I don't think Peter ages throughout the comic series.

I would have named a new actor, perhaps creating some buzz. Spidey 1 was good, Spidey 2 excellent and Spidey 3 blew, IMO.

I know I am in the minority, but after Spidey 3, I think the franchise needs something new.

:)) :)) :)) Egad HB! I didn't realize this thread was giving you so much anguish. There's only one thing to do...ditch them both and go watch Catwoman! BTW, was that clip from Scanners?

Sorry, Rogue, but it appears that Loeff is too smart to fall for your evil tricks. :p :))

My love affair with Spidey goes back to the Summer of '69---when, at the age of 7, I bought a copy of The Amazing Spider-Man #88*, at the Illinois State Fair B-) I can remember where the white-painted metal spinner rack was located, the sunshine of the day, the frown on my mother's face as she coughed up the nickels, etc. :))

    * I'm not 100% sure about the issue number, but it's close. It's the classic 'Death of Captain Stacy' story arc B-) About ten years ago, I spent $30 to re-purchase this issue---and the next couple---to replace what my mother (of course) tossed out in '79 or '80 X-( X-( X-( I haven't taken them out in years...it might be time :D
