    * I'm not 100% sure about the issue number, but it's close. It's the classic 'Death of Captain Stacy' story arc B-) About ten years ago, I spent $30 to re-purchase this issue---and the next couple---to replace what my mother (of course) tossed out in '79 or '80 X-( X-( X-( I haven't taken them out in years...it might be time :D

    Good times, Loeff. {[]
I believe that issue was #89? John Romita, SR. art. I should know because I owned a copy of it myself that later on fell victim to one of my mother's cleaning spells. :#

That was the one where Spidey reveals his true identity to Stacy before he dies?

No one drew Spider-Man like Romita Sr. then...and now. B-)

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. It was #89. That one really had an impact on me. And you're right about Romita Sr---IMO, the greatest Spidey artist of them all. I'll alway's be a Batman fan first...but that run of Spidey will always be special to me.

I met Romita Jr at a Chicago Comicon in the early '90s---got an autographed copy (with Frank Miller's also) of the Daredevil graphic novel The Man Without Fear. Jr, while stylistically unique (I enjoyed his Punisher especially), can't shine his old man's shoes.

Not bad, but hardly SomeRandomGuy's best effort.

Speaking of Marvel, IGN is reporting a rumor that the role of Captain America has been offered to...Will Smith? :s This is according to some MTV interview with one Derek Luke. Both IGN and MTV are stressing that this is a rumor at this point.

Here's the link to the article:

A bit long--the best ones are more compact--but still pretty funny. The oblique references to Robert Downey Jr.'s former lifestyle are priceless!

:o :s What? Got to be a rumor.

I like Will Smith but just because his presence usually equates to big box office draws doesn't mean that Marvel should stray quite so extremely from the classic Cap.

If Marvel wants to truly break down doors, cast Smith as Black Panther who's well overdue for his own film because he's very cool. Power Man/Iron Fist even but if this loose news holds any weight, they are going to tick fans off bigtime and it will bomb...

This is like...like Ben Stiller as Blade! :s

It's a rumor...I sill want a Black Panther movie though. If Ghost Rider got one, T'Challa certainly deserves one.

I agree with you, Rogue. They need to be really careful when they cast Steve Rogers. A young, square-jawed unknown is probably the way to go.

Too bad they couldn't have caught Brad Pitt in his twenties---and pumped up like he was for Achilles in Troy. That might have been something.

Seriously though, I'm glad you got a chuckle from the pic. I'm also curious to see where Raimi will go with Spiderman in these next two movies. Assuming Maguire & Dunst sign on, they'll all be in their late 30's by the time its all done - probably too old for more adventures - so it'll be interesting to see where Raimi goes with the characters and where they all end up.

:)) Now there's a mental image for you.

AICN has already stamped out the Will Smith rumor, citing several sources directly at Marvel. Article is here: Will Smith and Captain America

Just speculating here, but I do know that there was a story about a black soldier who was the first recipient of the super-soldier serum (Red, White & Black?) and thus technically the first Captain America; maybe he factors into the storyline somehow and Marvel wants Smith for that part?

Yes, I remember seeing that book somewhere; I've got to pick that read up one of these days. And if they ever pulled the trigger on that incarnation, I'm sure that Smith would do a great job in the title role but if it isn't tradional Cap, fanboys would riot.

Now if Smith is somehow woven into the story, which leads to Steve Rogers introduction and inoculation to the serum, that would be easier to digest for the masses.

Some fans on various message boards are still hung up over Ultimate Nick Fury making a cameo in Iron Man instead of classic Nick...and he's a B character at best. I know what the backlash would be like if they did this to an A-lister like Cap. :s

True. The other thing is that the third film was so disappointing that they would probably need to go off in a fresh direction for the two new films. Perhaps they could go back to the single villain of the first two films. I do agree that the age thing could be problematic, but I think it will come down to a good quality screenplay which doesn't feature any creepy dance numbers/Spidey turning bad etc... :#

If there's anything about the Spidey news that bothers me it's that the movies will be made back-to-back. While this worked for Lord of the Rings and may work for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows (both of which films are based on established stories), I'm afraid the result could be more like the Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean sequels--one unsatisfying, inconclusive film and an awful, incoherent follow-up. Call me worried.

I want them to play up the Jameson/Scorpion story arc or even better, anyone remember the story where Spider-Man & J.J. Jameson were handcuffed together with that mechanism that was set to explode in 24 hours? I think that they were also battling Spider Slayers too? Maybe then Peter can keep his mask on for more than 5 minutes at a time. 8-)

Those are two stories that would redeem the franchise. B-)

Well to be fair HB, both the Matrix and Pirates were surprise hits and the studios then scrambled to get the sequels into theaters as quickly as possible, and before really having a workable script. That doesn't seem to be a problem here. Nobody's even signed yet and I'm sure Raimi & Co. have plenty of time to map out an appropriate story that spans two movies.

So don't lose your head just yet. ;)

It would be nice to see them adapt a couple of storylines from the comics. And I agree that getting J.K. Simmons more involved in the story would probably be a good thing too.

Maybe they could adapt that clone storyline from a few years back...nah! :p

For those interested, one of my co-workers sent me the trailer to the new Marvel animated series BLACK PANTHER.

First of all, does anyone remember those old Marvel cartoons from the 60s with that weird motion and stiffness? Well that was the first thing I thought when I saw this. There's no actual flow to the movement.

Now that may be because producer Denys Cowan (DC artist on Hardware, Batman Confidential, etc.) sacrificed less detail for better flow to stay faithful to John Romita Jr's art style who, btw, was the regular artist on the hero's latest series that started a couple of years ago...

I know that he's a Romita fan but I'm not sure that it was the right call and it shows :# . I don't know what to make of it just yet but it could've looked better. Maybe they had a crappy budget.

BP's awesome since he's a cross between Batman & The Phantom but at first glance, I'm not too excited from this trailer they put together that looks like an African version of 300. ?:)

The second screen is an interview with the guys in charge of it.

There's a streaming video restriction at work so I can't look at the videos, but I do remember those old Marvel shows with their extremely limited animation. They were little more than comic book panels where just the mouth, eyes, and if you're lucky one limb moved.

I used to follow the character when I read Avengers religiously back in the 70's. I really haven't kept up with him since.

I'll check the preview at home tonight but truthfully Rogue, I really haven't been all that impressed by any of Marvel's animated offerings. The animation is usually bargain basement, the dialong often veers towards cheesy, and the stories are usually thin, often little more than excuses for the characters to get in one fight after another. Their offerings seem to usually skew younger than DC's animated efforts which at least try to work story and character moments into the proceedings.

Exactly what this looks like. Romita Jr's art pieced together in the same fashion.

Man, I loved the 70s Avengers comics B-) . I remember telling artist George Perez in Baltimore a couple of years ago just how much his art made an impact on those books.

Black Panther in Avengers mirrors Batman in JLA. The similarities are staggering.Like Bats, he had a contigency plan in case any of the members went rogue and it was none to their liking. He's also territorial like The Phantom. I would suggest to you reading the Christopher Priest run on Panther from early 2000- 01 with Sal Velluto artwork. Very detailed 70s look and the story arc is top notch. B-)

Then you'll hate what they did to Tony Stark in the new IRON MAN cartoon. My son found this before I did and he hates it. He looks to be no older than Nightshooter :)) . No mustache, no cool goatee and he just looks BAD. So does Jim Rhodes. It's like Spider-Man teenage angst bad.

I have a newfound respect for the 90s animated series after looking at this. The dumbing down of animation nowadays:

I can hardly wait to see it...:#

It's kind of funny because when it comes to live action and animation, Marvel and DC are both batting .500. DC's animated offerings are well done while their live action efforts often suffer. Marvel seems to be getting it right by and large with live action but they still don't seem to understand that even people over the age of 12 like animation.

    Guggenheim Talks Green Lantern Script
    Source:ComicCon.com September 12, 2008

Almost a year ago it was announced that Greg Berlanti was set to direct the live-action take on DC Comics' Green Lantern, which he would write with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.

Now, Guggenheim has given ComicCon.com an update:

"I've been working my ass off on Green Lantern," he said, then laughed. "I'm ready for a weekend off. I really can't say too much about it. I've sworn a blood oath of secrecy. I will tell you it features Hal Jordan and is an incredibly faithful rendition of the character. It honors everything everyone loves about the hero. We approach it from a fan's perspective. Every step of the way, we ask ourselves what we want to see and what the fans will want to see. I think we have a script that will actually satisfy on those levels. Right now I'm just doing a rewrite for the studio with Greg [Berlanti] and Michael [Green]. We'll turn that in next week. We just keep moving forward. It's really good stuff!"

Green Lantern was created in 1940. Hal Jordan, a second-generation test pilot, is an ordinary man who has been charged with defending a sector of the universe.

I really want this to go full steam ahead. All I ask is that if they're going to remain faithful as stated, please leave out Hal's white dishwashing gloves. :s
They are the only things that I have issues with on his costume. I know they're signature and all but they just stand out against the color scheme.

Well, that was...strange. Does the whole show take place in 8,000 BC? The animation was pretty bad in that, as was the dialog (I love how an ancient civilization from 10,000 years ago can use modern phrases like "stay cool"). Maybe they just that style for the prologue?

Wow. Shouldn't they call it Iron Boy instead? Once again, the Marvel animation studio feels the need to skew their wares towards the kiddies. Not my cup of tea.

I just checked out the first episode on YouTube. Not bad, although Parker looks like he's about 12 years old. And once again Aunt May - who is drawn to look disturbingly young - is presented as a royal pain in the you know what, with her ongoing financial crises and clueless curfews. I know where Rogue and Tony will be in September 2010. :v

Sci-fi fans coming to Melbourne in 2010

Thousands of science fiction aficionados will make their way to Melbourne in 2010 to attend the 68th World Sci-fi Convention, it was announced today.

The annual convention of the World Science Fiction Society, which has affiliations in more than 30 countries, will run for seven days in September 2010 at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

Major Projects Minister Theo Theophanous says the event - Aussiecon 4 - has universal appeal and he's expecting more than 3,000 fans to converge on Melbourne, generating about $18 million in economic benefit for Victoria.

"Melbourne was chosen to host this event because of its world-class Melbourne Convention Centre, which has already attracted 34 international conventions, bringing nearly 66,100 delegates to Melbourne and worth more than $350 million to the Victorian economy," Mr Theophanous said.

Aussiecon 4 will include panel discussions on a variety of science fiction subjects, such as technology of the future, writing, publishing, and the philosophical and sociological implications of the genre's works.

It looks alright. The synopsis sounds terrific, however I'm not sure that I like the pictures all that much. :# I'll reserve further judgement until I see a trailer.

    Kenneth Branagh to Direct Thor!
    Source:Variety September 28, 2008

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct Thor for Marvel Studios, reports Variety. The comic book adaptation is scheduled for a June 4, 2010 release.

Branagh is the latest in a string of directors -- such as Jon Favreau (Iron Man), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) -- with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comic book fare.

Marvel will set a distributor for Thor shortly.

Thor, written by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse God.

Interesting...very interesting. I would never have pegged Branagh for a comic book adaptation, but of any, Thor would be the best. Branagh has certainly proved himself a capable director with Henry V and Hamlet, and he should be able to coax a viable performances from actors with the lofty "Get ye back to the stygian realm from whence ye came" dialogue. Admittedly, Branagh's had some trouble connecting with audience's on more mainstream fare, but I wouldn't write him off from the start.
