^^^Yeah I had heard that awhile back myself and Jane would've been perfect as Hex. That's a cool picture though even if it's missing the skin-stitched side of the mouth and bucked-eye. B-)

This bit of news I find hard to believe seeing that the leaked workprint gave the film less than stellar reviews even from the diehard Marvel Sisters:

'Wolverine' Trouncing 'Iron Man' Pre-Sale Figures
    Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 1:21AM

Remember when X-Men Origins: Wolverine was kidnapped by those Somali pirates? I think I've got my facts right on that. Anyway, the talk quickly turned to whether or not the illegal downloads would hurt ticket sales. The short answer is no.

Citing sales from MovieTickets.com, Worst Previews reports that Wolverine is outselling Iron Man. There are a few factors here, most notably that Wolverine is an established film character and Iron Man wasn't. But there's also the rather bizarre trend of increased ticket sales in the first four months of 2009 versus 2008. The bad economy has been a big win for the movie business.

Apparently, it's not just that Wolverine is outselling Iron Man but that, with a week to go, it is outselling last summer's Marvel hero three to one. That will probably mean a robust opening weekend for Wolverine, one only a handful of movies the rest of the year are capable of matching.

Don't forget: Iron Man did an eye-opening $100 million last May, and with audiences flooding theaters in numbers about 15% larger than last year, and with these sales figures, I think we might be able to push that summer debut a little further than that.

It probably won't be the summer box office champ, but it's certainly a candidate for the top three.

Such is the nature of fanboys Rogue. Even though the movie is being ripped apart by the critics (Roger Ebert must have seen in on a really bad day and Harry Knowles is doing his usual anti-Fox rant) the fans will eat it up and see it multiple times, if only so that they can then complain about every minute detail and inconsistency.

Personally, I've never been a big mutant fan so I can approach it all with a more neutral eye. I found X-Men 3 to be entertaining so I'll hopefully get some mileage out of this one as well. And if it stinks, I really won't be all that disappointed either.

Tony and I may respectfully have our differences of opinion on Megan Fox portraying Wonder Woman but thanks to Ms. Fox, she's just solidified my misgivings as to why I think that she's just not right for the part...

    Fox Slams Wonder Woman Rumours
    2 May 2009 6:55 AM, PDT

Actress Megan Fox has laughed off rumours she is to portray comic book heroine Wonder Woman in a movie - vowing never to play such a "lame" character.

Director Joss Whedon is rumoured to be putting together a cast for an upcoming big screen outing for the superhero siren, originally played by Lynda Carter in the 1970s TV show.

Fox is reportedly in the running to play the lead role, but the Transformer star is adamant she will not get involved with the comic book adaptation.

She tells British magazine FHM, "She's lame. She flies around in an invisible jet, but she's not invisible. I don't get it."

Thank you, Ms. Fox - Wonder Woman is a lame character that doesn't make sense but running around half-naked while hanging out with robots that turn into cars is not lame and makes sense. I didn't know that sniffing glue was still popular among the young crowd.

None of the comic book characters that are adapted to film are supposed to make sense; it's called escapism.

    Idiot. 8-)

And even still, she's doing the Jonah Hex movie (FANTASY!!!!); the last time I checked, Hex wasn't exactly a re-enactment of a Wyatt Earp historical account.

But then maybe she was just misquoted although I highly doubt it.

My admiration for the beautiful Lynda Carter just swelled even more now. B-)

I wouldn't be too sure about everything in that article Rogue. For one thing, Joss Whedon was attached to Wonder Woman several years ago but walked away from the project when he couldn't get the studio to get behind his premise: he wanted to cast Sarah Michelle Gellar as a barely adult Wonder Woman on her first adventure in the outside world. Given that WB didn't bite and that everything he has tried since then has tanked badly (Dollhouse being the latest flop), I very much doubt WB would entrust Wonder Woman to him again when he couldn't get the job done the first time.

As for Megan Fox, she is clearly as screwed up as she is hot. I don't know if she said those things or if they were taken out of context, but I wouldn't put it by her. She's young (only 22 I think) and obviously still hasn't learned the fine art of being a diplomatic celebrity in a cutthroat business. As I've said many times, she needs to grow up if she wants to be taken seriously as an actress.

As for Lynda Carter, she was and always will be the ideal for Wonder Woman. No matter who is eventually cast, she may do a good job but I'm sure she'll always come up short compared to the divine Ms. Carter.

Well, Tony I am glad that you and Spec enjoyed the film. My son and I viewed it Sunday and while it was a mixed bag for me, my son's criticisms were far more unforgiving. He was generally disappointed with the end result after going into it with such high hopes (his mounted anticipation for nearly a year with this) for obvious reasons.

He hated how the Deadpool character was handled and I can't say that I blame him.

We both agreed that Gambit was only Gambit in name only doing things that weren't faithful to the character like dropping the Cajun accent midway through and other spoilerish things.

It was okay once I tried seperating comic Logan from movie Logan and I digested it at face value; the first hour's pacing kept me into it and by the time it got to Logan meeting up with John Wraith, it was sort of downhill from there.

There were a few WTF moments like this one that stands out for me so glaringly:
Wolverine blocking the power of the Cyclops' optic blasts with his claws in a Superman 2 Lester kind of way
    :s

Too unforgivable for us both and I remember shaking my head in disgust. That just wouldn't happen.

Sad thing is, Wolverine will make its money back handily despite being an okay action film where Watchmen will end up being this generation's Dune and probably just break even financially.

I'm kind of on the fence whether or not I'll get the dvd but to be honest, I don't own the other 3 on video either; I like X-Men in the comics but the movie versions aren't really that desirable enough for me to snatch off of the shelf like other comic titles. Some characters move you more than others I guess...I'd love to see Marvel get back the rights just to see what they could do with them.

My grade for it: 6.5/10 stars

    My kid's: 4/20 stars :))

I think that had Fox handled Deadpool and Gambit better he would've been happier...and so would the Sisters. :))

Rather than hijack the "Last Film Seen" thread, I thought it might be a good idea to continue any discussion of X-Men Origins: Wolverine here instead.

I'm sorry to hear that you and your boy were disappointed by the movie Rogue. For diehard fans of the comic I can see how they would be turned off by some of the changes; if WB were to be as liberal with its DC properties I'm sure it would bother me more. Luckily, my brother and I were never really fans of the mutant books so we had no trouble separating the movies from the comics in this one case. Oddly enough, the mutant films that are derided the most (this and X-Men 3) are our favorites precisely because they jettison a lot of the social commentary and relationship angst of the books in favor of a more visceral, action oriented plot; I find X-Men 1 and especially 2 really hard to sit thru.

The only real WTF moment for me was Wolverine not figuring out that
Silverfox wasn't really dead. With his heightened senses I would have thought he'd see right thru the ruse.
I guess you can chalk it up to his emotional state at the time. I wasn't bothered by the optic blast deflection because (A) Adamantium is supposed to be indestructible, so it kind of made sense that he could do that within the reality of the films, and (B) irrespective of comic continuity, it was a pretty cool moment, visually speaking.

With regard to Deadpool, I don't know if you sat thru the credits but at my screening there was a little scene that follows up on his apparent fate. There are also persistent rumors of an ending out there where
it is revealed that Weapon XI was actually a clone of Slade.

Its kind of ironic that the fanboys have villified this movie since it seems to work so hard to give us the setups for the eventual payoffs in X-Men 1 and 2; there are a lot of loose ends left dangling that we know how will ultimately will be resolved. In that sense, I thought the movie fit quite nicely into the overall cinematic story arc.

What did you think of Victor Creed? He was so different from Sabretooth in the first movie in terms of looks, intelligence and attitude (and indeed is never even called Sabretooth here) that for the purposes of the films, I almost tend to view them as two different characters.

Hey Rogue, sorry to hear you and your son did not enjoy it. I have to say I got a kick out of it. Not being a huge fan of x-men, I could just watch it as an action flick. I was totally entertained and a whole less tired than when I saw Dark Knight. Enjoyed the fights, the humor and overall coolness of the flick. That's all I was expecting going into it and that's what I came away with. I've stopped trying to compare and contrast things that I've read and how they translate to film. I've learned that no matter how directors/writers/actors try, they ultimately will never please one's mind's eye version of any work. Someone, someplace will always find something wrong with it. Ultimately, and maybe because I'm getting older, it comes down to, Did I enjoy myself, was I entertained for two hours. Xmen 3 and Wolverine were both enjoyable to me much more so than the Bryan Singer's opuses which I just cannot sit through.

One more thing I'd like to add on the Wolverine saga: in reading fan reaction to the movie, I find it amusing how, after years of villifying Brett Rattner and generally painting him as an antichrist for "ruining" X-Men 3, so many fanboys are now saying that even that movie was watchable and actually pretty good compared to Wolverine.

I'm willing to bet money that when that X-Men: First Class movie about teenaged mutants gets made and released a few years down the road, those same outraged fanboys will similarly pine about how compared to that, Wolverine wasn't so bad after all.

    I hear ya, Spec. B-)

You know I really, really try not to discern too much when I go see comic book adaptations but it's really hard for me not to seeing that I haven't stop reading some of the books. I never outgrew it so it must just be in my system. :)) .

My son breathes Marvel much more than I ever did when I was his age and it was a real downer for him, much like Spiderman 3 was, after getting hyped up for almost a year.

We both agreed that this movie summer isn't going to be anything special like 1989 or 2008 was so we'll probably just endure the season for what it's turning out to be..."filler".

I just hope that we're around for summer 2010: Iron Man 2, Jonah Hex and Green Lantern - 3 DVDs that are already purchased in my mind. They'd have to really stink for me not to and I highly doubt that. :D

I actually like Liev as Sabertooth; he was one of the highpoints of the film but the script really didn't do him nor Jackman much justice with that climax and all. Oh God...that climax. :#

I might still get the dvd but I've never had a desire to buy X-1 & 2 and they both can be found in bargain bins at certain stores. Both are okay but nothing I just have to have right this moment...

I remember reading alot of the backlash that Rattner received after directing X-3 and it was uncalled for. I really felt sorry for him because the movie was enjoyable. The same with Tim Story as well on FF 1&2.

Although it's been rumored that Fox exec Tim Rothman likes to micro-manage these productions to the point of irritability.

Yeah, I have heard this quite alot, Krass. Alot of the blame can be attributed to Rothman who made the call on the cloud Galactus, not Story who pleaded for the actual character to make an appearance in FF2 (from what I've read on a few sites). And his meddlesome ways that nearly botched X3 altogether while micro-managing Rattner.

I don't think that Rothman really cares for the comic source material, just the big bucks that come from it. It was reported that he did the same thing with director Gavin Hood on Wolverine.

Hopefully my son may like this bit of news B-) :

    UPDATE: Deadpool Spin-Off Moving Forward
    Source:The Hollywood Reporter May 6, 2009

20th Century Fox is developing a X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off featuring Deadpool, the wise-cracking mercenary played in the film by Ryan Reynolds, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Reynolds is attached to reprise the character for what for now is simply being called Deadpool. Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel Studios would act as producers.

The project is currently out to writers.

The trade adds that the studio considered a Deadpool spin-off early in "Wolverine's" development process, which is why it cast Reynolds.

UPDATE: A source close to Fox tells us that the Deadpool and second "Wolverine" movies are coming from the two Easter Eggs at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine:
"We are developing a spinoff with Deadpool, as well. It is one of the two different "Easter egg" scenes after the credits of WOLVERINE and hints at two different movies that are coming FROM THEM. One is the Japan backstory which was announced earlier, the other is about Deadpool. The film, which would be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel, has Ryan Reynolds attached and would be a complete exploration of this unique character - his origins, his emergence as the Merc with with the Mouth, etc. We are looking for writers as well."

Several sites including Superherohype are reporting that Chris Hemsworth has been cast as Thor for Kenneth Branagh's upcoming adaptation for Marvel.

Hemsworth recently played George Kirk, James T. Kirk's father, in the new Star Trek movie and I thought he did a very good job with that small but very important part. Full article is here: Chris Hemsworth is Thor?

Not a bad choice for Thor. I'm still wondering if Branagh has what it takes to craft a superhero movie...the closest he came to popular culture fare was 'Frankenstein' and that didn't take too well. Of all the comic book movies, this one I think is the hardest...Thor is a good fit in the Asgardian world, but he might be hard to swallow flying around the buildings of New York City, and he certainly doesn't look good running down the beach (anyone still trying to forget that Incredible Hulk TV movie from the 80's?). We'll just have to wait and see!

I've been reading that Branagh has been immersing himself in Thor lore and has become quite enamored of the comic, so hopefully he'll have more success with this property.

I'm not familiar with Skarsgard's work but based on photos, I do agree that he looked the part. In Hemsworth's favor, I do think he has the perfect voice for Thor, very deep and with a good timbre. On one of the promos for the new Star Trek movie they showed his workout regimen - the guy's in incredible shape, so I think he'll be fine.

Yeah Spec sort of had my number on that one. It's not a total loss for me because that pic is Jonah Hex but it would've been a bolder stroke for the makeup crew to go that extra mile. I guess that I'm a little too fanboy with Hex (it was one of my favorite characters growing up in the 70s) and wanted that look straight out of the comic book. The eye would've definetely made the aesthetic complete for me. ;%

That's a good question because I thought of that myself after I calmed down some; they might play around with that strategy to see which look works better after all of the initial filming is complete. But like Tony said, WB might not want their leading man looking too homely.

It won't stop me from seeing this day one either way though.

Thanks HB; there's a streaming video restriction at work; so I'll have to wait till I get home to catch this one.

Now, from the "beating a dead horse" department, Michael Papajohn (the actor who played Uncle Ben's killer in Spiderman 1 and 3) is going around saying that he's been signed to appear in Spiderman 4. Don't know if Raimi plans to subject us to yet another angst-ridden flashback of Uncle Ben's last moments or if the actor will be used in a more creative way...like maybe a Mysterio-induced hallucination of Uncle Ben's last moments.
  • HardyboyHardyboy Posts: 5,912Chief of Staff
Actually, I saw the same story and on one of the websites, someone wrote in to say he was there when Papajohn was talking and he was clearly joking. I hope so--if I want anything from Spider-man 4, it's to go out in a new direction.

Don't care for The Simpsons at all but it would be hilarious to see an animated JLA series based off of Groening's style. :))
