Casino Royale has smashed a Bond box office record, taking more in its first day of release than any previous 007 film, says Columbia Pictures.
The film, which features Daniel Craig's first outing as the super-spy, sold £1.7m of tickets in the UK on Thursday.
The figure is more than twice as much as the previous record-holder, 2002's Die Another Day, took in its first day.
Casino Royale has also been approved by China's censors, and will be the first 007 film to be screened in the country.
Authorities have previously disapproved of the violent and sexual content of the film franchise, reported film industry magazine Variety.
"We are extremely pleased that the film has passed and expect it to be one of the highest-grossing films next year in China," said Li Chow, Sony Pictures' general manager in the country.
The film is expected to hit China's cinemas in January 2007.
Casino Royale is the 21st Bond film, and early reviews have praised Craig's gritty and complex performance in the lead role.
The movie is an adaptation of Ian Fleming's first Bond novel and is one of the few without gadget-maker Q or much-loved secretary Miss Moneypenny.
It opens in 27 countries, including the US and Russia, this weekend.
Weekend box office, 3 days:
USA: $40,833,156 48.5%
+ others countries: $43,407,886 51.5%
= Worldwide: $84,241,042

Since MBE seems to have taken a leave of absence, it looks like it's up to me to post the actuals. Here's the crucial U.S. information from BoxOfficeMojo:
Interesting: Happy Feet is nearly an hour shorter than CR and opened on nearly 400 more screens, yet it earned only $700,276 more than CR. So much for the penguins "tap dancing all over Bond!" Any way you slice it, CR is a big, fat hit.
Happy Feet won in the American an Canadian Box office, but it hasn't got a huge difference with CR, yet in CnB they are happy with their endorsement and claiming the "Boycott" a success.
So, leaving them alone, here is my question... Is a movie almost as good (in the box office) as the No. 1 spot a failure... that is a boycott?
Sadly in my country the numbers will helpo more the Penguins... just until CR opened and was a success, they remembered that it will come here, but that was the pretty end of the local reports. Sadly it won't be No. 1, and box office wont e a lot of money
I caught a BBC3 "60 seconds" news report last night, where they mentioned Happy Feet beating CR. What was interesting was it was reported from the angle of "Americans are stupid; here's the proof" - to the extent that it ended with the news reader rolling his eyes and shaking his head at 007 being beaten by the dancing penguins Stateside!
(I should point out that BBC3 is targeted at a younger, more lightweight audience than the usual BBC News viewer).

Yep, parents taking their kids to enjoy a movie together is a terribly stupid thing. Whats wrong with my fellow countrymen?

Evidently, since BBC3 apparently doesn't understand that the audience for the penguin movie is not the same audience as CR's. You might as well compare the box office for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" with "Deep Throat." The only benefit is that the penguin people can say "No. 1 movie in America!" in their TV ads. But of course, that still isn't going to convince anyone over the age of 13 to go -- unless mom says they have to take their little sister.

What does that say about me who actually wouldn't mind seeing Happy Feet? ;% (There are other more 'adult' films which I would rather see but I am looking forward to seeing Happy Feet nonetheless. )

And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman

Are you sure you'll approve of the penguin who's playing the lead?
I didn't mean what I said above literally; there are some kids' movies I've liked, too. "Babe," for instance, was hilarious, I thought.
All CR has to do to overcome the penguin debacle is this: start advertizing as the number 1 action film in America.
Are you sure you'll approve of the penguin who's playing the lead?
You must be really enjoying yourself, what with all your jabs at me. I must warn you however, that I am a sleeping lion; I will awaken once I see CR, and be warned, you do not want to see me roar! )

I know. I was having a bit of a go at you. It's absolutely true that CR is not exactly targeted towards young children and their parents.

I wouldn't worry about it- if you had to deliver the news in a minute every hour on the hour I'm sure you'd make a few weak jokes too.

It's all part of the plan to lure you to the dark side, Dan. Kind like Stockholm Syndrome. By the time I'm finished with you, you will name your next child "Daniel Craig Same."
Here's an update: the penguins may have won the weekend battle, but Bond is winning the war! According to BoxOfficeMojo, as of November 20, Casino Royale has earned $44,669,928 in the U.S.; while Happy Feet has made $44,555,879. If that isn't impressive, look at the worldwide grosses: HF--which, to be fair, hasn't gone into wide release overseas--has made $45,530,879. . .while Bond has made a measly $88,077,814! Mmmmm--smells a lot like penguin cookin'!
Here's an update: the penguins may have won the weekend battle, but Bond is winning the war!
I predict that CR will ultimately win the war.
You cant be too harsh with the penguins though, they are aimed at a totally different audience and HF will also get my money when it opens here in December. Having said that, CR will get my money at least 1 or 2 more times more
Now that the kids have seen the penguins, it's time for mom and dad to put the kids to bed and have some adult fun :v And CR is just the ticket.
I think this movie is going to be be huge in the U.S.
New BoxOfficeMojo update! As of November 21, Casino Royale has earned $49,172,510 at the American box office ($92,580,396 worldwide); while HF is at $48,571,248. BOM even has CR at #1 on its homepage. I'll bet EON is hoping that a certain website calls for another boycott!
Not bad at all. It should have a very good weekend here in the U.S. with the long Thanksgiving weekend. It's kind of a tradition to go to the movies after dinner. I know some people from my office are planning to go. Without any prompting from me, either.
OK, here's the bad news: going by its estimates (I think the fact that today is an American holiday has kept BOM from using more solid numbers), BoxOfficeMojo has again placed Happy Feet at #1 in the U.S., having taken in $55,971,000. However, CR is only a bit more than $100,000 behind, having earned $55,823,000 in America. As of November 22, CR's worldwide take is $99,230,886. The ol' Yankee dollar is responsible for more than half of CR's earnings--so no more complaining about the movie not opening #1 in the States.
Hardyboy is back with his numbers-crunching services! Man, if only my old math teachers--who'd always sigh and shake their heads over my assignments--could see me now!
Anyway, and again bearing in mind that these are ESTIMATES and that nothing will be solid until Sunday or Monday, things continue to bode well for Casino Royale. BoxOfficeMojo estimates CR's Thursday (Thanksgiving) take in the U.S. to be $7,625,000, putting it well ahead of Happy Feet ($6,025,000) and the newly-released Denzel Washington flick, Deja Vu ($4,625,000). All three films are expected to duke it out for #1 over the all-important Thanksgiving weekend.
So, what are the big numbers? Again, these are BOM estimates, but CR has made about $63,450,000 in its first full week on American screens, and its worldwide total is $106,857,886! If I were a mean, snarky person I'd say that the "Boycott CR" movement better get in gear because the film is about to recoup its costs, but I'm not a mean, snarky person. :v

I was right with Craig as Bond.
This is all.

HF= Worldwide: $45,530,879
Anyhow, this is really new info, i didn't know, but i realize than some other fellas don't know or will hardly accept it.
