I can't say that I agree with you as I am a huge Moore fan and Dalton is my least favourite Bond. If my ideal world existed, Dalton would never have played Bond. Additionally, if Lazenby didn't make OHMSS, I wish that Connery would have done it instead.

That said, there are many Dalton fans on this site. I think that myself and JFF are perhaps the most passionately anti-Dalton here, ;) however this is a wonderful site regardless of your personal preference.

    I am also very anti-Dalton!

I love TD but he was way too young to star in OHMSS.

If there's one thing Craig's superficially similar Bond shows, it's that Bond needs to be arrogant and self-confident, and Tim never really projected that.

I totally agree with this. I have said this before, Bond shouldn't cry and TD did. I still hate him for that. Now while I don't think he was that bad, he was too emo and almost too nice for me. The reason why people like Sean Connery and Daniel Craig is because they are both the @$$hole Bonds of series. And they are like that to everyone without discrimination of person. That's Bond. He has to be a hard@$$ all the time, even to the ladies, or else he completely lacks authority and for me TD lacked authority.

is there a perfect bond?sean?probably the nearest, but some fans don't think he's the best,so if it's not 100%,well he's obviously not perfect.what i like about dalton is his stature and poise;he looks the part.in the living daylights when he jumps over the wall and points his gun at the child with the balloon, that's a classic bond scene.and when he nuts the guy in license to kill, well we had never seen anything like that before or since, until dc came along.
the problem with him was i did't see him as a lady killer.you could see how women would fancy the three bonds who came before, but i just couldn't see it with him.his hair cuts were all wrong, especially the slick back look in the casino scene in license to kill, and when he smiled, well he looked like the joker from batman.
so as i said before,no bonds perfect, but timothy dalton was bond, and thats alright by me.

I don't remember Dalton crying. Lazenby did in OHMSS, but I can't remember Dalton doing it. He was certainly upset at seeing his friend's wife murdered in LTK, but I can't recall him weeping.

I don't think he meant it literally. I could call Dalton's Bond relatively a 'pant-wetter' as he never seems as sure of himself as other Bonds (despite being able to kil everyone he meets!) but I don't literally mean that he wets his pants.

Along the lines of SB Diamond's reply, my friends and I are split with Dalton getting misty over Kara. I guess it depends on the individual if the "pant-wetter" aspect is a positive or negative. For the "traditional" film Bond persona, anything towards being too human (and thus un-superhuman?) is bad, but because Dalton's twist on the film character was paradoxically to make it like the literary character, I think he successfully met his objective.

Lit Bond did experience moments of self-doubt, uncertainty and desperation, all internalized of course, which Dalton then "acted out." However, despite of this, Dalton still managed to generate an indomitable and singleminded determination in his veneer as a flawed "tough customer."

I'm not a big fan of Dalton. I think he was extremely good looking, but I don't think his performances were all that impressive. Of course, it may because I don't particularly like his films. Perhaps if I had enjoyed his films more, I might have a more positive opinion of him. Anyway, he's my least favourite Bond, although I don't particularly dislike him.

I couldn't go with Dalton getting all moved at Kara's cello playing. It seemed most soppy. Plus, he was conning her that he was Yuri's friend, so maybe his falling in love was bogus too?

Such a drag that with both Lazenby and Dalton you have the new actor having to pretend to be someone other than Bond, playing a pretend role. It makes the audience unsure of what they're dealing with.

    Into what language? :D

Lazenby was in disguise as Sir Hilary Bray in OHMSS, having to play a bore for part of his debut, making a bad first impression.

Dalton was not in physical disguise, but had to pretend to be a friend of Kara's lover, defector Yuri, to squeeze info out of her. A duplicitous way of behaving, and you didn't quite know if he was really falling in love or just acting the part.

I liked him as Sir Hillary Bray. I didn't think he was such a bore at all. :))

Maybe not the best Bond - that title will always rest with Connery - but certainly one of the best. He is definitely the most like Fleming's Bond.

I think he would have been great in OHMSS if maybe a bit to young. After the Roger Moore 'Bond comedies' TLD was a blast of fresh air. A Bond who was young, athletic and looked and acted like a killer. TLD is one of my favourite Bond movies even if it is now seriously dated by the change in world events.

Dalton was unlucky with LTK. The producers were trying something different, but unlike CR it did not quite work. Probably wrong time. Also at that time the cinema was dominated by the Stallone, Schwartenagger movies with massive body counts and tons of gore and there was no way a Bond movie could enter into that particuliar arena.

LTK was not as well paced as TLD. It seemed to flag in the middle after Bond got to Isthmus. Also in those days we were not ready for a Bond who made mistakes and got allies killed. I also have to agree with many other fans that LTK did not feel like a Bond movie. It didn't seem to really be sure what it wanted to be. And much as I love Dalton as Bond he did seem to be acting just a bit too much in LTK.

I think he should have taken over as Bond in FYEO. The return to the more realistic plots would have suited him perfectly, and it would have made OP and AVTAK much better movies.

Dalton always wanted to play Bond the way Craig did in CR. The only difference is that Craig was allowed. If Dalton had been Craig's age and cast in CR he would have played it every bit as well as Craig.

I loved Timothy Dalton and sincerely wish he has done a few more movies.

The only shortcomings of TLD are the parts that felt written for Moore. That, and anytime Joe Don Baker is on screen (there is no worse actor).

LTK was too 1980's Miami Vice/Road House/Commando to be a Bond flick, really. It had its great moments - I liked the villians and their smuggling scheme, I liked the action on the boat - but overall it just feels... dirty, and cheap.

As for Bond crying... well, Craig cried when Vesper died, if you recall.

Hello peeps, Phil's here the voice of reason.

Right I'd just like to say Tim Dalton is one of my fav bonds. He's a very likeable and talented actor who portrays Bond in a gritty way. The problem I have with his films is basically everyone else in them.

In LTK the villan Sanchez is excellent, it's just the other actors/actresses who spoil the show. Sanchez's henchmen for example are extremely poor and have no presence or impact. Surely you should be able to remember their names! The cop killer Kiliver, the terrible Felix Leiter and that other bloke Crest are just cr*p, really poor actors who are just going through the motions and reading out their lines.

The script also lets LTK down, really 2nd rate for a Bond film, luckily Michael Wilson hasn't written a solo script since!

The special effects aren't too bad, but the gadgets are a real letdown. Programming the dodgy signature gun with a calculator is pretty lame, then you have an exploding alarm clock and some plastic explosive. It's like they were just last minute ideas....what have we got lying about, an old clock and some toothpaste....poor.

The tanker end sequence I think is superb, the title song and sequence are not however. Slow, boring and very forgettable.

The Living Daylights also has the same problem -
actors and actresses who let the films down.
That General Koskov is just plain annoying with his dodgy accent and Brad Whitaker is just one dimensional.

The reason I can't watch TLD anymore in full is the dodgy effects. Right the Land Rover at the start starts off ok, but when it goes off the cliff and blows up...it just doesn't work.....he would have been blown to pieces, he's barely out it when it explodes. Also that women on the boat doesn't hear the explosion or see anything whilst on the phone?! Oh yeah, if you watch the sequence the boat is moving quite fast at first, but when Bond uses the phone it looks like the boat isn't moving at all!

Also the plane sequence, why does the plane nose dive into the mountains when seconds before Bond escapes onto flat terrain and the plane is level? It just doesn't look right. Bond says no place to put down...looks like plenty of room to me, all that flat ground and a also road....perfect to land a plane on!

Timothy Dalton is a great Bond, the films he appears in however aren't that good.

With a bigger budget, a better cast and better scripts Tim could still be churning them out today!

I disagree. Mr. Dalton got a fair share of the limelight. The characterisation of Whitiker and Kara leaves much to be desired during "Daylights" but the plot is one of my favourites. The supporting-supporting cast is great - Art Malik and John Rhys-Davies are both excellent.

So, while there are a few shortfalls of "Daylights", I really do enjoy that picture.

    Dalton should have returned... :(

    I love Timothy Dalton and him films he brought the realism after the good but silly:(|) Moore era I love his coolnessB-) and the way he looks like he isn't trying I my opinion second best after Connary and drawing with Craig another gritty bond.:007)-{

First the easy part - for me Connery was the best hands-down because he was able to blend the elegance, menance and humor of Bond into a cohesive, imminently watchable character. Roger Moore is at the other end of the scale, managing to effortlessly project only the goofy humor that ruined many of the Bond films for me. Except for very rare occasions (e.g. kicking the car over the cliff in "For Your Eyes Only"), Moore didn't appear to be the least bit dangerous and he was awkward in his fight scenes. The others are more difficult to rank because there are aspects of all of them that I really enjoy. Dalton definitely has the edge and the air of danger that Bond should project, but any humor he exhibited seemed very forced. Lazenby was decent in my view, but his inexperience as an actor was apparent. I think he had the potential to grow in the role, especially if he had a story as spectacular as "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (if ONLY Connery had done that one - BOND PERFECTION!) I thought Brosnan made a very respectable Bond, but his films Bond scripts left something to be desired (especially TND and DAD). Finally, Craig - off to a great start and looking forward to his next Bond outing.
