Casino Royale has also been illegally downloaded 200,000 times, according to internet monitoring company Envisional.

Two pirated versions were available for free access on public file-sharing networks over the weekend, it said.

'Conspiracy'

It is believed that one was recorded by camcorder in Russia, while the other is thought to have come from Italy.

The announcement follows reports that pirated DVDs of Casino Royale were on sale in London and Scotland last week.

Envisional claims the film - which opened in the UK on Thursday and the US on Friday - was available to download by Saturday morning.

"In the face of international conspiracy Bond is really up against it," said Dr David Price, head of piracy intelligence at the Cambridge based company.

Why anyone would want to watch a movie filmed with a camcorder is beyond me.

I haven't seen the film yet, and if I was to download a bootleg, it sure wouldn't be off a camcorder in the movies, but rather a rip off a DVD that someone stuck on the internet for the whole world to download off of...

Because it saves going out... saves the fear of wasting money or means they can have a copy, therefore, watch it whenever they like. I haven't got one myself because i have seen it at the cinema twice ;) . Saying that, a mate of mine has a pirate copy so i might try and get that off him :))

I don't get it either and I don't get how people seem to think it is OK. But I guess that is my old fashion self.

This may look shocking but is truth: There isn't anything against Casino Royale with this copies... It is nor personal, in fact, i could assure that pretty much every film has a copy (illegal) version. Pirates search for a new or impressive film (like, you know. Casino Royale) and getting at least one copy let them make hundreds, even thousands. it affects directly the numbers (Box office an the companies as well) but also gives a bigger number of viewers, their opinions and so on...

Why to see it: over here (SA) there are lots of reasons:

    * it is cheaper, with a low quality, but cheaper.
    * it is faster (here opens in Dec 7, but i can bet you can get it this weekend in the black market)
    * it has the comfortabilities of seeing it in home as much times as you want.
    * Theatres aren't for everybody
    * you would be surprised to see how easy is to get one.

But in UK, it beats me why.

Edit: you didn't hear it from me, but it seems that Casino Royale has just opened in youtube... Come On!!!

I will wait and pay through the nose for a decent DVD....why watch a high quality film through a poor quality lense. I tend to think it is not just about the movie, but about the thrill of an illegal act. :(

Can't speak for London, but they were certainly on sale in Scotland at the weekend (18th and 19th November) in a market in Glasgow (the Barras, as if fellow Scots would need told that). No, I didn't buy one.

There was once a story along the lines of:

Spielberg and Scorsese find themselves in Glasgow together and decide to go for a walk about. They end up in the Barras, and unrecognised go for a look at a DVD stall.

"Look, Marty" says Spielberg, "isn't that your new film they've got for sale there?"

"Yes it is", replies Scorsese, "but I don't know how it can be- I haven't finished shooting it yet."

Piracy capital of the European Union, apparently. Last Friday I contemplated a trip to the Barras just to see if they were on sale already (I wouldn't buy one either), just from the curioso point of view.

No amount of police raids really manage to stem the flow there, it seems.

(Incidentally, a work colleague just this morning lent another colleague Happy Feet on DVD for his kids. We're talking DVD quality too, not just filmed on camcorder...)

The profuse police presence has stemmed the public display of illegal DVDs, etc, but as you say the flow continues- there was a news story last week about a large quantity of DVDs being seized in Alloa, for instance- it's just more subtle these days. I was only there to buy guitar strings (legally!).
Anyway, I'm more than happy to await the official DVD with the attendant extras.
