new way to rank bond films

I happened on an intersting columm in another bond web site that is a new way to rank bond films.
In a nutshell there are 10 catagories that you can give each bond film up to 10 points for a perfect score of 100. the categories are

1. bond himself, if the actor did a good job in this particular movie.

2.pre title sequence. Every bond fan knows this is a very intergal part of the movie,

3 The music and the title sequence. Again everyone knows that the best music is big part of making the movie good.

4. bond girls. enogh said.

5. villans again a good bad guy makes a better film.

6 side kicks and extra cast, sometimes a smaller part in a bond movie is very memorable.

7. gadjets. What Q has for us definatly makes the film more fun.

8. plot I know I know its sometimes not the most important thing in a bond film, but it helps.

9 locations I think interesting places for bond is much more important than some people think

10 chases and escapes Isnt that one of the biggest reasons we watch bond to see how he gets out of each jam. A very intergal part of any bond movie,,


well thats it, take each movie give it a score in each catagory and see what scores each movie comes up with. I think you will be suprised that some movies will do better that you thought and some that you like will do poorly..

my two top scores are gf and frwl with 82 points with tswlm 81 and ge with 79. My lowest are avtak and mr with 42 tmwtgg 53 and dad 54.
Anyway I hope this gives you a little fun and shows a new way to rate the movies.Looking forward to seeing other peoples scores!!!!!

    So, using this system to rate "Casino Royale::

    1. Daniel Craig: 10. Fantastic Bond, IMHO. Best since Connery.

    2. PTS: 10. Sets the entire tone of the film, and is stylisticly very interesting, cutting from the harsh, grainly black and white violence of the bathroom fight to the cold, calm doalogue of the second kill.

    3. Music and titles: It's a 10 for the titles, but a 4 for the dreadfiul song. I'll go with 7 overall

    4. Bond Girls: Solange is the sexy eye candy, but Vesper is the woman to fall in love with, beautiful, smart, and a double agent to boot. Still, not the usual amount of sexual charge we're used to in a Bond film. 8 overall.

    5. Le Chiffre is an interesting villain, but not awe inspiring. he gaions huge points for the way he tortures Bond, though. 8.

    6. Supporting Roles: M is fantastic, creating a great foil for Craig to act off of. I get the sense that Judi Dench enjoyed this outing more than her previous appearances. Felix leiter is played brilliantly by Geoffrey Wright, but I think he was underused. Mathis is a great character piece, and I love how they kept us guessing about him right until the films end. I'll give them an 8 in this category.

    7. Gadgets: Well, there really aren't any. I guess the car is the biggest one. Still, the use of cell phones was very smart. 6.

    8. Plot: 10, all the way. This was one of the smartest Bond films I can think of. Tight scripting, and a plot that kept you interested in the characters and what they were going through from start to finish.

    9. Locations. Unfortunately, not much new in this one. We see Nassau again, and Miami. However, Montenegro was beautiful, and venice is, well, Venice. 7 on this one.

    10. Chases and escapes. Big 10 here. The madagascar scene was breathtaking. The car chase was too short, but made up for it in the amazing airport sequence and the Venice fight. This was an exciting James Bond adventure which still took time to tell a good story.

    Total Score: 84 out of 100. A!

    Personally, I think this is a little too bland. I generally agree with the elements listed, but such a formulaic analysis of the films doesn't allow originality in the series to fare well, and I sometimes like depatures from the traditional "Goldfinger" formula. Also too, I'd add a section about authenticity to Ian Fleming's Bond, from subtle references, direct adaptations (and how well or unwell they were done), and whether or not a film has Flemings "spirit" in it. Perhaps authenticity to Fleming's Bond would be better served as a sub category to analyize each section in the list, but if that's the case it requires people who have never read a Bond book to evaluate the films on a standard of which they have no knowledge, and thats not fair. Neither is assigning the same grading weight to each category. Why should the characterization of 007 in a film be of equal weight to where the film took place? Let's face it, all these elements may make up a traditional Bond movie, but that doesn't mean their importance is directly proportionate to each other.

    That points to one of the primary problems whenever something like this is standardized, the lack of indivudal preference that make forums like this worth having. Sure, we could all agree on some general aspects we like about Bond, but, for the sake of interesting discussion, the rubric by which we evaluate the films should be left to us.

    Casino Royale Rating out of 100

    1. bond himself.
    Daniel Criag- A big 10 He has done an outstanding job as playing Bond.

    2.pre title sequence.
    I'd give the PTS an 9 because it was intense.

    3 The music and the title sequence.
    Definately a 10, although i't didn't have any women dancing around like most title sequences it was still great, on top of that the music just made it more exciting.

    4. bond girls.
    Another Big 10. Eva Grenn and Caterina Murino, all i have to say is, who wouldn't say no to those sexy beings!!

    5. villans again a good bad guy makes a better film.
    I'd give the villans a 9 because there was a mixture of villans first Le Chiffre, then that guy with the eye patch and finally Mr. White.All great though.

    6 side kicks and extra cast.
    I'd give SK and extras an 8.

    7. gadjets. What Q has for us definatly makes the film more fun.
    I'd only give the gadgets a 5-6 because the only thing close to a gadget was his phone which only had GPRS. Plus the Aston Martin bearly lasted half of the movie which was a dissapointment.

    8. The plot.
    I think the plot would be a 9-10 because it was well set out and none of it was compicated to understand, you could just go with it.

    9 The locations.
    I'd give this one a big 10 because the scenes in the bahamas were great, and also the scene where Daniel (Bond) was chasing Sebastian (Mollako) in the building site.

    10 chases and escapes.
    I'd give this one a nother 10 because he survived a hell of alot of beating and painful torture acts but he still made it.

    The total for Casino Royale is 91/100

    Casino Royale

    1. Daniel Craig. Seemed uncomfortable in the role, not as suave as the others but still added a presence. 6.5/10

    2. CR Pretitles. No gunbarrel, starts off a bit odd, but the film noir was interesting. Still, weird. 6.5/10

    3 Titles Sequence and "You Know my Name" - I hate this song with a fiery passion probably more than anyone here, and the titles were cartoony, unmemorable and horrible all around. 1/10

    4. Bond girls. Eva Green, Caterina Murino, Ivanka Millicevic. Eva Green, once again, looks beautiful sometimes and absolutely frightening in others, Caterina Murino was there for 2 seconds but was okay while there, still great to look at, but awkward on the horse (she's no Jenny Flex ;)) and Ivanka Millicevic was wasted to the point I forgot all about her. So... 5/10

    5. Le Chiffre - Who? I'm sorry, I forgot. He bleeds tears and looks ****ed off. 2.5/10

    6. M - Hypocrite 3/10
    Obanno - Boring and there for 2 seconds 2/10
    White - Not threatening 3.5/10
    Le Chiffre's Moop Brigade - 2/10
    Mathis - 7/10

    Overall: 3.5/10

    7. The car was nice, but totally underused. 6/10

    8. Cards, the lady was mean, something about Uganda, SPECTRE connection? Wait, I'm sorry, there really wasn't one. 4/10

    9 All beautiful, the only part of the movie I liked best. 8.5/10

    10 Chases and Escapes - None stand out, particularly since the whole airport chase seemed like it tried to compile the AVTAK firetruck chase, TLD Impostor 00 Military Truck thing and the LTK tanker truck into one big extravaganza. Then Bond flips the car. Not the best ever. 5/10

    Casino Royale's score from JFF - 48.5/100

    An F for Failure, IMO, I'll try to stay active in the thread and rate the OTHER movies as well.

    GoldenEye

    1. Pierce Brosnan- The man makes it seem like he's been playing Bond this whole time (instead of Dalton) and it really shows how charming he is. 10/10

    2. I don't care what you all say, the techno gunbarrel kicks @$$ and this pretitles sequence is one of the best ever. 10/10

    3 Titles Sequence and "GoldenEye" - Trying to get a classic feel with Tina Turner crooning out the haunting GoldenEye theme with supreme titles.
    10/10

    4. Bond girls are Natalya Simonova. Natalya is the best Bond girl to ever walk the screen, not only is she drop dead gorgeous but she's smart and intelligent and is a Bond equal without being annoyingly so. 10/10

    5. Alec Trevelyan - A former 00, he essentially knows Bond's strengths and weaknesses and could use them against him. Incredibly vile and very physical. 10/10

    6. M - Awesome new direction that was ruined in Casino Royale. 9/10
    Xenia Onatopp - More like Xenia Over-the-Top! She was amazingly wicked and amazingly sexy at the same time. (Especially in the Jungle and during the car race) 10/10
    General Ouromov - An interesting character and a figure from Bond's past. Also a drunkard! 8.5/10
    Boris Grishenko - Computer nerd who could arguably be the most dangerous person in the world. 9/10
    Q - Q is back and he's doing well! 8/10
    Moneypenny - Samantha Bond in her first (and best) Bond outing. 9/10
    Jack Wade - An ally, a funny American influence. 8.5/10
    Valentin Zukovsky - I was genuinely sad when his character died in TWINE and he made a memorable impact on me. Also, I love the deleted scene in which he deals with the Pakistani man, priceless! 9.5/10

    Overall: 9/10

    7. Again the car was underused but to see the return of the DB5 was a treat! 8/10

    8. Alec uses the GoldenEye sattelite to send England into financial ruin by erasing all the records. Who cares about the plotholes! The movie is amazing! 10/10

    9 Russia, finally! Monte Carlo and Cuba were also memorable locations. 10/10

    10 Chases and Escapes - The Xenia race, the Archives sequence, tank drive in St. Petersburg, the cradle fight, the Xenia fight, all of these are AMAZING. 10/10

    97.5/100

    There's still room for improvement but GoldenEye is definitely the Best Bond movie ever made EVER!

    Interesting. Since this is my 3000th post {[] I thought about doing a post on my favourite Bond film. :D My favourite Bond film is GF so I'll be ranking this Connery masterpiece.

    6)Side kicks and extra cast: Well GF doesn't really have any side kicks. It does have a brilliant henchman in Oddjob. He was arguably one of the finest henchman in the history of cinema. His bowler hat will forever be a part of Bondian legend. 10/10

    7)Gadgets: The Aston Martin with ejector seat. Perhaps the coolest car in the history of cinema. 10/10

    8)Plot: I adore GF's plot and I consider it to be the finest in the series. The idea of blowing up Fort Knox in order to increase the worth of one's gold supply is IMO pure genius. 10/10

    9)Locations:This category is an interesting one as GF really doesn't qualify for this. It doesn't have wonderful locations but that's because it doesn't require great locations such as volcanoes, mountains or islands. I'll give GF 10/10 as its locations perfectly fit the plot.

    10)Chases and escapes: GF has among the greatest chases and escapes in the entire series. In terms of chases, there were that terrific chase in the woods which included the use of the ejector seat. There was also the road chase involving Tilly. As for escapes, there was the escape from the laser and the escape from the cell. All of these were absolutely superb. 10/10

    I'll have a go at this, I will rate TWINE, one of my favourite Bond films.

    1. James Bond

    Pierce Brosnan at his finest; unquestionably his best Bond outing. 10/10

    2. PTS

    Energetic, action-packed and hilarious. The fight in the bankers' office is expertly staged, and the boat chase down the Thames must rank with the most memorable of Bond sequences. 10/10

    3. Music/Title Sequence

    Pretty ordinary Bond title sequence, and the title song by Garbage is OK. 7/10

    4. Bond girls

    Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards both make for excellent additions to the canon of Bond beauties, and Marceau delivers a top-notch performance. 9.5/10

    5. Villains

    Robert Carlyle, cold menace personified; one of the more memorable Bond villains.

    However, Goldie's "Mr. Bullion" seems more like comic relief and not suited to a villainous part.
    9/10

    6. Supporting cast

    Solid supporting cast: Sophie Marceau, Denise Richards, Robert Carlyle, Robbie Coltrane, Judi Dench and Desmond Llewelyn (in his final Bond film as Q). Director Michael Apted really had these actors putting their whole energies into their characters, and it pays off.

    I really didn't care for John Cleese, and maybe they should have given Serena Scott Thomas more screen time. Oh well... 9.5/10

    7. Gadgets

    Q's fishing boat - wonderful! :D
    BMW - nice, but a shame it was destroyed. 8-)
    Bagpipes/machine gun/flamethrower - very handy. :007)
    X-Ray glasses - cool. B-)
    Inflatable ski jacket - practical. :)
    8/10

    8. Plot

    Surprisingly mature Bond film, with rich performances and down-to-Earth story (with a twist, no less ;) ). 9.5/10

    9. Locations

    Not bad; the Middle East/Europe/Asia region, but its really the story and characters which you pay attention to in this movie. 6.5/10

    10. Action sequences

    Very energetic and thrilling. Its clear this is a Bond movie, all the elements are there, and you are cheering for Bond all the way. 10/10

    Total Score: 89/100

    Surprising; I would have rated it higher.

    On a side note, maybe one of these categories (maybe Villains) can be replaced by Direction; something must be said about that.

    This is not a very good way to rank the films. It's contrived and formulaic. Each Bond film should stand on its own in evaluation, not in comparison to others.

    I like it.

    Film Ranking: AVTAK

    1. Bond - Roger Moore, he's getting older but it adds a whole new dimension to the Bond universe as the world-weary spy who can still come out in the end to save the day. 9.5/10

    2. Pre-Title Sequence is very well done, and it even shows a little bit into the life of a fellow 00, showing that you can still have a family. Also, the ski/snowmobile/snowboarding sequence was wonderful and while Cali Girls isn't the best song, maybe it was foreshadowing to Stacey Sutton. I also like the iceberg boat. 9/10

    3 'A View to a Kill' by Duran Duran and the titles. Okay, AVTAK is the best song that ever existed in the history of Bond EVER and the titles reflect the decade. 10/10

    4. Stacey Sutton, Pola Ivanova. Stacey, as I said is underrated, she's not supposed to be your secret agent, kung fu master woman, she's your average American working woman who ran into trouble when Zorin came into her life. Very intelligent and not afraid to fight, but not very good at it because she's not trained! Pola is an interesting aside, and bothered me less as I watch the movie more. 9/10

    5. Max Zorin - Best Bond Villain EVER! He is so deliciously evil. While he dresses conservatively and seems like a businessman, that couldn't be further from the truth. He is a grade A psychopath who is cold, ruthless and vile. He leaves his own girlfriend to drown! And the glee he takes while killing the miners is sick! Also laughing at his death! NUTS! 10/10

    6 May Day - An over-the-top, outlandish and fun to watch Grace Jones is a wonderful henchwoman! 10/10
    Jenny Flex - She's Jenny Flex. 10/10
    Pan Ho - She's Pan Ho. 8/10
    M - Robert Brown's M is underappreciated, definitely. 9/10
    Mr. Howe - A jolly bureaucrat even in his death. 7/10
    Bob Conley - Obnoxious American oil tycoon. 7.5/10
    Scarpine - Professional, regal but a run-of-the-mill henchman. 8/10
    Q - Pretty good still. 9/10

    Overall: 9/10

    7. Gadgets. A mediocre commodity but some are fun, SNOOPER was underused, and there were many, however, none left a lasting impression. 8/10

    8. Many people believe this is a rehash of Goldfinger but hello, TWINE's was more of a ripoff. Anyway, I believe it's slightly better than Goldfinger's with a more exciting sequence during the mine than in Fort Knox. 9.5/10

    9 Locations - All are wonderful, San Francisco is okay, but Chantilly is one of the most beautiful to date. 9/10

    10 Chases and Escapes - The horse chase is a treat, the fight on the Golden Gate is exhilirating, the mine sequence is tense and amazing, chasing May Day while a bit jokey still was a fine job. 10/10

    JFF's Score: 93/100

    ok, i'll do one for Casino Royale,

    1. bond himself, if the actor did a good job in this particular movie. - 10, Daniel Craig is a top class bond, Cnb supporters eat your humble pie!

    2.pre title sequence. Every bond fan knows this is a very intergal part of the movie, - 10, The pre titles sequence was amazing, i love the way they incroporaated the gunbarrel!

    3 The music and the title sequence. Again everyone knows that the best music is big part of making the movie good. - 10, the movie version of YKMN was excellent, way better than the rock version, also the TS was great fr the movie!

    4. bond girls. enogh said. - 10, Eva Green is goregous! Simple As!

    5. villans again a good bad guy makes a better film. - 9, le chiffre scared the hell outta me lol! But at the same time i saw hm as a bit of a weak villain.

    6 side kicks and extra cast, sometimes a smaller part in a bond movie is very memorable. - 10, not sure if this counts but Felix Leiters part was really cool even though he only had a few lines.

    7. gadjets. What Q has for us definatly makes the film more fun. - 10, the lack of gadgets did it for me, just shws 007 don't need gadgets to survive!

    I finally saw the new casino royale film and will give my review
    1 bond himself, I think Daniel Craig was great he was all you wanted in a Bond rating a nine
    2 pre title was good but no gunbarel in the opening shot rating a seven
    3. the title and music, I loved the title sequence it was different and kind of cool with the cards the music was average a seven
    4. the girls, Vesper is great she is all you want in a bond girl. rating a eight
    5 villians Le chiffre I thought was an interesting character but not very scary a seven
    6 other cast all all I thought everyone was good rating 8
    7. gadjets well the phone and the defibilater were the only gadjets but I wouldnt take away from the score rating a seven
    8 plot very intriging It kept me guessing the whole movie rating an eight
    9 location It was very beautiful all the scenes and locales were real eye candy rating 9
    10escapes and chases all first rate a nine

    total 80 all and all a very good movie and a great first outing for Daniel Craig.

    Here's mine for CR.

    1. 10/10 - I thought Craig was a great Bond.
    2. 9/10 - Very good, a little short though IMHO.
    3. 7/10 - Don't really like the title song.
    4. 8/10 - Attractive but not memorable.
    5. 8/10 - Again not that memorable.
    6. 7/10 - Not too many side kicks etc
    7. 6/10 - Hardly any gadgets, which is not always a bad thing
    8. 9/10 - The most important part of any film.
    9. 8/10 - The locations were good.
    10. 10/10 - The madagascar chase was just awesome.

    So 82/100, seems quite a low score for a film I love, but as I said earlier something like a lack of gadgets I don't neccesarily see as a bad thing.

    Now for my fav bond film - Goldfinger.
    1. 10/10 - Connery is Bond.
    2. 10/10 - Class.
    3. 10/10 - Still a classic bond tune.
    4. 9/10 - Pussy Galore, nuff said.
    5. 10/10 - Best ever villan.
    6. 10/10 - Oddjob is still iconic.
    7. 10/10 - Just for the Aston.
    8. 9/10 - Clever idea.
    9. 8/10 - My fav part is actually the golf scenes
    10. 8/10 - One of the weaker parts for me.

    94/100 - Still a quality film which I love to watch and still makes me laugh.
