Ultimate Edition Question

I know that the UE dvd's have been remastered along with more bonus material. My question is, is there a BIG difference from the prior dvd's? I have several of the Special Edition dvd's and have no fault with them but was wondering if there is a vast difference in quality?

Major difference in picture quality and in sound. Mainly with the older movies.

I would recommend getting it, unless you are on a tight budget. ;)

    I have a question too...

    1) Are all the Bond films available in the Ultimate format? All I've seen so far are 2 volumes.

if it's the same as the US versions Volume 3 has From Russia With Love, On Her Majestys Secret Service, Live And Let Die, For Your Eyes Only and Goldeneye

Vloume 4 has Dr. No, You Only Live Twice, Moonraker, Octopussy and Tomorroe Never Dies

    Hope that helps.

Volume 4 looks makes me think the Ultimate Editions were put together like this...

"Well, we're done Volumes 1 through 3 -uh-oh, all the crap movies are left. I know, let's stick the very first Bond into the mix with them, so people feel better about having to buy these:)) leftovers."

Yesterday I got my Christmas present early (no prizes for guessing); today I watched two of the UEs, FRWL and GE. The picture and sound quality have been so much improved it's almost like watching them for the first time (slight hyperbole). I haven't worked my way through all the extras yet- so much to watch, so little time!

That's not far from the truth. Not exactly a stellar line up.

That's what I did. The only real dog in the bunch is "Live and Let Die" IMO. I've only watched FRWL so far and there is a HUGE difference with the past issue. It looks like it could have been filmed last week. And the extras are really cool as well, including a rather lengthy CBC interview with Fleming about Bond; a CBC radio program in which Fleming and his pal Raymond Chandler interview each other and discuss each other's work -- very engaging. I'd never heard Chandler speak before: he really is about as far from Philip Marlowe as you can get. There's also a very good documentary on the making of the movie. A rather troubled production, but for all the woes, the film is still, IMO, the quintessential "literary" Bond film. I think most people would say it's one of the best. I certainly do.
I'm anxious to see FYEO again, given that people tell me it's a more stripped down Bond (it's been so long since I've seen it, I forget) and I hope to get a new appreciation for Roger Moore. And of course, there's Goldeneye, which I'll have to watch again as well. By the time Brosnan took over the role I had tired a bit of Bond, so I didn't pay as much attention to his films as some of the others.
And of course OHMSS. I'm especially interested to see the extras on that one.
    Any, I think you'll enjoy No. 3

What happened to the Roger Moore commentaries? I though I read somewhere that Roger Moore was recording audio for commenaries.

I just watched From Russia with Love last night from Volume 3 and had to bump it up on my list of Bond films.

Box set number 3 is great!! FRWL and OHMSS were way better than I had remembered. Unfortunately, FYEO was not as good as I remembered. Although, Milina Havlok (sp?) is still one of the more beautiful Bond girl characters IMHO.

I just got all 4 volumes....so will have to figure out how to watch them. Should I watch in order of my favorites....or in Ian Fleming order.....sigh!!! Such a big decision....they are sitting unopened on the shelf staring at me. :s

^I'm going to watch them in order of theater release. I started today with Dr. No I'm guessing the next movie would be Thunderball ?

What are these Box Sets of the Moore era?

Is it simply all of the Moore Bond films?
  • s96024s96024 Posts: 1,519MI6 Agent
Think there talking about just the film boxsets. Not the actor specified boxsets. Too many boxsets.

    Yes.......too many boxsets!! :D

Besides the film boxsets, what are the actor boxsets?

There is a boxset for all the Brosnan films, one for the Connery films and one for the Moore films. As far as I know there is not a lazenby (for obvious reasons) and there is no Dalton, don't know if anything for these 2 actors is due to be released or not.

Not sure if these boxsets contain any other extras (information on the actors) or are just boxed differently.

The order would be FRWL, then GF, then TB. Then YOLT, OHMSS, then DAF ... For Connery movies (except OHMSS, of course)that is.

I picked up Volume 3 so I satisfied my Bond fix for the time being. I found Goldeneye to be enjoyable, but still not up to par with the classic Bond flicks IMO. Yes, there are tons of bonus materials to watch, even the turkey in the group, LALD, has some bonus features that sound interesting. A commentary by Roger Moore might enhance your viewing pleasure with this film. The sound quality is impressive, but I have yet to watch FRWL to see how the color has been enhanced with the earlier films. Considering that you get 5 movies, all with double disks, the price seems well within reason. However, I'm not impressed with the method of their madness with what is included in the boxed sets.

Many thanks highhopes. I think FRWL will be watched Wednesday after work.
