A BMW that can be remotely-driven by the use of a simple touchpad at extremely high speeds

    Unacceptable
An Aston Martin that can become invisible through the use of fiberoptics.
    I completely agree.

    Another from me:
I find it acceptable that Bond would rarely meet a woman with an ordinary name; I find it unacceptable that Bond would 'allow' himself to be played by someone he loved/slept with in each of the past three films.

I don't know why everyone gets so hung up about the invisible aston. There are so many things even more unbelievable which happen that you could choose. As long as it is something which could practically be possible in the future I am not that bothered.

It's not so much about whether something is possible (or will be). The point of the thread is to explore some of the bizarre mental 'blocks' poeple have about somethings as opposed to others. People deal with remote control objects everyday...from TV remotes to RC toys...what we see on the Bond movie screen is just an exaggerated use of that. No one deals with 'invisibility cloaks' on a daily basis. Perhaps if DAD had started with something smaller and simpler like a homing device that turned 'invisible' audiences might have had more acceptance for it.

I think remote control real life cars is a tad different from a normal RC toy. Did you see the remote control full size cars on top gear?. Also I would love to have some of that special metal which doesn't even scratch when shot at or hit with iron bars. Also I'd like a cutting disc which would come out of the bonnet and automatically know which height to be at to cut annoying cables crossing the roads. Also I wold love to see someone who could drive a car like that using a 2" screen and a touchpad. I know it's not whether or not it will be possible. It's just the fact that everyone just picks the invisible aston everytime. It's like it's the most ridiculous thing that has ever happened in a bond film. Come on PB drove of a mountain somehow flew into a small plane and managed to regain control. For me that is never ever going to be possible, so is more of an issue than an invisble car. I understand people probably choose the aston because it is more current in their minds. I am a facts man though. I can't understand how people can believe in a god, yet they refuse to believe aliens could exist.

Aw, come on, lighten up. This thread is kind of like the "Eccentric Opinions" thread -- no answer needs to be more plausible than any other. Smoke 13's whole point in starting the thread was that we as Bond fans are often totally illogical in what we consider acceptable vs. unacceptable, so being a "facts man" and debating the merits of a certain Bond gadget is missing the spirit entirely.

    Here's another from me:

-- Tires screeching on a gravel road (DN) is acceptable; tires screeching on the sand (OHMSS) is unacceptable.

My major problem with the invisible car in DAD was that I wasn't convinced that in the reality that was DAD such a car could exist. When I see Superman I am convinced that a man can fly; when I see Die Hard I am convinced that a man can single-handedly defeat 12 terrorists; when I see GF I am convinced that a man can possess a hat which is capable of killing people. But I'll never believe in the invisible car in DAD, regardless of how plausible it may or may not be in real life.

My major problem with having the invisible car in DAD was where do you go next? Practically anything and everything can become invisible after that. You could end up looking at a blank screen for two hours. I think there may well be one or two people around here who would prefer to look at a blank screen for two hours instead of DAD. :D

Well, if MR hadn't yet been filmed, you could go into outer space. ;)

Good one, Dan. We can take it a step further:

Acceptable That Bond will not jump in the sack with Bibi in FYEO

Unacceptable that he does not even attempt to jump in the sack with Jenny Flex in AVTAK.

Having a big, fat, flabby body gaurd like Whisper is completely acceptable even though he is probably incable of hurting anybody.

Having a fit female femme fatale that wraps her legs around you and squeezes you to death like a boa contrictor is completely unacceptable -although it does look like fun :D

I find Mayday's switch of allegiance unacceptable. Suprised a guy who drops businessmen from blimps is unfaithful? A lady who throws her boyfriend around like a throw doll no less.

I find the fact that she could lift both Roger and the bomb acceptable. Probably had room for Sean, George, and Timothy on that platform.

I find the odd increase to the film rates during a car chase for the 60's era Bonds acceptable.

However, I find the crazy looking sea scape flying by at what? about 900 mph?? and seeing Bond grab the wheel to what looks like an out of control boating video game at the end of Thunderball completely unacceptable.

Sorry Thunderball fans but that was truly awful.

In my bond films I find an explosive gun activated by touching a tiny button in my glasses acceptable(TWINE), but seeing Bond throwing a gun at someone and knocking them over unacceptable (CR).

My contribution. More to come i'm sure.
  • Dan SameDan Same Victoria, AustraliaPosts: 6,054MI6 Agent
I find it acceptable that Bond would drive a motorcycle over a cliff and be able to climb into a plane; I find it unacceptable that a guy Bond is chasing (in the first chase scene in CR) would be able to leapfrog over a table (?) and not fall onto his face. That entire sequence was terrific, but there was just that one moment which IMO took things a bit too far.

You need to watch those guys in action. If you think that is unbelievable you should see some of the other stuff they can do.

Best bits I liked was when he jumped into the open lift shaft bounced of the side and landed on the floor below. Also when he jumped through the small window above the door, then bond smashes threw the wall. Perfect comparison.

So the bomb maker is also one of these jumping experts on the side? :o

Again, just like with the invisible car, wether it's plausible or not is irrelevant IMO. It just didn't seem real to me.

Wheras Bond is an expert marksman. He can fly planes, helicopters, he can bungee jump, he can fly fighter jets, he can drive remote control cars, ride a horse. e.t.c e.t.c.

But a bloke riding of a cliff and flying into a plane does seem real. Even though when he enters the plane it looks ridiculous. That's probably in the top 10 most ridiculous scenes in a bond film for me. I hate to seem argumentative but I'm trying to see the logic.

    Absolutely. :D I have no problem with that. He's a super-agent. I would expect nothing less. ;)

The plane scene may have been ridiculous but not to the point where it affected my enjoyment of the film. I love it. Ridiculous: maybe, but a brilliant moment: definitely. :D

There isn't really any logic here. This thread is about what we can and can't accept irrespective of logic. However, if you insist; CR presents itself as a 'realistic' film. Yet there were elements which came across to me as extremely unrealistic. The forward jump over the table was one such element.

I find all of Bond's expertise acceptable even though it does stretch credibility at times.

However, Dan. I find it totally unacceptable that Roger Moore is only your third favourite ranking ranked listed Bond. :D

    Agreed. :D

In my defence, I love him. I think he was an awesome Bond who wasn't campy or self-parodic, took himself quite seriously, was just as ruthless as anyone else, was quite tough and was also very, very suave. I really love him. I just prefer Connery and Brosnan. An analogy would be that saphires are extremely expensive. It just so happens that diamonds and gold are worth more. :D

Here's one from me: I find it acceptable that the Bond series offers something for everyone; I find it unacceptable that MNL would actually think that anybody other Moore could have done LALD. X-( I mean, the crocodile scene was perfect for Moore.

    Roger a sapphire? I suppose I'll let you off, Dan. :p :D

Regarding LALD. In my defence, I suggested the other Bond actor's as proof that I would still love the film even if Roger was not in it, he's the icing on the cake. And that whole sequence at the crocodile farm is wonderful, not just the part where Bond steps over the crocodiles backs.

Ok, lets go with the main topic again:

I found acceptable that Bond needs help to disarm a nuclear bomb. i find unacceptable that he is a math genius to have the answer so quickly in a distance calculation. (both in TWINE)
