As a teenager I became aware of Mike Oldfield through the classic Tubular Bells album. But it is a song called On Horseback from the Ommadawn album that I treasure the most. It stuck in my head at the time and through the years it has grown to mean sunny days, the innocence of youth and happy times rather than anything to do with horses.
Reminds me of a Glasgow that was still a bit No Mean City when I studied there...a bohemian, arty, trendy city with a very rough edge and a layer of dust, with some seriously cool hangouts that were only 'in the know', before it began to take itself far too seriously. Oh, and also a pretty good running song
I was a big fan of Simple Minds in the 1980's. I have the albums New Gold Dream, Sparkle In The Rain and Street Fighting Years. Lot's of great music and difficult to choose a favourite. I am going for the title song Street Fighting Years.
It's Oasis' Live Forever. Now I skipped thru the memoirs of their drummer, sacked after just one album, who played on this definitive song. Very sour about some aspects, Noel comes across as a real nasty piece of work. But in the video, the uplifting aspect of the song is undermined by showing them giving the drummer a mock burial.
WTF? Did the drummer, Andy Carroll I think, go along with this, knowing he's being kicked out? Or was it prophetic? Or did they get a stand-in to play him?
Otherwise it's a very nasty video, imagine if the Beatles did a video or song mocking poor old Pete Best. Like doing Yesterday and having Pete Best lookalike looking sad or something.
I first heard this stunning piece of music when it featured in a BBC programme regarding 25 years of spaceflight. It played alongside the sped up image taken from an Apollo orbiter as the lander approached it with the cratered moon's surface in the background. Absolutely stunning sound and image combined. The song is called An Ending (Ascent) from Brian Eno and has been quite a regular on TV shows over the years.

I listened to Jess Mills cover a few times and it did grow on me, Lexi. A respectable cover version, and I mean it. Didn't think much of the video though.
The Cure's version is one of my all time faves.

Agreed, a hardly inspired video, but a great remix. Glad you liked it... been looking for it for ages!
I love tracks that are familiar yet have their own spin.... just like a song from The Voice.... let me see if I can find it... hang on...
I posted the opening title sequence to Simon Schama's A History of Britain in the Favourite TV Show Theme topic earlier. Those of you who are familiar with the series will probably remember the tune. But you may not know that it is called Immortal: (Cathedral at the Edge of the World). And here it is in it's FULL glory.
A14 heading away from Cambridge, 23 years old, gloriously warm summers day, in my then bright red G-reg Saab 900 Turbo, windows and sunroof open, realising I was in love with the girl sat next to me who I'd spent the weekend with at my brother's...
Sadly, a few months later, the car was killed by a half blind 83 year old woman at a crossroads, and 4 years later, I realised I probably loved the car more than the girl. Narrow escape. From both.
Okay, a bit of a list, so no links...Amy Winehouse - back to black, Jessie J - price tag, Tom Jones - What's new pussy cat and Sex bomb, and Will.i.am - Tonight's gonna be a good night...educating my 6 year old on the judges of The Voice U.K. along with some artists who've inspired...important stuff!

I am generally not a fan of hard rock/heavy metal music. There are rare exceptions and one of them is this fabulous cover song of Joni Mitchell's This Flight Tonight by Nazareth.
This was one of those songs that stuck in my head and grew on me over the years, but it was basically just the chorus. Thanks to You Tube I can now enjoy it in full.
Sad Cafe were one of those groups who had hit records and were well known (in the UK at least) but perhaps did not have the success they deserved. 'Every Day Hurts' was their biggest single hit but I have always preferred their more minor hits 'My Oh My', 'Strange Little Girl' and especially 'Nothing Left Toulouse'. For me, a great song.
I have always been a fan of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. I remember seeing it at the cinema with my brother when I was a young boy. My brother is/was a bigger fan, he bought the soundtrack album at the time. One track immediately stood out when I first heard it, Gyorgi Ligeti's Requiem. It sounded weird, yet it instantly gripped me. Here is a great live performance by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
I was so impressed with Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene 4 single that I bought the album off the back of it, something I have done on only a handful of occasions. The album is a real gem. Oxygene 1 gets to me on an emotional level in a way very few pieces of music ever have. Truly epic.
I am not much into country music, and in fact dislike most of it, but as with all genres of music, I enjoy the individuals that have stood out as the best of the best. With that, I have a great love for Johnny Cash's music. I also heard this cover of Cash's 'Walk The Line' years ago in a Levi's commercial and never forgot it.
This is one of those songs that was stuck in my head for many years. Well, at least part of it. I found it more difficult to find on You Tube than most, mainly because I thought the song was sung by Foreigner and I only had a vague idea of what the title might be. All's well that ends well.
I really enjoy a lot of music from Dire Straits. This includes, Skateaway, Brothers In Arms, Money For Nothing, and Calling Elvis. But Private Investigations is a cut above, this song is a real gem.

Great Track... definately my fav song on Love Over Gold Although Telegraph road was a very close second B-)
As an aside, I think I wore my Brother In Arms casette out , I played it so much... (crickey, that shows my age ) )
Currently listening to various songs by The Script - educating my son on the Judges from The Voice...
But this one will always resonate the most... Break Even
