goldeneye mine

just picked up a Saltek joystick off ebay for a song, as im sure you know, these were used to make the mines in Goldeneye, i know a few people on here have got the finished product complete with LED'S etc, just wanted to ask a couple of things before i get the drill out, are the xyz switches on the side removed at all or just left in place, would it have been magnetic, or keep the suckers, anyone know anything about the electronics that were used to strobe the LED's ???? thanks for any help offered.

Suckers get removed and if you want to get fancy you can place a good strong flat magnet on te back...switches also get removed as you can see in the side pic of mine...

thanks for that, took a couple of screen grabs from the DVD, but there not too clear. think ive found a very close red centre button from RS components, they have some pretty close LED's too with the black shroud.

To build the chasing LEDs, you can get a little kit desgined to teach circuitry and soldering from most larger electronics shops. I used this one:

    http://www.bakatronics.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=344

Ommitting the extra diodes doesn't affect the performance; I found this to be actually less expensive than sourcing the components separately, etc. in order to build a board with only six.

I remember Steve Dymzo (SDS Studios) telling me in very conspiratorial tones that the mines were made from joysticks and to please not tell anyone. Over the years, I thought I knew some kind of secret and if I could source them, would have something no one else did. In the last couple of years, though, I've realized that there really isn't any one who doesn't know this!

thats quite a funny story :)) its amazing what sort of daily objects are used to make these screen props, a bit like those old flashguns that were used to make the original lightsabre's in star wars, now they go for a bomb if you can find them.

Anyone interested in a "working mine," please PM me. I have the parts for 12 and if I knew there was an interest, might actually build them! (Again, I got the joysticks before I knew everyone else was aware of them; once I realized these really weren't anything special, I set the project aside.)

I'm so sorry, but I'm totally going blank here. I've seen GoldenEye probably 35 times. Which mines are you talking about? As soon as you tell me, I probably go: 'Duh!'

Oh, and this is my GoldenEye shelf:

    geshelf.jpg

I got some other GoldenEye stuff too, but this is the shelf that is totally devoted to GoldenEye.

Thanks, I thought of mines, like a coal mine or what you had in the beginning of DAF. I kept on trying to figure out what "mine" he was in!!! LOL That makes sense now. I always called them explosives, but English is my second language!

And then the discussion about the joystick... I was trying to figure out if Borris was using one or so!!!

In regards to the joysticks, how much is reasonable to pay for one? I've found one close by for around 20 bucks (australian) including the 6 dollars postage, but was wondering if there's somewhere I can find it cheaper? How rare are these joysticks?

Also, what exactly goes into making them into mines?

if and when you find them (ive come across 3 in the past week on ebay) you can pick them up for a song, the price you stated sounds ok.
as to what goes into one, this is the first one im making so im no expert but the following links the components i think look pretty close,

for the red centre button/switch :-

    http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search2/browse.jsp?N=500015&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=vaq&Ntx=&_requestid=596578

for the 6 LED's with the black shroud :-

    http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search2/browse.jsp?N=500015&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=prominent+led&Ntx=&_requestid=138390

for the LED chaser circuit (thanks PoorMansJB) :-

    http://www.bakatronics.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=344

some olive drab model spray paint, a 9v battery and lead.

forget that switch in the link, it DOESNT FIT :'(

so far so good, theres a very kind gentleman in Canada whos going to build me a few LED flasher units complete with a sound chip :D

though i seem to be having a real headache finding the correct type of push on push off switch, any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated, or if anyone who owns one of these mines could let me know if theres a model/serial number on the switch that would be great {[]

thanks I found a few, but one of the models has an extra little bit of molded trim on the top and some of them have switches on the sides. As far as I can see the SAITEK Mega Grip III MX-230 is the one to get. I found one on ebay in Austria, but I can't tell if the guy takes paypal. Sent him a message, hopefully he speaks english.
