Vesper had the key?

In the scene where Vesper is trapped in the elevator, she uses a key to lock herself in while Bond tries to get her out.

Doesn't this mean that she could've gotten out if she wanted to? If so, wouldn't this change the entire plot?

Or am I just totally off here?

Bond's women have somewhat been fatal throughout the series. With Paris Carver, Aki, The Masterson sisters, Solange and Vesper.....it's a bad move killing off these beauties! ;)

But doesn't this mean that she was never held hostage in the first place?

That's exactly what it means. She's a double agent, that's why she betrays Bond. She can't deal with it when she falls in love with him so she tops herself. I recommend u read the book - it makes things become clearer! ;)

No, she betrayed Bond, so she killed herself. And Bond was right there and eventually pulled her out, so its not like she could sneak out later undetected.

Just watching CR again last night, this scene hit me harder than anything else in the movie. It seems that Vesper goes through a wide range of emotions all within the time that Bond is trying to get her out of the elevator and the time she dies. She shows a world of hurt and anguish within a few moments, mainly through her eyes. I thought this was a very haunting scene that has really stuck with me after the viewing. Very well done.

In the source novel, she offs herself mainly out of guilt for being a double, and Bond's torture. Additionally theres some funny dude with an eye patch, but she does suicide.

In the movie, the shot that creeped me out is where she's underwater and not moving, just watching Bond attempt to save her.

Although it is sad they die but people like Vesper have to die because Bond loves them and if they lived there couldn't be any more Bond girls. I think he was more sad with Vesper's death the Tracy's.

Yep, seems reasonable) And MI6 doesn't lose the best agent) The scene is well done - loved it too...As a guy in the cinema said aloud - even 007 became Bond, JAmes Bond because of a girl...

killing these beauties... is it a bad move? well, it doesn't matter at all. have you seen Mrs. Adams (TMWTGG) and Octopussy (O)? The same woman in two movies... in first she was killed in the second... first lady, if I may say so. ;)

If they were not killed of we wouldn't get any replacements. Which would be a worse thing.

I'm a little suprised you're not trying to pass off that she's a mermaid, JFF. Althought, that would be utterly cool.

Having recently re-watched the film after a long sabbatical (it's not one of the films that I find very entertaining) the key issue seemed incredibly out of place. Vesper was screaming and rattling the doors of the elevator as Bond dashed in. Gettler and his henchman were nowhere around. Seeing as Gettler just had a gun to her head, and she most likely didn't like the idea of facing Bond again, it seems to me she had no reason to stick around, especially with all of the bullets whizzing around. I know that the key element was truly only a visual cue that communicated that Vesper was committing suicide, but there was absolutely no reason for her to be in the elevator in the first place. What we she thinking? Maybe I'll hole up in here in case the building sinks and I can drown unpleasantly before Gettler's goons come back to finish me off? Vesper delivered the money. There was no reason for her to be hanging out in the elevator pretending to be trapped.
