It may not be an Oscar, but as you can read on this site, Daniel Craig has won Best Actor at the Evening Standard British Films Awards for playing Bond in Casino Royale. Good job, Dan, and here's wishing you best of luck at the BAFTAs! {[]

Wonderfull news Hardyboy, and, besides, our "M" Judi Dench, is the best actress prize, she was awarded for her portrayal of a predatory schoolteacher in "Notes on a Scandal".
She won against Helen Mirren, who is an Academy Awards favorite for her turn as Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen" !!!

Winning the Evening Standard British Films Best Actor Award is very creditable indeed.

{[] Terrific. It's nice to see someone recognize the difficulty of successfully re-inventing a character everyone feels they already know. I hope the British Oscars follow suit.

The British Oscars roughly translates on to the BAFTAs I guess?

Side note: that statue is really...looks like something your grandmother would pick up at the drugstore and keep on the windowsill, next to the glass unicorns and ceramic kittens...oh well, comes with the territory I guess.

That's Eros- used as the logo of the Evening Standard and most familiar from his perch in Trafalgar Square.

Far be it for a Yank to correct a Brit on this subject, but isn't the Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus?

    What's this?

A Bond performance winning an award? Shocking!

    Fantastic news!

To all those cultural eggheads at the, let's
say, New Yorker who determine what constitutes artistic credibility I have one thing to say: pay closer attention to pop culture.

There is excellence to be found in a Bond film...if one were to first admit that excellence CAN be found in a Bond film.

I'm still staggered by the fact that a 007 performance has won an award. FINALLY someone has realized that playing Bond is a very tricky bit of acting business, and when handled well should be applauded without reservations.

Congrats to Craig and to the producers for making a lot of people eat humble pie,

Every Bond fan in the world will feel a touch of pride when he hears the news.

    "Yes...considerably."

Good point- no idea where my head was. I had Piccadilly in my mind but the wrong words came out! :D

I just did a bit of quick research in regards to the Evening Standard British Film Awards. Along with the BAFTA's and British Independent Film Awards, the ESBFA's are one of the most important in the UK.

It should be noted that Daniel Craig's Best Actor Award was not a Bond first. Live And Let Die won the Best Film Award in 1974.

That's interesting, MNL. I did not know that about LALD. In a way, both CR and LALD are similar in that they took conscious effort to make the films different from previous Bond outings. Admittedly, neither film is a favorite of mine, but it's nice to see that people are willing to turn their heads for a second glance when things aren't what they expected. It's definitely a sign of a successful project.

IMO, Bond actors (and other Bond film contributors) are incredibly skilled people in their craft...with a few disappointing exceptions. It's a shame that people fail to see the skill involved in the other films because they think that it's formulaic and repetitive.
