While M was expecting his top agent to fly to Istanbul, 007 was instead splashing around in the water, poisoning the landscape with contraband and creating new orifices in many a thug of the evil ilk.

While some speculation goes to presume that the next installment of Bond following LTK would have been Property of a Lady, does anyone know if the Istanbul mission was just a quick excuse for M to get mad at Bond for not following orders, or could it actually have been a new serious development in some unseen megalomaniac hellbent on making the Earth his bitch?

But then again, Dalton's Bond never really achieved anything of real great importance. He soured two arms trade deals and wrecked two drug trafficking ploys. He really just made it easier for all the others out there moving weapons and controlled substances.

The Dalton movies featured (sort of) believable missions, preparing the ground for CR. Perhaps he made it easier for other weapons/drugs smuggelers, but that argument is weak. Should Bond do a mission where he stopped all waepons/drug smuggelers at ones, and perhaps forever too? Moonraker would seem almost realistic in comparison!

I never thought my post would be taken as a slap against Dalton or a snark at the magnitude of his missions. ;% I was really asking if there was anything to the quip about Istanbul. Would that have really been his next assignment or was it just scripted and thus an excuse for M to be upset?
