AJB Summit: Loeffelholz & Tee Hee

On the 'Snowed In' thread a couple of days ago, I learnt that Tee Hee currently lives in the same town as me---in fact, he's not far away at all, as the crow flies; probably less than three miles...!
As I write this, Tee Hee and myself are planning to meet this afternoon...perhaps head to the local Barnes and Noble for coffee, Bond book perusal and high-level 007 conversation B-)
Tee Hee has said that he has a digital camera...so with any luck we'll record this historic AJB event and have pictures to show later on...pro-Craiger meets anti-Craiger...
Stay tuned! :007)

Have a good time guys but bring your own Charmin - preferably two-ply. ;%

Or, pro-Moorer meets anti-Moorer...
I hope your meeting goes very well. The prospect of seeing what you and Tee Hee actually look like is quite frightening.
Now was that necessary? )
No pictures taken of the event, but...with CR newly-arrived at the 'second run' theatre in town, we're planning to see it sometime in the next week or two, with Loeff Jr. and Loeff III also in possible attendance, so perhaps then...
It's the first time either of us had met someone 'in person' from the internet, so it was understandably an unusual experience in that regard. Knowing I was meeting a Chicago native, I wore my St. Louis Cardinals (2006 World Champions ) dugout jacket...but he said he wasn't a baseball fan Curses! So much for my attempt to place him at a psychological disadvantage...
In all seriousness, it was a most interesting and pleasant conversation. We discussed our first experiences with Bond movies, talked about CR (naturally)...and debated the relative merits of OP and NSNA---not too difficult to figure out who came down on which side...I was forced to concede his point that Moore's film beat Connery's at the box office back in '83 X-( :v
Naturally, one brings expectations to a meeting like this: What will he look like? How will he compare to the person with whom I've been corresponding, off and on, for more than a year? Tee Hee is...young---to me, because, at 44, I find many people that way ) ...but every bit the Bond scholar I expected---albeit misguided about Moore & OP :v
I suspect he was shocked by how much grey hair I have---but, thankfully, he hid it well
Tee Hee, thanks for the meeting. Let's do it again sometime {[]

I'm dying to know
How did you guys recognize each other? Did you each decide to hold a Martini? Wear a tux?
I think we just forgot ;% Plus it would have been awkward, getting someone in Barnes and Noble to take the picture |) ...like I said, we're probably going to catch CR in the near future---and Loeff Jr. can take the snap...
I met Tee Hee outside his dorm---in the middle of the frozen Midwestern tundra of the UIS campus---I told him I'd be wearing a Cardinal jacket; it was all suitably 'cloak and dagger' )

Oh, naturally He and Loeff III are far more photogenic than the old man

Despite poor direction from me, Loeffelholz found his way to my dorm and we began our journey together. With Bond tunes blasting on the radio, we immediately felt comfortable with each other. The first thing I noticed about him was indeed his head of grey. I realised immediately that I had just seen firsthand the adverse effects of the Roger Moore Era on a "Flemingist." "It must have been a long 12 years for him," I said to myself. He may now appreciate that I learned a thing or two about being a gentleman from Roger Moore, so accordingly I didn't make it obvious that I noticed he was aging.
Introductions commenced, touching base on family life and occupation (or in my case education). At the Starbucks inside Barnes and Noble, Loeffelholz ordered his coffree much like Sean Connery did in FRWL: "Coffee, very black." I must have been showing my youth when I ordered a grande "Double Chocolate Chip" with whipped cream. After a slight discrepancy over who would pick up the tab, we each paid our own way and sat down for some one on one Bond debate.
The converation was absolutely riveting. We discussed how Bond came to be a part of our lives and how we came to stumble upon AJB. We talked about our AJB friends of present, and those who sadly have gone. We discussed our personal favorites (Bonds, girls, etc.), our not-so personal favorites, and the "What if?" questions that surface here frequently on the board.
The age old rivalry (Connery vs. Moore) was certainly there, but I think it made for far more interesting discussion. The debate found its focus on the year 1983, "Never Say Never Again" vs. "Octopussy." It should be obvious who took who's side, but by the time it was over, citing box office results, I think it was clear who the victor was! :v
The topic of CR was of course an unescapable one. By the time it was over, I think Loeffelholz realized he may have been a bit quick to label me as an "Anti-Craigger." We discussed the reboot (my biggest issue involving CR) and our favorite scenes.
The time just flew by. Luckily we had enough time to track down a copy of "Octopussy and The Living Daylights" for Loeffelholz's collection before we had to go. It may be to Rogue's surprise, but for the hour or so we spent in Barnes and Nobel, we were not once interrupted by a bowel movement. )
Loeffelholz dropped me off back at my dorm and we shook hands before saying our goodbyes. It was clear that we both had had a good time, so much so that we hope to do it again. CR has just started playing at a small local theatre, and we hope to one weekend go to see it together. It will be the fifth viewing for both of us. Like Loeff's has said, perhaps we will have some pictures then.
What did I learn about Loeffelholz? Well, he is just as much of an antagonist in real life as he is on the board. This can easily be seen in his flaunting of a St. Louis Cardinals jacket in front of a Chicago native. But just like his usual mind tricks, they fail to have a profound effect on me. Don't be quick to make judgements about Loeff's head of grey hair, he is a regular Cary Grant. Alright, I'll admit I may be being a little over-charitable here. ) But above all else, he is very much a gentleman, and very much a good driver too. Staring across at him from the opposite side of a table I was in a sense gazing into a crystal ball. In 20 years I will have reached his age on this day, and I know that in my fourties I will be just as much a Bond fan and a member of this site.
In summary, Loeffelholz is twice my age, twice as wise, but twice as misguided when in comes to the world of Bond. Although Loeffelholz admits that Roger Moore is indeed his least favorite Bond, he confesses that he still has an utmost respect for the man. As you can see, my sentiments on Roger Moore are already beginning to sink into old Loeffs, and I intend to drive em' down even further. By the time I am finished with him, I vow to all of you, he will be a carbon copy of me. He will be a Moore fan yet!
It is absolutely fascinating to me that two people of different ages and different backgrounds can be fastened together by a common interest, Commander James Bond agent Double-O-Seven. On AJB, I truly am among some of the world's best men and women.
Loeffelholz, thank you so much for driving and showing the utmost respect for a young "whipper snapper" like me. We should definitely get together again soon, whether it be to see CR or not. I suggest you get your stuff back together because I'm sure you would like another chance to make a convincing case for CR and against Roger Moore. Just face it, you're no match for Tee Hee. B-)
Here's to the start of what I hope to be a lasting friendship! {[]

OK, I've PM'ed my phone number.
Oh man, if I lived is Scotland I'd PM my number to. I love Hoegarden.
(PS - I'll have one for you, MM! )
Looking forward (hopefully) to seeing those pictures.
I like the idea of AJB summits: I look forward to more opposing camps being brought together for peace talks. Perhaps it could be like the start of YOLT, with Superado and Emtiem barking at one another beneath a geosedic dome, while Hardyboy shouts about his tracking station in Singapore in the middle

Very good, that. Very astute )
The check's in the mail, Tee Hee

Age and treachery will overcome youth and vigour, my young apprentice... :v

In the spirit of the moment, anyone who wants to get together in Manhattan (preferably for alcohol) need only PM me.
I even managed to get the old "Oops, no cash! ;%" excuse to work! ) (Seriously Barbel, the next time is completely on me :007))
I'm up for that - cocktails in the city that never sleeps - what's not to like? You'll have to send me a plane ticket first, mind
@merseytart
I liked the look on the landlady's face 8-) when you flashed the credit card- I half expected her to say "Oh arr, we don't hold with them new-fangled city ways here" )!
(Darts player stops mid-throw. Pianist stops mid-song. All conversation stops and all eyes turn as one...)
And I'll hold you to that one, M5, pint of Tennents please. {[]
Earlier this week, Loeffelholz and myself arranged to meet for our second official summit meeting. With the academic year quickly coming to a close, we wanted to squeeze in at least one more get-together before I return home for the summer. B-)
I was quite surprised that Loeffelholz made it to my dorm this time without directions. He must not have lost his memory...yet anyway . :v We greeted one another and shook hands before we embarked on our latest journey.
Where did we go this time?
Where else but: Hooters!
Where else would James Bond go if he wanted a bite to eat in the States? :007)
We arrived at Hooters, were seated, and then placed our orders. While waiting for our food to arrive, we immediately began to chat. We talked about a wide range of subjects, some of which we had discussed previously at our first meeting. Some new subjects included American politics, British TV, Bond 22, and the current lack of new discussion here on AJB.
Being our second meeting, we both were naturally much more comfortable with each other. After I finished my meal and Loeffelholz finished his three beers ( ), we each paid our own way and then got up from the table.
On our way out, we got a beautiful young lady to take our photograph, to commemorate the event. Honestly, we would have preferred that she be in the picture with us, but unfortunately the joint was just too busy to spare a waitress for even a few seconds.
[Drumroll] Here we are!
Loeffelholz must have known he was going to be photographed, for this time he arrived to the summit meeting cleanly-shaven. I take it he wanted to look his very best and try his hardest to hide all that gray. Look at him all you want ladies, but unfortunately for you this hot piece of man candy is happily married. )
They say you can tell a lot about a person by the way they dress. Well, based on the T-shirt he was wearing today, I can only assume that Loeffelholz hates authority, because we here at AJB all know that "there are no cops in Rome." )
Finally, Loeffelholz dropped me off at my dorm and we said our farewells, thus concluding another successful summit meeting.
As I only have two weeks of school left this semester, it seems unlikely that we will get an opportunity to meet a third time before I return to Chicago. However, we none the less have some great plans for the next few years.
Sometime in the near future, Loeffelholz would like to host a cookout of which I will be the guest of honor. Considering he is German, I can only assume that bratwurst will be on the menu. I hope that his wife and sons will be in attendance because I am dying to meet them. In fact, I have already started compiling a list of questions for Mrs. Loeffelholz. In addition to the cookout, Loeffelholz has also suggested that we watch a Bond film. Originally I thought that it would be impossible to reach a consensus on which film to watch, but then I remembered that one of his son's favorites is TMWTGG. I think it is safe to say that if LoeffelholzJr should cast the deciding vote, there is a good chance that the outcome will be in my favor.
Also, providing that the filming of Bond22 remains on schedule and is released in the beginning of November 2008, we will be able to go and see it together on opening day. This would make for quite an interesting experience as we both have differing opinions of Daniel Craig and his first film CR. Oh well, there is nothing better than some good old- fashioned debate, especially when it involves James Bond. :007)
Loeffelholz, thank you for another enjoyable afternoon. We have some great ideas for the future ; let's be sure to make 'em happen! {[]
-Roger Moore
This time, we would meet in a place of more pronounced social relevance---a place where classical bourgeois Americana resonates with an undeniable, visceral clarity...
:v
I had the Buffalo Shrimp; Tee Hee had a Buffalo Chicken sandwich...he had a soft drink; I...didn't -{
Our conversation was wide-ranging, covering current events (and their accompanying effect on international relations ), the state of Bond in the transitional Early Seventies, Craig's future in the role, and the occasional use of the Obvious Dummy in Bond films (AVTAK and GE were discussed---TH, I forgot to mention the moment in TND where we see the Obvious Dummy in the helicopter, just before it hits the building in 'Saigon' and explodes! ;% ).
Perhaps it was the beer...but I was unusually magnanimous about Sir Roger in this meeting...I must be more diligent in the future...
I was lucky enough to see Mr. Hee's very impressive collection of Bond autographs, which made me positively green with envy. Sir Roger, George Lazenby, Jane Seymour, Eunice Gayson, Claudine Auger, Maud Adams...the list goes on and on...it occurred to me: perhaps I had underestimated this fellow...
We've made plans for more meetings down the road, including a cookout and a screening of #22 when it's finally out...
The spirit of Bond Fellowship is alive and well.
Talk to you soon, my friend {[]
