On the original poster's topic, I feel that the big epic Bonds were only Lewis Gilbert's three... TB was BIG, but it had so many smaller moments that I don't feel I could include it in that description... and I'm tempted to include TND as epic, but to me it's also on the TB level, close but no cigar. DAD is epic-wannabe, but it's merely a CGI-laden DAF clone with better acting.

Better acting in DAD? I know Halle Berry is a very talented actress, but she was atrocious in DAD. So was almost everyone other than Judi Dench and sometimes Pierce. The script and director were the main problem, but Halle Berry's character's problems are at least half her fault.
Yes. Pike, Brosnan & Stephens were at the top of their game, and it's what makes the movie so watchable for me. Okay, Halle was pretty bad, agreed.
In DAF, Connery was doing Flint, enjoyable on that level, but he was basically through with Bond as a real character.
But on topic, the movie just couldn't get to that epic place that Gilbert's films reached.
