"A blunt instrument wielded by a Government department. Hard, ruthless, sardonic, fatalistic. He likes gambling, golf, fast motor cars. All his movements are relaxed and economical". Ian Fleming
Thanks. I actually adore both of these last 2 films very much. I'd be happy with either one of them winning but lately I've really been enjoying OHMSS. FRWL is a masterpiece but OHMSS does have an underdog appeal in this fight.
I would say they're both masterpieces.
But FRWL tends to be considered a masterpiece by both serious and casual fans of the serious alike(due partially but not entirely to Sean Connery being in it) whereas OHMSS is mainly considered a masterpiece by diehard fans of the series only. So I'd call the Lazenby vehicle the underdog in this competition
OHMSS benefits from the fact that it had a much higher budget, a better score and (in my opinion) slightly better original source material.
It's true that the OHMSS novel benefits from Bond being in it from the beginning while in FRWL the novel Bond is largely absent in the first 3rd while it goes into great detail about SMERSH's plan against Bond.
and it really stood out to me how FYEO is in many ways a knockoff of OHMSS just as AVTAK is of GF and TSWLM is of YOLT(and TND off both YOLT and TSWLM).
Alot of people say that. But to me, a knockoff is a film which copies another but doesn't establish its own identity. Hence, IMO, AVTAK was a knockoff (of GF) however I wouldn't describe TSWLM and FYEO as knockoffs, even though they had alot in common with earlier films.
I don't think a film being a knockoff necessarily means it's bad. (Hey, I'll always love MR even though its clearly TSWLM meets Star Wars. I saw MR prior to seeing TSWLM so I freely admit that may influence my preference for it)
I'd say FYEO isn't exclusively a knock off of OHMSS only. The 1981 film also knocks off FRWL(the ATAC is the Lektor revisited, Kriegler is clearly a Red Grant clone, Columbo and Kristatos clearly recalls the Kerim Bey/Krilencu rivalry) and TB(nuclear device trapped in vessel underwater that Bond has to go retrieve, leading lady wants revenge against villain for murdering a family mbr(s), she saved Bond with her weapon(Melina crossbow, Domino spear gun) and is played by a brunette French actress in both films). But the OHMSS knockoff aspects of FYEO really stood out to me watching it with the director's and others behind the scenes commentary so soon after viewing the OHMSS DVD with its commentary.

No, a film being described as a 'knockoff' is not necessarily a bad thing. However I wonder wether people would really use it to describe a film which they consider to be great. That's why I avoid using the term unless as a criticism (of AVTAK, for example. I never use it to descibe TSWLM, which I consider to be an absolute masterpiece.)

Keep the dream alive people!
You know, it won't exactly end my world if OHMSS doesn't win this-- however it will make me sad if it loses only because all its supporters bowed out too early.
