Have not been on a while as the thread went off topic and seemed dominated by our resident diecast/automobile expert/poster :s.

Just a note on the Consul. My father had one and white wall tyres were a dealer option for the consul, zodiac, zephyr, classic consul/classic capri & corsair . You often see them sporting the white walls at classic car shows but I am guessing they have been an addition in recent years not originals. Some of us in the UK will remember the Kia Pride circa early 90's had whitewalls as standard LOL

Did not think I would say this but glad the collection end is in sight, just 6 to go ..... three deliveries yeh !!!!!

I totally agree with you on looking forward to the end of this collection. This the first time I have ever decided to collect a whole model series from start to finish? The only models I have missed out on being the 3 free subscription models.I very much doubt whether I will manage to find those.Like a fool,I could have bought the Renault for £5 from a model dealer at a country show, but didn't particularly like the model at the time.
Which brings me on to another problem, what to do with them ,once the collection has ended?Any suggestions?

Ever try eBay? No doubt you will find.

Yes, those three subscriber freebies are almost always available on eBay.co.uk - I got my half-Renault off eBay, still sealed in its original plastic & card cover, for about £13 as I remember. I could have got it for less if I'd been more patient...

I haven't bought Little Nellie or the tank as those weren't in a perspex case and were to a different scale, so less appealing to me.
  • JagJag Posts: 1,167MI6 Agent
FACT, the tank is indeed supposed to be 1/50, but what scale is Little Nellie? It looks quite 1/43 to me.
  • Dalkowski110Dalkowski110 Posts: 1,314MI6 Agent
"but what scale is Little Nellie? It looks quite 1/43 to me."

I'd heard it was 1/43 in the "Dinky 48" sense...in other words, close, but not exact.

"I totally agree with you on looking forward to the end of this collection."

Believe it or not, even I agree. I just want the Ford Consul, Ford Econoline, Chevy Impala Custom Coupe, and then wrap it up. With many new East Bloc/Soviet/Yugoslavian-related releases (and Code 3's) on the horizon, my finances will also soon be directed elsewhere.

EDIT: My Ford Country Squire hasn't arrived yet. When it does, I will give a full report as to accuracy vs. the real car.
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

I'm glad everyone suddenly appears to be in agreement with me... :)) I said ages ago I couldn't wait for the collection to end!

Little Nellie may not be exactly 1/43, but I also don't think it's further away from the true scale that some car models released in this collection. And because hardly anyone has seen it in real life, it can be safely displayed next to any 1/43 model and no-one will notice.

I am only glad as they are making a real hash of the final deliveries, if they had kept momentum and reliable deliveries as in the early part of the collection and upto october last year I would welcome more additions but in fairness it has had a good innings and the time is right for it to finish

I completely agree. One solution could've been turning to Norev AND Ixo instead of just Ixo, since they make their partworks both faster and just as detailed, but I think they have their hands full as of now.

More shots of the Impala - bit obscure but interesting IMHO -

Just to echo some of the 'end game' comments, it does seem about time the series ended but it's also kind of bittersweet as far as I'm concerned. I doubt we 'Bond/car excentrics' will see another set of such impressive model dioramas like these anytime soon, and I'd like to thank Fabbri for creating them. I never intended buying the whole set, but the 80 or so I have cherry picked over the years will be handed on to my kids :)

I think this is a good point to look back. Me, I've just got the Peugeot 504 and Q-boat today, so I'm in for a series of treats, but still, I keep thinking, whenever I open my display cabinet, seeïng an Aston martin next to a Daimler, next to a Mustang, next to a Mini Cooper etc., what a remarkable collection this is, with all the "odd ones" actually adding to the fun from a collector's point of view. I mean, I can think of 5/6 manufacturers who make a V12 Vanquish in grey, but how many make specific year/trim level of a Gaz, or even the 2CV with the square headlights? I think the diversity, from exotic world-renowed supercars to daily drivers of the past, is what makes this collection great...

Well said ! I actually preferred the obscure models as much as I am a fan of Aston Martin it was great to see the oddities coming through especially amongst the last twenty or so editions. The impala looks brilliant!

"I actually preferred the obscure models"

Basically why I've been collecting the JBCC.

"but how many make specific year/trim level of a Gaz"

BIZ Models of Kiev comes to mind (in the same color, too) as far as the GAZ-31029 Volga goes. Thing is, BIZ will cost you about $225 for their admittedly-more-detailed model.

"or even the 2CV with the square headlights?"

Solido (as in, modern Solido) makes one. Ixo announced one and Vitesse makes one, as well. The real oddballs are stuff like the Hispano-Suiza, the MP Lafer, the Leyland Sherpa van...in fact, I should go over who made/makes what from this collection and get back to you. I know the Leyland Sherpa is unique, as are the Hispano-Suiza, Bentley, and MP Lafer, but you can usually find someone somewhere who made a particular type of car (not the specific Bond car, but the type of car).
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

Very true, and Fabbri's little guessing game has been intriguing too, keeping us in the dark over what will be released and when :s
Of the 'odd ones' I found the Q-Boat to be a real winner, and the Octopussy Alfa, mostly because of the oddly twee diorama that went with it. Still can't get my head round the Bondola though!
It was also good to see some of the forgotten major players appear too, such as Tracy's Cougar, a favourite of mine I think Corgi should have made back in the 60's/ 70's, or even in their more recent 1/36 ranges. I think Fabbri's model is brilliant, especially with the damaged panels - Corgi might have put skis on it but it almost certainly wouldn't have had dents.
In fact, I wonder if OHMSS isn't the single Bond movie that's been best served by this collection? As one of the 'classic' Bonds, up until now there's only been a nod towards it by die-cast manufacturers (Small scale Corgi Junior toboggans come to mind) but now there's a really nice set of six cars based around it. No doubt I'll be shot down in flames on that one!! :)

I make the most models per film count as follows:
    Quantum of Solace - 9
    Goldfinger - 8
    Casino Royale - 7
    Die Another Day - 7
    Octopussy - 7

and the following are all on 6 models:
    A View To A Kill; Dr. No; Live And Let Die; On Her Majesty’s Secret Service; The Living Daylights; Diamonds Are Forever;
LTK and FRWL are the most poorly-served films with only 2 models each.
(This analysis includes the 3 free gifts and any models still be be issued.)

    Totally agree with James John Smythe's sentiments above http://www.ajb007.co.uk/post/488695/#p488695 ! I am hopeful that after I receive 104 + 105 (any day now, GEF?) that I'll have three more subscription deliveries: 106 + 107, 108 + 109, and finally 110 + Anglia re-issue ;)

    Cheers,

I have grouped my collection in a film by film order. Looking back even the low points of the collection are welcome additions. The bondola reminds me of the awful souvenir you used to see of people who visited venice in the 70's. But again i like it.

Looking forward to the last Aston but what an anti climax to 110 models. I still think GEF could finish the collection with a show stopper maybe a three vehicle set or larger vehicle. I would happily pay more for this. The live and let die bus would be perfect!:)

Yes, I agree with Diecast007 - the collection should go out with a bang rather than just a beat up Aston Martin haha, maybe a really superb diorama in a big box ... I agree about the bus but I think it will be too politically incorrect to issue. I still think the Kenworth tanker would be brilliant.

    Cheers

I have Just had a word with Kate at Database Factory and the Info is as following - "The Orders for Issues 104 and 105 went over to the warehouse on the 6th. AND The Anglia is coming in this batch".

If this is incorrect then I appologise but this is how it was given.

    Wooo-hooooo! that sounds optimistic, thanks CAMERA_MAN !
Does that mean they're planning to send out all 3 models in one delivery - 104 + 105 + Anglia?? Or does 'batch' refer to them receiving a bulk shipment of models from the manufacturer(s)? Either way, sounds good ... Fingers crossed!

    Cheers,
    Rhinoman B-)

PS Have just realised that it's the 50 years anniversary of Dr. No next year ... amazing ... I'm feeling older everyday haha

Politically incorrect I understand why you say that but it shouldn't be, its a green bus that has its roof taken off because of a low bridge?? I'm sure every Bond film has offended someone somewhere so therefore politically incorrect also ?:)

Come on GEF we want this collection to close with a show stopper . When we signed up to the collection we were promised specials , none so far. Conclude the collection with a very limited edition offered to subscribers only. Then surplus offered to general market. What about a nod to Ian Fleming and the car James Bond drives in the books the Bentley or speed boat and police car from LALD. Loads of possibilities. This could be marketed as a special offer and conclude with final magazine with index and glossary for the whole collection. What about some collection binders . Don't miss this oportunity . This has been a great collection underline it with a great ending !

Thanks for that RM (I was surprised QOS has had the most models) but what I was actually wondering was which individual set of Bond movie vehicles has ultimately been the most impressive or welcome? Because quite a few GF, TB, DAD vehicles were already modelled by Corgi & Minichamps I would opt for the OHMSS set as the most welcome, but what does everyone else think?

I think the end models could have been a bit more special too, maybe a twin-set quarry scene involving the damaged Aston along with a damaged Alfa. Both these cars have been available at Keswick in their pursuit state so modelling would have been easy: -

    z_DSCF1564.jpg

Or as Diecast007 suggested, the LALD Sheriff's car complete with speedboat stuck in it, that would've been fantastic! :)

The LALD bus would have been a great model. And I like the idea of a Kenworth or LALD Sheriff w/ speedboat! Or The Horse Box from OP which was 'planned'. Alas it seems not to be. What about Helicopter w/ Blofeld hanging off it from FYEO? :))

Just picked up the Ford Country Squire from Forbidden Planet, and have to say that it is a real stunner. I think it's a shame that the series is now coming to end, as I'm sure it could run to another ten or twenty issues with no problem at all (though preferably back to the two a month schedule !)
  • mazmaz Posts: 227MI6 Agent
Just got Zil as a back Order. Excellent model though I can see why Bond collectors may lament its inclusion in preference to some rather more important vehicles.

Reckon the series really ended before 100 since then they are really offering general models related to Bond Films rather than items specially made with figures and neat dioramas. I suspect they have been happy to keep making a profit so have kept the models coming getting models others can sell as non-James Bond later.

"since then they are really offering general models related to Bond Films rather than items specially made with figures and neat dioramas."

I would disagree...but only partially. You are onto something. The U.H. Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II's look horrendous and there is no way I see them being re-released. The Silver Cloud II might work, but the best of the Rolls-Royces...the Phantom III Sedanca de Ville...is so Bondian that I'm not sure U.H. could get away with selling it as anything but Auric Goldfinger's car.

My take is that Ixo plans to use most of its moulds for multiple purposes, though. The 1967 Cadillac Hearse could be offered as a lower-priced alternative to the good-selling Neo 1966 Cadillac Hearse with some extra detail. The La Salle/Miller Hearse (or, more importantly, its chassis) could be used as the basis for a variety of 1930's Cadillac, La Salle, and Buick products, plus I can imagine an ambulance based on it...which would be entirely accurate, considering the La Salle/Miller's status as a "combination coach." The Mercedes-Benz 190 Binz Europ 1100 has a huge range of possibilities for West German hospitals, Feuerwehr, and even as a hearse. The Chevrolet C-10 I can see offered as an early 1970's pickup with metal grille; the moulds would be good for it and Ixo could use a good late '60's-early 70's Chevy pickup. The Range Rover Convertible, due to its rarity in real life, I don't see much use for unless Ixo re-releases it identically or uses it as the basis for another Range Rover. The Crown Victoria is based on a previously-released Ixo car, so that's been done. They'd need to add side mirrors, but the '89 Ford Bronco II would sell well in the US market. We're already seeing the ZIL-117 used as Issue 61 of USSR AvtoLegende. Heck, check out eBay China and eBay Hong Kong and you'll find that, save for the black (unpainted) interior and license plates, the car is 100% identical. I suspect the 1964 Ford Country Squire would undergo some modifications before release (still have not received it...): addition of one or more side mirrors and the addition of hubcaps from Ixo's planned 1963 Ford Country Squire (which is a 6-passenger model, not a 9-passenger model like the '64). The Ford Consul would fit in well with the Ixo Classic Series and complement the Ixo Ford Anglia nicely. The Ford Econoline may not sell well as a minibus or just be limited as a minibus, but it would certainly do well as a van. I also see the Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe doing well if they play their cards right: offer it both as an Impala Custom Coupe AND a Caprice Classic Convertible (in fact, if they chose one over the other, I'd go with the Caprice Classic Convertible) with the 400 Turbo Fire V8 under the hood.
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

Yes being a non-subscriber I seem to get the models from Forbidden Planet shop on the 28th of the month.
I've got 104 and 105 (day before the Royal Wedding).

I recently went to a Toy car fair and a dealer who goes to France and Germany to the World Toyfair seems to think
that the collection will go to 125 ! I've told him the magazine says 110 and that's it.
